Muammar Gaddafi received a frosty response when addressing 700 Italian businesswomen in Rome.

The Libyan leader said he believed European women were emancipated not by free choice but because they had been "forced by necessity", provoking angry boos from the audience.

He held a similar meeting on a visit to Paris in 2007 with 1,000 selected women guests, who were told he wanted to "save European women".

Tpiah,

Libya has the best and most progressive social programms for women. Ghaddafi could truly model that to the rest of the world. What we call women's rights in the west is not a rights at all compared to the role and relations of women under Ghaddafi. Trust me! In the west, women struggled and battled for the grounds and the men only yielded reactively. . .in Libya, the women were proactively empowered to fill their natural role. Whether or not he will succeed in articulating the changes is another problem. Knowing Ghaddafi, he will probably attach some deal to the cultural exchange.
