Arogunmasa:

In banks in SA. Trust me. Nig is not only their investment haven. I think u r encouraging multi national coys to disrespect the laws of Federal Republic of Nig. Did MTN Nig floaut the laws or not? If yes, what is the prescribe penalty? A stranger does not know the way to the market square, it is the villagers that shows him the way.

So if u are a business man, u will use made money made elsewhere to pay fine elsewhere? Nigerian logic.

I'm not saying mtn should not pay fine...let the fine be reasonable. Who fines a company more than 80% o the total value of the business?

All these emotional argument doesn't make sense. I'm all for Laws of the land but everyone I reasoning like cave men. Apply logic, and see how unreasonable the fine is. How can u set up a fine system where less than 10% of a telecoms company subscribers can erode the total value of the company?

Everyone is talking laws of the land as if we just discovered the lines were not registered. Everyone should look back and see this for what it is. A new government trying to impress gullible masses.

FYI, have u registered your sim? Did u notice even the one been done has a fundamental flaw in it. The information being collected is not being verified by referencing it to know if it is true or not. Tell me any advanced country where telecoms operators register sims.

We need a central data base instead of all these multiple registrations by private companies.

MTN SHOULD PAY A FINE, HOWEVER THE FINE MUST BE REASONABLE. 700billion, haba!

Poverty is in the mind and reading these comments I am beginning to understand why Nigerians are so poor and underdeveloped. If entrepreneurs and big businesses didn't develop the abroad some of us run to or live in,would America be what it is today. Nigerians are very socialist in their mindset expecting the government to do everything for them including stealing from rich successful people and businesses and sharing the loot with them.
Socialism has failed the world over and will never succeed in Nigeria, not in a billion years. China was a communist country with government trying to do everything till their leaders had a rethink and opened up the country. China is only communist in word as their deeds are capitalist . Now I would rather a rich prosperous nigeria like China than a socialist poor nigeria like the China of 40 years ago.
People that hate rich people will die poor,it is not a curse,it is just the way the world works. Naa pepsin start MTN,go and start your own business and stop basking in your bankruptcy of ideas.

My sentiments exactly.

Make we leave this people but I am glad I found a reasonable person on this forum regarding this issue. I visit nairaland every day but I just browse through the main topics on front page to keep myself abreast with developments in naija but this MTN issue pains me to the very core of my being.i am saddened that a majority of people including some of my friends I have spoken to about the issue feel MTN should pay.
I don tire for my naija people ooo, reminds me of what they did to John D Rockefeller when the govt broke his company to bits and pieces cos even America was afraid of big business and the same sentiments as we have in naija now pervaded America then.Standard oil is too big, break them up and allow their competitors breathe, why should one man be so wealthy?
Well the government listened then but hasn't tried any such move ever since cos they know it is bad for a free market economy.John D Rockefeller even went on to become wealthier when the various units of his business were floated separately.I wish MTN had a similar exit strategy cos who would have thought Mobil, chevron,Exxon all belonged to one man in the beginning.

They do

maybe some one can just do us a favour and research the battles MTN has fought over the world. Remember what happened in Iran. The Iranian telecommunication took MTN to the USA court and demanded $5bn, the court case took 2 to 3yrs. and that company lost the case at the end. MTN is experienced in this kinder of issues. They are not dealing with such for the 1st time.
