ehissi: Ojukwu was an NPN senator in 1983 under the old Anambra State but buhari had him released earlier than most at the time. Some of us still remember these events. |

Okudiover: False!! Ojukwu contested on the NPN - a largely northern party led by shagari and lost. He never served as Senator of the Federal Republic that is why he is not addressed as "Senator" the way Bola Ahmed Tinubu is addressed as Senator!! Do your homework before you post comments; that way, you can give an informed perspective!! if you still dont believe; take source http://www.britannica.com/biography/Odumegwu-Ojukwu |

ehissi: Shattap Please! Ojukwu was a Civilian Governor/Senator of the federal Republic under that Shagari regime. Most Politicians in that setting, having been compromised and very corrupt, got "reset" by Buhari, when he took over....including Ojukwu! But the corrupt politicians "fought back" gallantly, using IBB to truncate Buhari's regime which was setting Nigeria back on the right path. Come to 2015, Buhari is doing the same thing and l worry that the looters and corrupt politicians are fighting back and would do everything to make sure they frustrate Buhari's Govt. But POWER lies with the masses. Will we Nigerian masses, let-down this Govt or will we rise above ethnic and tribal/religious divide, t lay a good foundation for our future? The decision lies with each one of us. Lastpage! |

lastpage: Sorry to disappoint you, but Ojukwu was never a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria - except you want to say that he was one in biafra, in which case.........na you know!! Ojukwu was actually in charge of the Eastern region under General Aguiyi Ironsi; an office he retained after the coup which ushered in Gowon as head of State. It was in his capacity of Head of eastern region, that he declared biafra!! After the war, Ojukwu returned from exile in cote'd voire in 1982 to join the NPN - a move which disappointed Ndigbo, since NPP, a largely Ndigbo which was lead by Nnamdi Azikiwe was ready to receive him - and contested in the senatorial elections and lost to Dr. Edwin Onwudiwe (an election largely believed to be rigged in favour of Onwudiwe who was more or less Jim Nwobodo's man). Buhari arresting Ojukwu had nothing to with Corruption; it was simply a power game!! A move to check-make whatever power/influence Ojukwu may have because nobody wanted another war; not in the state Nigeria was in when Buhari took over power; it would have been a disaster!! Ojukwu, in-spite of the fact that he was now a "Nigerian" was highly unpredictable, Buhari didn't want to take chances; he was suspicious of the fellow and did nothing to hide it, so he gave the General a one way ticket to Kiri-kiri prison!! Anyone ignorantly calling Ojukwu an "NPN Senator" is no different from someone calling Jimmy Agbaje or Nuhu Ribadu a "PDP Governor" !! In case you still believe that I don't know what I am talking about; check the "lastpage" for source!! He may have problem with articulation, but he has no problem with ratiocination. A great man is not determined by how he speaks, but by how he thinks and how he acts. Speeches do not make great men, but great men attract great speeches. President Muhammadu Buhari may not be perfect, but he is honest. And honesty is the best policy Nigerians need most now for the nation building of a New Nigeria in the leadership of Africa for our common good. May Almighty God guard and guide him all the way. |

After 13 years in exile, the Federal Government of Nigeria under President Shehu Aliyu Usman Shagari granted an official pardon to Odumegwu-Ojukwu and opened the road for a triumphant return in 1982. The people of Nnewi gave him the now very famous chieftaincy title of Ikemba (Strength of the Nation, while the entire Igbo nation took to calling him Dikedioramma ("beloved hero of the masses" during his living arrangement in his family home in Nnewi, Anambra. His foray into politics was disappointing to many, who wanted him to stay above the fray. The ruling party, NPN, rigged him out of the senate seat, which was purportedly lost to a relatively little known state commissioner in then Governor Jim Nwobodo's cabinet called Dr. Edwin Onwudiwe. The second Republic was truncated on 31 December 1983 by Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, supported by General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida and Brigadier Sani Abacha. The junta proceeded to arrest and to keep Ojukwu in Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison, Lagos, alongside most prominent politicians of that era. Having never been charged with any crimes, he was unconditionally released from detention on 1 October 1984, alongside 249 other politicians of that era—former Ministers Adamu Ciroma and Maitama Sule were also on that batch of released politicians. In ordering his release, the Head of State, General Buhari said inter alia: "While we will not hesitate to send those found with cases to answer before the special military tribunal, no person will be kept in detention a-day longer than necessary if investigations have not so far incriminated him." (WEST AFRICA, 8 October 1984) |

beamed: So, even HISTORY CONFIRMS that President M. Buhari is a man whose words can be "banked upon"! Buhari may not be perfect (and l am yet to see any human or Nigerian for that matter, whose is anywhere near perfection!) but he has the moral advantage of not being a LOOTER or an abettor of Looters. Nigerians will stay solidly behind him, while he injects some sanity into the system. The next Government can probe his own Govt and jail him, if he is found to be corrupt. Until then, even #Wailers should "receive sense" Lastpage @ehissi : duly noted. Ojukwu was just part of the over two hundred "Politicians" rounded up after the overthrow.... and he was promptly released when found to be "clean". He was not singled-out as most people are trying to portray! Thank you. 1 Like |

Re: Buhari To Ojukwu’s Mother In A 1984 Cartoon by ehissi(m): 9:20am On Jan 11, 2016 |
lastpage: Again that is false!! Ojukwu was released unconditionally by the Ibrahim Babangida Administration - which upstaged Buhari in a coup - there was no intention by Buhari anywhere or anyday to release Ojukwu. This is one reason Babangida was a very hard man to dislike, as far as Nigerian politicians were concerned. Babangida gave unconditional release to all poltical detainees of the Buhari government, all without exception. He started on a fresh note as far as detention is concerned! One thing you must bear in mind is that Ojukwu arrest nor release had nothing to do with Corruption - that will be very foolish to say!! In present terms, let me give you an exact scenerio of what you are saying!! It is like Buhari in this present time arresting Jimi agbaje for the Corruption going on in lagos state, simply because PDP, in the last administration is believed to be corrupt!! Jimmy agbaje simply contested to be governor in Lagos and lost! He never held a position in Jonathan's cabinet or the party or any cabinet for that matter neither did he have involvement in Fashola's government. PDP was at the centre but in Lagos, which is supposed to be Jimi's stronghold is controlled solely by APC, so wetin concern Jimi!!?? So why arrest jimi, when fashola is there strutting like a G O D. Ok, he said shagari was corrupt, where did shagari end up?? The main person who was corrupt was chilling out in a Hotel somewhere while Ojukwu was moved to kirikiri!! Ojukwu's arrest was a power play, to keep him in Check!! Explain the rationale?? Every person who was/is in a position to explain what happened to PTDF money under Buhari's care; with respect to heavy contract awards is dead. The only real link, in this Dispensation of democracy, that can link Buhari's past to his present is Dasuki!! As far as I am concerned, in this land Nigeria, Dasuki is the only security person in Nigeria's history who has been charged to explain how monies meant for security matters was spent! For me, that is blackmail! There are colonels, Generals that had known links with Boko Haram in the military that have been caught, people who gave intel on field ops to Boko Haram, sponsored them with uniforms and weapons supply; how many has Buhari subjected to the kind of Open embarrassment in the media as Dasuki!! Or their own too is not corruption that Buhari should be seen to fight ba?? And we say Buhari is fighting corruption!! Let us wait and see the end of the trial; you will understand better then! That is assuming you are not an APC fanatic!! |
