Most Nigerians have suffered so much that they now enjoy suffering. They have given up hope and do not believe that it could be better. So they accept the status quo with the usual ‘the devil you know is better that the angel you don’t know’ cliché. They are so scared of change because the system has tortured them to a point where they can no longer take risks of trying something new. They would rather die in deprivation than take the chance of doing something different from the regular. Those that cannot take it anymore throng the airports and escape abroad. We are the most traveled people on earth. We are always quick to escape, even to countries that used to depend on Nigeria for help and direction. Who would have imagined Nigerians going to Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Uganda, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Namibia, Kenya and Angola for greener pastures?

Back in the day, our work ethic was one of the best but today our youth have been constrained to resort to internet fraud, armed robbery, kidnapping, ritual killings, prostitution and all sort of vices just to survive within and outside the country. While this goes on the political leadership engages in primitive accumulation of wealth and inordinate plundering of the country’s resources. The leadership does not care about the citizenry; neither do they believe in building enduring institutions that empower the masses. They are insulated from the suffering of the masses in their megalomaniac journey in the hallowed chambers of power and authority. Every passing year the government proclaims budgets and policies that are dead on arrival, while there is a continuous and precarious polarity between the needs of the common man and the means to actualize them.
