WhatsApp is planning for companies to be using their platform to contact their customers
which means the companies will be paying WhatsApp to use their platform to contact customers. Example ,dangote will subscribe to WhatsApp and they allow dangote to use their platform to contact their customers .

whatsapp do charge a little fee and even at a discount when it's for a longer period. some people changed the number for the initial registration so the 1year will start afresh in such scenarios.
Mine will expire by 2020. I renewed it first in 2011 cuz I started using it in 2010.
On the subject, I don't like it ooo, I prefer to continue the payment and enjoy my privacy. Imagine a situation where mtn is given access to your data to call and send you text on whatsapp after subscribing for 1gb that's not yet enough for your personal use at an exorbitant cost.

Looks like our service providers pay them for the App and introduce it to us. For us to use whatspp,we now av to buy whatsapp bundle or any internet bundle of choice to make us use the internet constantly. Mtn pays for the service for us,we subscribe to the service through mtn by buying bundles nd plans which means more people use the internet daily.

to those asking if, why and how they pay for Whatsapp;
It comes to a stage where you are more concerned about paying for services.......even if you aren't necessarily forced to. Like when you find value in something you appreciate the owner by dropping a little something because you know it costs the owners some amount to continue providing that particular service to you.
same thing with Wikipedia also
