The daily demurrage for terminal charges is around 12,650 naira and shipping charges after grace days is also around the same amount...just ask your agent guy to come around so u can sort it because the longer tha consignment stays the more difficult it becomes to get it out...Pls next time patronise people u reliably know...

@eksammy,
There are three lanes in customs ASYCUDA ++ clearing system namely, red, green and blue lanes.
If your consignment falls on the red lane it means the consignment is highly suspect and MUST be physically examined 100%. No short cuts.
Secondly the amount of money you provided for clearing that container of three vehicles is highly inadequate.
However since you can not locate/contact the clearing agent my sincere advise to you is to contact a maritime lawyer and go to the port/terminal of landing vehicle seat in order to get to the root and reason for the delay in clearing the vehicles. The reason I advise you to engage a maritme lawyer is because no one can predict the atrocity commited by your agent. If he has falsified documentation or forged bank recepts(the operating word is("IF") you could be arrested and detained if you go there without a lawyer.
Another scenario is the agent might have cleared the container out of the port and the container was intercepted by the Federal Operations Unit and taken to their warehouse in Ikeja.
All my advise remains a hypothesis until you visit the port yourself preferably with a lawyer.
Good luck.

@op.ve u been able to get across to the agent. Honestly We do ve good agent as well as unscrupulous element in the system. With good system in place now clearing of cars or containers should not take more than 3days min, maximum 5days to 7days. Its either d duty was not paid in d first place. Pls let him show u d duty receipt ,terminal charges shipping charges. Let me ve the container no/ bill lading to enable us do. tracking and a report will be made to block d agency. Once d agency is blocked they will fish him out Call me on 08080134382 for further advice

It doesn't pay. I don't even see how much he made to warrant all the nonsense.

The demurrage and Terminal fees were paid directly to the authorities.

I will be surprised if he made N200k from the deal. Was it worth it? I don't think so.

He lost his main client that introduced me to him. For someone that just started a new family, he will go through hard times.

He would have been the one clearing the second container now but he destroyed his reputation with greed/lies.

I learned that he has turned into a pastor in some mushroom church in Ajagbadi(?).

Absolutely! Typical nigerian they do not consider long term benefits, they always jeopardise their reputation just for few thousands, not realising he could have made more.

Hello N'landers,

Please I need you guys to advise me cos Im having a feeling that some things may not be right.

My container with 3 cars (2009 Nissan, 2007 Xterra & 2004 Sienna) landed in Lagos on the 15th of January and till today Feb. 3, the Agent has not cleared it after i gave him 600k, 500k and 350k respectively for the 3 cars even a week before they landed.

Week 1: He claims the container was inspected by customs on the 18th (3 days after it birthed) and they asked for extra 70k for some clothes in the container...and this dragged.

Week 2: He said there were changes in policies causing the delay and the goods has entered 'ALERT' whatever that means. He now said later in the week that he has spent 158k and still trying to get full amount for 'dummorage'.

Week 3: Today is wednesday and he has not picked his calls this week.

Please can someone explain to me how this clearing thing works?

How long is it supposed to take to clear a container?

Are there recent legal changes affecting clearing at Lagos Port of maerskline?

What does it mean for goods to 'enter alert'?

How long does it take for containers to start accumulating Dummorhage and what is the daily rate?

Someone please help and advise me on what you think i should do.

there is no major problem
your agent is trying to cheat the govt.
maybe the bill laden contains a different item from physical items inside the container.

solution if you know him and his house, pay him unexpected visit early morning tomorrow by 5 am
wishing a success
Well let me help you
call this no 08032268500, his name Akubueze Emeka known as Bumazek . He is a clearing agent too. He can help you if you are lucky to get him. Very popular agent in Lagos

M a clearing agent, so bro d dumurrage for terminal is as follows first three days is free, den d next five days is 9000 at 1800 per day second period is 44000 at 8800 per day d last period is 12000 per day till infinity. Plus 5percent vat. Dia is also some changes in some offices, work has not been d same for some time now, d one I cleared dis January took almost one month, I suggest u talk to him in a polite n calm manner, no body can seize ur container, but do u v tins like used tires, fridge n cylinder, if u can tell me d shipping line will help u with d detention fee. But honestly u d money u gave him is enough if d shipping n terminal charges are not included, call me on 08183246673 for more clearance if u need it

In the midst of all these advise, we also need to point out that sometimes the computer server at the wharf can go down for days, and it will take "ONE WEEK" literally to release a job (this is for you folks that keeps saying that it shouldn't take 3,4, or 7 days to clear a container). This is not unusual. It has taken me 5 weeks to clear a container, yet I was doing everything right. God forbid that there is a congestion in the wharf, this would even compound an already complicated situation. Then you have to deal with the terminal payments. It can take you a whole day to pay just terminal charge at TITC.

I personally don't believe that the duration this container is taking to exit the gates of the wharf is highly unusual. Ask any regulars at Apapa or Tincan wharfs and they can confirm what I am stating. Once that server goes down, everybody regardless of experience in the freight forwarding game, stands at attention until the server comes back up. But OP you still need to satisfy your curiosity and worries by going to Apapa yourself to verify the situation of this

Impexp:
If you have a copy of the bill of lading with you, come to the port on Monday with a copy and call me on 08186116315.

I should be able to check the status of the container for you and also confirm if truly there is alert on it or not because some agent might be bad.

Never give him any money until after this confirmation.

Just an assistant

Sorry bro, have always have the passion for Clearing and forwarding agent. I had gone for the training and we were given material, which have digested the material so well. Have been looking out to where I can serve. I'm ready to concur with the procedure, im a graduate in Accounting, but will love to build my carrier on the field. I hope to read your swift response. Thanks.

Even for them (terminal operators) to position your container for examination could take 3- 5days expecially Apmt.

Oh I know. At TICT it will cost you 20K to position your container for next day (not guaranteed)

What you should ask yourself is why he didn't tell you all the "fee" involved earlier! And he collected too much money from you!

The whole thing sounds like a scam to me. Report him to the police now! Before you do so, get a concrete evidence of the money you gave him and the service he promised to give for the money.

I've been sending cars home since 90's and it doesn't take days to claim goods. If my stuff arrive today, my Clearing Agent claims it the same day or next day in the morning if the goods arrived too late.

Some agents are not real professionals at all. There was a time I used a well known person to clear just a small van.
I gave him the Bill of Lading on time and I paid the amount he charged me fully
At the end end of the day the vehicle still entered demmurage which he made me to pay for.
Some people are parading themselves as agents but they are just not honest and have no clear knowledge of the job.
I started using another agent and things went on fine.
At the end of the day I got the info that the previous agent was not ready to pay what the customs asked him to pay.
Use a real expert not the person you know.
The best way forward and what I pray for is to be able to clear by myself whatever I send to Nigeria.HOW will I BE ABLE TO DO THIS?

@rafcrown. Get yourself a custom licence .very simple to get.2months and some days u get it. Ve done it before.
The most important about agency is due diligence. Some agents are not conversant with the rules. If u ask an agent what is sales of good acts , incoterms,UCP ,IMO. Ve been on clearing For the past 18years but u ve d good,d bad and ugly of it. Education, punctuality, trust, due diligence is key one to make progress. There are lot of quacks in d system. Contact me If necessary 08080134382.

OMG I never knew my post made FP and I cant thank you all enough for all the discourse and advise here.

UPDATE: Armed with the info and advise that you guys gave me here, i finally got to talking terms with my agent on wednesday. He became cooperative immediately i gave indications that i wouldnt mind 'paying more' to get myself out of this.

But my catch was that i can only talk about it when the container is out so if there are more expenses, let him "source funds and pay" and then later we settle.

Later on Thursday, he called me to send my people for the goods. For real we have taken delivery.

Now he didnt give my people any papers as he said the 'papers are not out yet'. He even helped to hire police escorts to move the cars. I suspected he is holding back the papers as a negotiating tool but he swore against that convincing me that he wont be that "wicked" to allow me spend money hiring escorts when he has the papers.

So could this be true guys? Does it take some time to get papers out and how long does it normally take?

From your advise here, i already know what happened - he underpaid and was caught! I dont know the amount he wants to quote yet but i honestly want to put it to him that he should bear some of the losses for his mistakes.

I hope i wont be making mistakes arguing about the extra charges?

Again thank you all.....i've learnt so much from here these few days.
