Drug Abuse in a simple term has to do with the misuse of drugs. Drug abuse has to do with the use of drugs in ways that are not prescribed by the doctor, Nurses or pharmacists. The definition however, would not apply to drugs only, it could also apply to stimulants like Indian Hemp, Heroin, Cocaine which play vital roles in surgical operations in the hospitals.

Most commonly abused drugs in a student community would include Alcohol, marijuana, Tobacco, Ecstasy, Inhalants, Cough Medicine, Methamphetamine, Amphetamine, Rohypnol. These are often misused by students for different reasons.

Common Drugs Abused By Students

Cocaine:- cocaine is a drug obtained from the leaves of cocoa plant, it is often referred to as 'coke', Cocaine is an addictive narcotic Drug that is sometimes medically used and more commonly used as an illegal stimulant.

Heroine:- Used by millions of addicts around the world is Heroine. it is an highly addictive drug and as some would say, it could be taken in order to overcome anxieties of life.

Sedatives:- sedatives are believes to calm hypertension, eases agitation and permits sleep for a troubled mind.

Students have different reasons for indulging in the use of these addictive drugs and these are explained in the paragraphs below:
REASONS WHY STUDENTS INDULGE IN DRUG ABUSE

The only truth here is that when the reason for the use of a particular thing is unknown, then its abuse becomes highly inevitable. This is the case with drug abuse.

Before i talk about the reasons why students indulge in the abuse of drugs and other stimulants, lets understand the meaning of a drug.

A drug is a substance containing specialized and functional chemical properties that when inhaled, injected or swallowed could alter the chemistry of the body, mood, state of mind or condition of the body.

Having known the meaning of a drug, what then is the meaning of Abuse? Abuse simply means making the wrong use of something.

Combining the meaning of Drug and Abuse, i can therefore say that drug abuse is the improper or wrong use, application and intake of specialized chemical substances that affects the chemistry of the body or the state of mind of an individual.

When it comes to the reasons why youths or students indulge in drug abuse, every body would point to the destruction of their lives but the actual truth is that Reasons for drug abuse by students is for the following reasons:

1. Low self Esteem- Most of the youths take these hard drugs to boost their self esteem and make them feel more confident around their peers. The intake of hard drugs Like cocaine gives the individual some moment of boldness and when these moments fades away, they are left with the hunger for more confidence-boosters- more drugs

2. Ignorance- Ignorance is the existence of an individual without an accurate knowledge of his immediate environment. Likened to drug abuse, a lot of students actually indulge in drug abuse because of the fact that they are unaware of the effects of these drugs on their body. For example, the intake of cigarette is medically believed to leave traces of carbon on the blood system which could actually lead to health diseases like cancer of the lungs and these smokers would actually be ignorant about this if no one brings the knowledge to them.

3. Curiosity- Many young people, especially students are so inquisitive when it comes to knowing how it feels to engage in some vices. Smoking, believed to boost self-esteem, is an area where almost all students would want to experience. As a result of this curiosity, many end up lost in the act and become potential addicts.

4. Urge to carryout an activity- Others resolve to taking drugs in order to keep them fit for whatever Job they engage themselves in, especially those of them that act as Thugs. Those that belong to cult groups also take these drugs in order to harden their hearts and make them more brutal as they carry out their violent acts.

Conclusion- These drugs, despite being dangerous to health, has positive uses but find themselves being abuse by many. All these can be corrected if the youths, teenagers and other class of humans in the society are encouraged to work hard and believe in themselves not just in words but in deeds. Youths and students need to be enlightened on the negative effects of these drugs in their body system as this would help the high rate of ignorance among the youths as regards Drug Abuse.
