German chancellor got executive powers and not the president. Therefore German chancellor is the head of state of Germany. Their president is like a ceremonial figure like when Nnamdi Azikiwe was a President while Tafawa Balewa was the Prime minister(head of state).

So what is the use of a president?

The President is the Head of State (most of his functions are ceremonial). The Chancellor (just like a Prime Minister) is the Head of Government.

Am confused too o! This is the first time am seeing that Germany has a President.

In the German system of government, The President has ceremonial powers while the chancellor has the executive powers. Just like the UK where the Queen is the ceremonial head while the prime minister is the executive head

Merkel is the Prime Minister(chancellor), while the other guy is the President....thats the form of government Germany has been practicing even before 20th century.

This same form of government is also practiced in France. We also practiced same thing in 1960 when Azikwe and Balewa were President and Prime Minister respectively
it is called parliamentary system of Government.

The President of Germany (Hoerst Kohler) also visited Lagos in 2008. His motorcade caused chaos on Victoria Island (I was trapped in the traffic jam).

The president is like a ceremonial prime minister without executive powers while the chancellor is the de facto leader with executive powers who calls the shots.
Though one can equate them to our own vp and the president but while our vp can become the president in the event of the president being incapacitated, such transfer of powers and position is not possible in the case of Germany.
And i think Germany is the only country i know of in the world that uses chancellor for their leader.

.
They will visit Delta State when your people stop blowing up oilwells, stop embracing impunity and corrupt people like James Ibori and when your people have common sense and the right moral values.

I dnt think so.The president is more powerful and more recognised internationally than d prime minister.Prime minister is d head of parliament, just like d senate president but d president is d head of d nation.Example was d case of Nnamdi Azikwe who was d first president of Nigeria while in d same government,Tafawa Balewa was d prime minister when Nigeria was still practising parliamentary style of government.Who do we recognise most today as d head of dat gov?Nnamdi Azikwe
