– Intelligence reports i ndicate Boko Haram members are planning to escape to the southern part of the country – Army mounts surveillance on roads leading to Sambisa forest The Nigerian army and the Borno state police command have commenced a stop and search exercise on some roads leading into Maiduguri metropolis to as arrest fleeing insurgents who intend to escape to the southern parts of the country. The counter insurgency operations launched by the military in the northeast has led to the capture of several top Boko Haram members. Police spokesman, Isuku Victor, told the Guardian that the search and stop exercise became necessary following intelligence reports that Boko Haram insurgents plan to escape to the southern part of the country due to military offensive against insurgents in the northeast. According to Isuku Victor, the search exercise in the metropolis was to check the fleeing insurgents from Sambisa Forest who were being pushed out by the counter insurgency operations. Some of the roads expected to be covered by the surveillance include, Damboa, Polo, Giwa Barracks, and Circular roads that lead to Sambisa Forest and the Maiduguri- Damboa-Biu road. Meanwhile, four suspected Boko Haram members whose identities match those on the list of 100 most wa nted terrorists released by the military over the weekend have been apprehended by the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) at the Maiduguri motor park. The suspected sect members were were apprehended by the vigilant youths at about 7.35am while attempting to flee Maiduguri by bus. In another development, the House of Representatives committee on Army has said the Nigerian Army is weak and lacks adequate weapons to effectively prosecute the counter-insurgency operations in the north-east.
