FG Targets 4,000MW From Nuclear Energy by Topam: 6:37am On Mar 17, 2016
The Federal Government is working towards generating 4,000 megawatts of electricity from nuclear energy.

The plan is to start a programme in the coming years that will give the country 1,000MW in the first instance, which will be increased to 4,000MW thereafter.

According to a statement on Wednesday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, this was disclosed during a meeting that President Muhammadu Buhari had with the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mr. Yukiya Amano, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Shehu said the ministers who spoke at the meeting gave updates on the country’s presentation for the utilisation of nuclear energy.

The SSA said in the statement, “The ministers of Power, Solid Minerals, Health, Science and Technology, who briefed the meeting, said preparatory steps taken so far included the training of doctors and other medical specialists to prepare for unforeseen circumstances, the establishment of specialist medical centres and the procurement of necessary equipment aimed at protecting the health of the citizens.

“Nigeria, said the ministers, is aspiring to start a programme in the coming years that will give this country 1,000MW of electricity in the first instance, to be increased to 4,000MW thereafter.”

He quoted the President as welcoming the support of the IAEA for Nigeria’s aspiration to generate electricity from nuclear energy.

Buhari said he was happy that the organisation was developing a programme from which Nigeria would benefit.

He urged the IAEA to do more to support Nigeria in view of the long years of its association and support for the nuclear regulatory agency.

Amano said he was pleased to see that Nigeria was taking the correct steps towards a safe usage of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes

Hmmmmm
It's pretty obvious we don't have future thinkers in dz country
Almost every forward thinking country has focused less on hydro and moved to nuclear power generation.
God bless Nigeria

This government will be considered a success should they be able to move power generation up to 10,000 MW at the very least.

The problem with our government is, they take up too many projects simultaneously and end up accomplishing none. You can't record much success fighting on many fronts. Focus mainly on key areas.

Imagine if obj's regime had tackled just power issues, and gej's, infrastructure. We would have long gone far.

The manifesto is a lie!

Dunno if these men are kidnappers, hitmen or assassinatiors.

All they do since they got there is target, target and target. So far they've not even acquired the location of their first target or hit anything useful and I can't bet my left nyash that Buhari is not aware of this new target.

Is this man not the same person who said that Buhari refused to sign the Saudi-led Islamic coalition documents? What happened later?

There only way out of this mess of light problem is
1) have a good gas master plan that would take gas to industrial Clusters... so that big companies can produce there own power supply
2) try to use all our resources in the hydro generation ( Brazil generated over 120000 mw from hydro why can't we get 20000 from ours)
3) the main power supply to the national grid should be based on coal fired plants this has the potential of giving us over 100000mw if well planned
4) a country as populated as ours on this small area of land must go nuclear.. .. We must build nuclear power plants to be able to generate 40% of our power out put, we have uranium and to get 10% to 15% enrichment required for the plant won't be hard.... we also have the brains, we have the Rivers
5) geothermal is also something I would advise but I honestly don't know our potential in this part.. .. for me I see it as the future

Nigeria still has a long way to go. 4000MW isn't enough to power a fully industrialised lagos and ogun let alone Nigeria.
Nigeria needs to adopt loop network and mesh in places like lagos and abuja. Proper transmission and distributions are needed.
Anyways, Nuclear and coal appears the best options for now.

keep calm,it is just by gradual process. This is by Nuclear energy not by the one we av used to before, which is hydro electric power (using potential energy of river to generate power).

Finally!!!

Mount 1 Nuclear plant in any of the Desserts we in the North and watch this nation change fast.

But please and Please, the Government should have no business in the building nor running of the facility.. It should simply be a Private business being regulated by the Government.

In any case of meltdown of the plant, radioactivity will destroy and kill many innocent Nigerians...

So much for hypocrisy.
