The National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) Foundation has said it had become imperative for it to recover over N14.8 million debts, arising from soft loans granted ex-corps members over the years, for it to fulfill its purpose. The foundation established in 2008 was a voluntary organisation that could be joined by any ex-corps members with N500 registration fees to have access to soft loan, if they have marketable business plan. The Executive Secretary of the foundation, Mr. Adebanjo Akinnigbagbe, said that the only way to keep the loan facility alive was to recover the debts owed by beneficiaries which according to him, was taken from a revolving loan. Akinnigbagbe, who disclosed this at the 2016 Desk Officers Workshop held in Abuja, charged desk officers to assist them in monitoring the beneficiaries to respect the agreement they had with the foundation. His words; “In view of a great sore the foundation has, I want to remind the old desk officers and inform the new ones about a decision taken at our last meeting in 2013. This is the effect that desk Officers should assist in monitoring our loan beneficiaries who, as at today, owe us N14,808,000.00. “This assignment has become even more relevant and of great importance to the foundation today because it is the money taken from a revolving loan and in order for the purpose it is serving not to collapse, those owing us should be visited and made to fulfill their obligation by paying up.” The Chairman Board of trustees, NYSC Foundation, Mr. Abubakar Abdullah expressed their readiness to continue the soft loan facility, in spite of low demand. He noted that only N6 million out of the sum of N10million set aside as loan for beneficiaries was utilized so far. “We still have that four million remaining, the board has not met to decide how much we are going to add but at worst we have something from last year and we will add another for this year.” The NYSC Director of Corps Mobilisation, Mr Anthony Ani has called for partnership from organisations to aid NYSC in achieving its mandates. “More than any other time this is when NYSC needs help because the population of corps members coming in is increasing by the day and government cannot do everything especially now that the resources of government is dwindling. “This is the time we need serious partnership not just with the foundation but with any organisation that can help NYSC,” he said. GETTING the story out of Alaba was like crushing granite to squeeze liquid to quench the thirst of a land in drought. After all, thought Trouble to himself, the story should be in the public space. He had, right from the first time that he met Alaba, appreciated the courage of a twelve year old who leaves home because he did not see his future in the life that his father was leading. All over Africa today, millions of young Africans, male and female are abandoning theirhomes and their parents because they feel that the lives of their parents did not provide the dream of their own future. “Now that I am older,” says Alaba, “I can say that my action was foolish but it is the foolish who do not see stumbling blocks in their way, only building blocks.” Trouble smiles to himself. Alaba and agelessness. He was twelve then, now he is fourteen and he talks of now that I am older! The children of nowadays have not had the chance to be children and it is the fault of the parents. “What pushed you out of your father’s house at the age of twelve?” Trouble asked. “My father was a successful politician in an unsuccessful polity.” “What do you mean?” Trouble asks more out of the wonder of the vocabulary than of the meaning of the sentence. “Look around you. Open the newspapers, look at the page after page of panegyrics for successful businessmen, iconic leaders, and peerless examples to the world. Don’t you often wonder if you are in a different planet where values are lopsided and anything goes? Or in a society where the absence of evaluators does not mean the absence of values? My father was successful in this environment. Hundreds of people arrive in our house five six o’clock in the morning and sometimes the last does not leave until past midnight. I hated it. Is this success?” “What constitute success for you?” “I don’t know if my growing up has anything to do with it. I was the second of three children, between an older brother and a younger sister. I could not play with my brother because there were six years between us and I could not play with my sister because the neighbours would laugh and say that I was playing with my wife and it would make me cry for shame and embarrassment. So, I stayed away from everybody. When the political success came I could not stand the crowd. One day, I opted out. My father asked to do something and I refused and he said he should not find me at home when he came back if I did not do what he asked me to do. I don’t remember what he asked me to do but I left swearing never to burden his doorway with my shadow ever again.” “You have not said what constitutes ‘successes’ for you in a life? Were there other fathers you preferred to your father?” “For a democratic system of government to prosper it requires pre- conditions. I am quoting from my political science text book now. It needs a functioning state, minimum unity to the nation (which should be provided by the constitution) separation between the nation and the majority religion and a viable economy. For a country that has multiple extra- budgetary provisions for prayers, I ask my father if those who crowd our compoundeveryday can go to the bank and borrow money using prayer as ‘collateral’? Look at the four pre-conditions I have listed. The first is problematic because we really do not have a functioning state. The second is tenuous because there is no sense of unity no matter how many times our soldiers turned politicians remind us of their sacrifices for the unity of the country, there is no unity of purpose. Separation of religion from everyday socio-political concerns? Not with budgets for prayers! And banks do not accept prayers as collaterals. As for the economy where is it? Yet our politicians – Obasanjo, IBB, Abdulsalaam, even Abacha, are paraded as successful politicians in a place where the most minimal of requirements for a state does not exist. Do you wonder why the youth of Africa do not see their dreams in Africa? Why the youths of Nigeria, with their quick tempo music and gratification now lyrics do not see their dream future in Nigeria? Can you imagine a failing United States of America where Obama would be considered a success? Or a collapsing France where the president would be hailed as an icon of leadership in the modern age? Or a China where everything – light, water, roads, food are beyond the reaches of middling people and the president of China would be congratulated everyday as the leader of leaders? Some university professor once said that when we have no evaluators, it does not mean that there are no values. It simply means that there are no defenders of values in the society, there are no persons holding up these existing values and so everybody pretends that there are no values. Do you understand what I am talking about? And then what are the heritages of my fathers to me? Where is the thing that I point to when the Japanese tell me about their religion and the Chinese indicate their tradition and the British give me their stiff upper lip? Yes, Nkrumah, Mandela, Fanon, and that whole generation of anti-colonial agitators left something behind. But they are not the only ones who agitated against the colonial governments. The Japanese agitated and fought western colonisers. The Chinese agitated and fought not only Japanese colonisers but also western colonisers. But the day after they won their independence, they changed their tunes and, using what they could from their culture, borrowed from the west to go forward. Why cannot my father do the same? Is my father so daft that he cannot see his way forward? Is he so blind that he cannot see others have done it? Is Chinua Achebe’s ‘Tufa! I cannot curse my father’s generation’ enough to stop me proclaiming loud and clear that my father has been an idiot, an illogical buffoon?” http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2016/01/alabas-rejection-of-his-father/ David Olatokunbo Alaba (born 24 June 1992) is an Austrian footballer who plays for German club Bayern Munich and the Austria national football team. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Alaba cc: Seun lalasticlala semid4lyfe honeric01

Thank God for your life FG should scrap NYSC; imagine a scheme without 1. Health insurance 2. meagre allowance (N19800) and you want corpers to work like a normal staff who is earning 100k plus. A level 8 teacher in Akwa ibom ibom is earning N105,000 while a corper earn 19800+10000(state allawee) and the govt want work output to be d same. its time for govt to review the pay structure of the scheme or scrap it. Akwa ibom , Abuja, Lagos Port Harcourt, Borno , Yobe , Adamawwa corpers need to be given utmost consideration in reviewing d pay structure. **imagine risking ones life from Lagos to Bauchi or Sokoto to Calabar coupled with bad road and proximity to armed robbers. #FGRestructureNYSC God bless the dead! |

Femmyfamous4u:The computer/software choose it randomly but most likely make it ur second choice, the cost of living in Akwa ibom is very high compare to Abuja, here a soft drink of 35cl goes for N70, to see how crazy it is to serve here, the issue of 10k is realistic but the payment is not regular but definitely u will get ur 10-11 month payment depending on the time u report to duty. lastly Lagos-Akwa ibom is about 11hrs. **N10,000 state allowance are meant for only those posted to public schools and state ministrys. |

A bill meant to make broadcasting more competitive in the country was passed through second reading in the House of Representatives Thursday. The bill sponsored by Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Nnena Elendu- Ukeje is titled ” a bill for an Act to amend the National Broadcast Commission Act cap N11, laws of the federation of Nigeria, 2014, to provide for competition in Nigeria, promote efficiency and Expand opportunities for Nigerians’ participation in world markets while at the same time recognize the role of foreign completion in Nigeria, and for other matters related thereto.” Elendu- Ukeje while speaking on the bill said it is meant to strengthen the National Broadcast Commission as an independent regulator. According to her, the bill will also create room for competition through deregulation, liberalization, privatization, ensuring free market operation and also enforce penalty(s) to parties that go against the provisions of the law. The piece of legislation, she said, will prevent price or rate fixing, price discrimination , restrictive exclusive content, abuse of dominant market position, and unconstitutional boycotting. The proposed law, she said, is a remedy to the obvious lacuna in the NBC Act and strengthens the NBC as Nigeria has no set of codified laws that speaks to the subject matter. Her words: “this is one sector that does not suffer from customer ignorance as this sector has been subject to motions/ petitions on the floor of parliament and litigations in the court of law. “Justice Chukwujeku Aneke of the a federal High Court had on May 28th 2015 dismissed a suit against DSTV over increase in subscription fees as Nigeria is yet to have a codified set of rules promoting competition in that market. “Competition laws exist under different names in different climes. From antitrust law in the US to anti monopoly laws in China and Russia, and Trade law in the UK and Australia, the underlying factor for these laws us consumer protection.” According to her, Fourth Schedule, Section 39(1) of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria states expressly that every person shall be entitled to own, establish and operate any medium for the dissemination of information. She said the institution went further in Section 16(2c) that “the state shall direct its policy towards ensuring that the economic system is not operated in such a manner as to permit the concentration of wealth or the means of production and exchange in the hands of few individuals or groups. “The intendment of these two provisions is that by liberalizing communication and media, that the sector be competitive in line with our economic policies.” The bill passed through second reading without debate when the Speaker, Hon. Yakubu Dogara called for a voice vote. Source: http://thenationonlineng.net/reps-pass-bill-to-break-monopoly-of-dstv/ cc: Seun lalasticlala |
