Sports / Rio Olympics 2016: The Most Memorable Moments by 2rutalkconcept: 7:29am On Aug 22, 2016
The Rio 2016 Olympics have provided an abundance of memorable moments. Here are some of the best - good, bad, and ugly. The first defining moment of any Olympic Games, Brazilian long-distance runner Vanderlei de Lima lit the Olympic flame during the opening ceremony. He won bronze for Brazil in the marathon at the 2004 Games, but only after he was grappled by a spectator while leading the race. Opening ceremony had warmth, passion and hope One of the first Olympic moments to go viral happened when Pita Taufatofua, Tonga's flag-bearer, appeared at the opening ceremony. The taekwondo athlete emerged topless, wearing traditional Tongan dress and apparently covered in baby oil. It did not go unnoticed. Athlete outfits from the opening ceremony The Rio games became the first to feature a refugee team, made up of 10 athletes. The team featured five athletes from South Sudan, two from Syria, two from DR Congo and one from Ethiopia. They received a heroes' ovation when they walked into the opening ceremony at the Maracana. One photograph quickly demonstrated that the Olympic games caters for all shapes and sizes. This photo of US gymnast Ragan Smith and basketball player DeAndre Jordan swept across the internet as soon as she posted it online. Who is your Olympic body match? Find out here Another Olympic highlight captured on social media. Lee Eun-ju of South Korea and Hong Un-jong of North Korea provided a moment of unity as the two gymnasts - from countries technically still at war with each other - posed for a smiling selfie. North Korean athlete selfie: What happens next? It wasn't always so friendly in the swimming pool. Twitter went into meltdown after swimming legend Michael Phelps was pictured giving rival Chad le Clos a "death stare". He was caught putting his game face on while in the warm-up area of the Olympic pool, prompting #Phelpsface to trend on Twitter. The first golden moment for the host nation - the story of Brazil's 57kg judo champion Rafaela Silva shone a light on some of Rio's poorest residents. From one of Rio's toughest neighbourhoods, the so-called City of God, Silva was disqualified at London 2012 and later labelled an embarrassment. Her victory marked a fairytale rise. Brazil's first gold from the City of God favela It wasn't long before Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, broke into a smile, beating le Clos of South Africa in the men's 200m butterfly final. Some suggested le Clos should have been looking where he was swimming rather than watching his rival. It was not all about the winners in the pool. Rami Anis - a swimmer for the refugee team who fled war-torn Syria in 2015 before travelling by boat across the Mediterranean Sea to Turkey - earned a standing ovation after setting a personal best in the men's 100m freestyle. It wasn't just the swimmers attracting all the attention. Some bored-looking lifeguards - who had been charged with watching over the best swimmers in the world - caught the attention of many people on social media. A memorable moment for a small nation. Fiji's rugby sevens players burst into song as they celebrated winning their country's first- ever Olympic medal - a gold - after beating Great Britain 43-7 in the final. Nineteen-year-old US gymnast Simone Biles took the Games by storm, producing a stunning performance to win the women's all-around Olympic gold medal. She ended up taking home four gold medals and a bronze. She was even watched by Buzz Aldrin, a man who has walked on the moon. Why Simone Biles is the best at the Games The colour of the water at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre became a major talking point, after it turned from aquatic blue to a murky green overnight. Games organisers blamed chemical levels in the water. Pictures of Egypt's women's beach volleyball team swept the internet, after Doaa Elghobashy took part while wearing a hijab. Does this picture show a culture clash? American swimmer Katie Ledecky dominated in the pool, taking nearly two seconds off her own world record to win the women's 800m freestyle final in eight minutes 4.79 seconds - finishing nearly 12 seconds clear of the rest of the field. She also won the women's 200m freestyle, the 400m freestyle and the 4x200m freestyle relay. When the athletics finally got under way on day seven, it was the empty seats inside the Olympic Stadium that initially got tongues wagging rather than the performances on the track. Why are there so many empty seats? Is the #RioProblems hashtag a fair reflection of #Rio2016? The first world record inside the Olympic Stadium went to Ethiopia's Almaz Ayana, who smashed the previous record by more than 14 seconds to win gold in the women's 10,000m. Egyptian Islam El Shehaby caused controversy when he refused to shake the hand of Israeli opponent Os Sasson after losing in the men's judo. El Shehaby was roundly booed by the crowd and was later sent home from Rio, the International Olympic Committee said. Singapore's gold medallist Joseph Schooling, who idolised Michael Phelps as a child, managed to get the better of his hero in pool, winning the 100m butterfly ahead of Phelps, Chad Le Clos and Laszlo Cseh - who finished joint second. A photograph of a young Schooling, then just 13, with Phelps at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 quickly went viral. One of the images from the track cycling came when Laurine van Riessen, of the Netherlands, managed to avoid a nasty crash with France's Virginie Cueff by riding up and along the barrier at the side of the track. Such was the extent of her precautionary action, she became almost horizontal. Some athletes were disappointed to miss out on gold, or with having to settle with a mere silver or bronze medal. Not Aurimas Didzbalis of Lithuania. The weightlifter celebrated pocketing a medal in the men's 94kg with an impressive back flip. A nation gasped when he tripped and fell, but despite taking a mid-race tumble, Britain's Mo Farah became the first British track and field athlete to win three Olympic gold medals as he retained his 10,000m title with a thrilling victory. It wasn't all tears on the podiums. Britain's Sir Bradley Wiggins instead poked out his tongue to celebrate winning the men's cycling team pursuit - his fifth Olympic gold medal. He also became the first Briton to win eight Olympic medals. Wiggins and other podium moments Chinese diver He Zi had just collected her silver medal in the 3m women's springboard final when fellow diver Qin Kai entered the podium presentation. He duly got down on one knee, produced an engagement ring and proposed. She said yes. Never far from the spotlight, Jamaica sprinter Usain Bolt managed to find time to smile for the cameras while easing to a 100m semi-final victory. It prompted a flurry of internet memes. He later won the final in a time of 9.81 seconds - his third 100m crown in three Olympic Games. How do you upstage Mr Bolt? Why not break a world record less than half an hour before the great man was due to run in the 100m final? South Africa's Wayde van Niekerk shattered Olympic legend Michael Johnson's 17-year-old 400m world record by 0.15 seconds to sensationally win Olympic gold. Apparently the credit goes to his 74-year-old great-grandmother - who happens to be his trainer. Old master, new hero: How Bolt was nearly upstaged How can you forget a dancing weightlifter? Big David Katoatau, from Kiribati, threw some shapes every time he successfully made a lift. He finished sixth in the men's 105kg Group B final but certainly kept the crowds entertained. Shaunae Miller of the Bahamas somehow managed to win a dramatic gold medal in the women's 400m final - by diving over the line. Miller stumbled in the final stages and then lunged forward as she headed towards the track, edging out American world champion Allyson Felix to win in 49.44 seconds. Ireland's bantamweight Michael Conlan went out of the boxing tournament in the quarter-finals - losing on points to Vladimir Nikitin of Russia. Conlan was furious at the verdict, which was booed by the crowd, and he vented his frustration at the judges afterwards, saying he had been "robbed" of his dream of winning Olympic gold. A golden night for Britain's golden couple. Laura Trott first won gold in the women's omnium - following up her victory in the women's team pursuit. She then had to sit trackside as fiance Jason Kenny won his third gold of the games and his sixth in total in a dramatic keirin - which twice had to be restarted. One relationship, 10 Olympic gold medals. Not bad. Laura Trott & Jason Kenny - Britain's golden couple Cycling's Posh and Becks: Golden couple 'just Laura and Jason' There were tears on the podium for France's Renaud Lavillenie, but for all the wrong reasons. The pole vault silver medallist was booed by the Rio crowd for a second time in 24 hours, having lost out to home favourite Thiago Braz da Silva in a dramatic final. One of the most bizarre stories from Rio involved American gold medal-winning swimmers and a petrol station. Ryan Lochte, Jimmy Feigen and Jack Conger became embroiled in an international scandal over a made-up robbery. It became an Olympic mystery and resulted in a police investigation and a series of apologies. US falls out of love with the ultimate 'bro' Ryan Lochte, Prince Harry and the 'grill' Was it fratricide? Was it brotherly love? It definitely ended well for the Brownlee brothers, Alistair and Jonny, who won gold and silver in the men's triathlon. The image of the British brothers collapsing into each other arms at the finish line will live long in Yorkshire memories. The inside story of the Brownlees' triumph Unperturbed Bolt, once again, shows his gregarious personality by pointing in admiration at Canada's Andre De Grasse as both men cross the line - in first and second place respectively - in the men's 200m semi- final. Bolt went on to win the final, of course. Morolake Akinosun ploughed a lonely furrow down the home straight after the USA women's 4x100m relay team was allowed to re-run their heat after dropping the baton. They successfully argued they had been obstructed in their first race and ran on an empty track to qualify for the final. All the extra effort was worth it as the USA went on to win the final in 41.01 seconds - the second-fastest time in history. Nick Skelton became Britain's second-oldest Olympic gold medallist when he won the individual show jumping event. The 58-year- old, who had retired in 2000 after breaking his neck in two places, triumphed after a six-way jump-off. The only person older than Skelton to win gold for Britain was shooter Joshua Milner in 1908 - aged 61. Skelton will not beat that record as he has ruled out competing in the Tokyo Games in four years' time. The true Olympic spirit shone out when New Zealand's Nikki Hamblin (left) and Abbey D"Agostino of the USA helped each other out after colliding in their heat of the women's 5000m. D'Agostino tore her anterior cruciate knee ligament in the incident but both runners insisted on completing their race. They were both handed places in the final but the injury prevented the American taking part. The triple triple? The treble treble? However you dress it up, Usain Bolt has nine Olympic medals from three Olympic Games. He said victory in the 100m, the 200m and the 4x100m relay would make him "immortal". It is hard to argue. Bolt's amazing Olympic career in numbers Brazil exorcised the demons of their 7-1 defeat by Germany in the World Cup semi- final in Belo Horizonte in 2014 by beating them in a penalty shoot-out to win the Olympic gold medal. The match had finished 1-1 after extra-time and star striker Neymar, who missed the World Cup humiliation because of injury, scored during normal time before converting the decisive penalty and bursting into floods of tears. Britain's Mo Farah completed the double double as he became only the second man, after Finland's Lasse Viren, to retain both the 5,000m and 10,000m Olympic titles. His four gold medals make him his country's most successful track and field athlete. After the competition, came the party as Rio produced a carnival-style closing ceremony full of music, dancing and colour. The Olympic flame was extinguished with artificial rain - on a night where there had been plenty of actual rain. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe appeared dressed as computer game character Super Mario, with the next Olympics being held in Tokyo in 2020.
Computers / Can Podcasts Turn A Profit? by 2rutalkconcept: 4:25pm On Aug 21, 2016
For most of its short history, podcasting has been a largely amateur business, with few signs that it might become a mass medium that would prove attractive either to advertisers or subscribers. Then Serial changed all that. The true-life crime series about a murder and a possible miscarriage of justice attracted hundreds of millions of downloads - and transformed the way advertisers saw podcasting. This year, in the UK, a podcast called Untold: The Daniel Morgan Murder has been another unexpected hit, telling the story of the unsolved 1987 killing of a private detective, and allegations of corruption among police officers and newspapers. This 10-part series took six months to put together and only got off the ground due to a crowdfunding effort which raised nearly £10,000. But as it became clear that it was going to be a hit, its creator Peter Jukes was approached by a firm called Acast, which has a bold mission to revolutionise the economics of podcasting. Founded in Sweden three years ago, Acast has rapidly become a leading global platform for podcasts, used by the likes of Buzzfeed and the Financial Times. It quickly found a sponsor for Untold, but that, according to Acast's founder, is the bare minimum any successful podcast should target when it is looking to monetise its product. In an interview for today's Tech Tent, Mans Ulvestam told me the reason he and his colleagues set up the business was that they thought podcast economics were broken - "it's been an amateur landscape". Yet they saw great potential in a medium which was far more immersive than many others: "Radio and TV are often on in the background, podcast listeners only listen to things they like when they have time to listen." Tailored ads What they thought was needed was a far more sophisticated form of advertising than "this podcast is brought to you by Wiggins Widgets", with ads that could be tailored to the individual. Mans said advertisers want to be able to tailor their campaigns according to who is listening, what their interests are and at what time they are listening. So Acast has introduced what it calls dynamic advertising, which means different listeners may get different adverts, and those adverts may change over time. For the Untold podcast, it means early episodes, which did not earn anything for the producers, may now have advertising inserted. But as well as offering podcast producers better ways of attracting advertisers, Acast has a more ambitious plan for them - getting listeners to actually pay for their product. The subscription model involves getting people who are loyal listeners to particular podcasts to pay more for additional content. "What we've found," explains Mans Ulvestam, "is many listeners are very happy to pay for the podcast they follow and like if they supply you with an extra episode, or other deeper content or, for instance, being able to binge-listen to all the episodes at once if you pay." One example he cites is popular UK podcast The Football Ramble. Its listeners get weekly episodes for free but, once a month, they are invited to pay for a special programme, such as a documentary on Leicester City's season. It seems many have been prepared to pay up. This is not a route the makers of the Untold podcasts have taken so far, but then Peter Jukes asserted their motive was not commercial. "We wanted to get a story out that nobody in the mainstream media was taking on," he said. He is convinced that podcasting is now a better way than newspapers to reach younger audiences: "I asked a lecture hall full of students how many read a daily paper - three said yes. But when I asked them how many listened to podcasts, about 70% raised their hands." The success of podcasts like Serial and Untold is helping to bring a new audience to this medium. But it is innovation in attracting revenue from the listeners that will support the revival of podcasting with firmer foundations.

Education / WAEC To Withhold 19 States Results Over Debts by 2rutalkconcept: 2:57pm On Jul 27, 2015
Hundreds of candidates who sat for the May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination may not have their results released in the next two weeks, the West African Examinations Council has announced. No fewer than 19 states of the federation owe the council about N4bn examination registration fees. The WAEC Head of National Office, Lagos, Mr. Charles Eguridu, announced this on Monday at a briefing in Lagos. He, however, failed to make public the affected states. Eguridu said, “A total number of 19 states in the country owe the Council in respect of entry fees for state government sponsored candidates for the May/June 2015 WASSCE. Some states also still owe the Council registration fees for the May/June 2014 WASSCE. “We have written to the affected state governments without any response. The poor response of the debtor states is threatening the smooth operations of the Council. “We, therefore, want to publicly plead with the affected states to off-set the registration fees of their candidates as soon as possible, as we cannot guarantee that the results of their candidates for the May/June 2015 will be released along with others.”

Crime / Woman Stabs Lover To Death Over Feeding Allowance by 2rutalkconcept: 5:38am On Mar 23, 2015
Woman stabs lover to death over feeding
allowance

Tragedy struck in the Ajegunle, Apapa area of
Lagos State, after a 20-year-old woman, Gift
Wahab, stabbed her lover, Ebi Amade, 28, to
death.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident occurred
at the couple’s residence on Fasasi Street,
Ajegunle, Apapa, on Thursday, March 19.
Our correspondents gathered that the suspect,
Wahab, who hailed from Uromi, Edo State, had
been living with Ebi since 2013, after she
dropped out of secondary school. Ebi hailed
from Bayelsa State.
The two reportedly had a kid in 2014, who
died in December after a brief sickness.
It was learnt that the couple had gone on an
outing on Thursday when an argument ensued
in the afternoon over feeding money.
Wahab, a hairdresser, was said to have stabbed
the 28-year-old to death after they got home.
Policemen from the Layeni division were
alerted by neighbours and she was
subsequently arrested.
Speaking with PUNCH Metro, the suspect said
she did not intend to kill her lover, adding that
she acted in anger.
She said, “We have been together since 2013.
My father died and I dropped out of school
when I was in SSS 3, and that was when we
started dating.
“On Thursday, we went out for an event. As we
were returning home, I said he should hand
me the key to the house and my feeding
allowance, but he said no. He explained that
he had no money for our feeding.
“Then he started to abuse me. I told him I was
going home, and that he should not bother
about the money again. That was how he
punched me in the face and attacked me while
we were still on the road.
“I left him and went to look for a hammer,
which I used to break the door. That night,
when he came in, I was still angry. I got a knife
which I used to stab him. I didn’t intend to kill
him. I was just annoyed over what happened
in the afternoon.”
It was gathered that neither the victim’s
relatives nor the suspect’s had learnt about the
incident.
However, the corpse of the victim had been
deposited in a mortuary in the area.
A police source revealed that Ebi was stabbed
to death on the right side of the neck.
He added that the police had also recovered
the knife used to commit the crime.
He said, “The couple met each other at a night
club in 2013 and had been dating since then.
They were not legally married. They went out
on Thursday and probably got drunk in the
process. When they returned, there was an
argument and a fight began.
“The suspect ran to the kitchen and grabbed a
knife. She stabbed her lover in the right side
of the neck, and he was rushed to a hospital,
where he died.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer,
DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident,
adding that the matter had been transferred
to the State Department of Criminal
Investigations for further investigation.
He said, “The case has been transferred to the
SDCI for further investigation, while the
suspect is in our custody.”

Religion / 5 Myths (and One Surprising Fact) About Lent by 2rutalkconcept: 12:10am On Feb 18, 2015
Starting on Ash Wednesday, more than 1 billion
Christians around the world will enter the
season of Lent, a time of solemn spiritual
preparation for Easter, the culmination of the
church's calendar.
Despite its ancient history (Lent became
standardised in the Catholic Church around the
year 325) myths about Lenten traditions
abound. Here are five of the most common, as
well as one fact that may surprise you.
Myth 1: Lent is 40 days
Counting from Ash Wednesday to Holy
Saturday, there are 46 days.
Then why do we always refer to the 40 days of
Lent? The 40 days of fasting during Lent do not
include Sundays.
Every Sunday Christians commemorate the day
of Christ's resurrection, thus, Sunday by its
nature is a day of joy and celebration. The
Sundays during Lent are not prescribed days of
fasting and abstinence, so meat is permitted.
Myth 2: Lent ends on Easter Sunday
Lent ends on Holy Thursday.
The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday,
February 18 this year, and ends on Holy
Thursday, April 2, which commemorates Jesus'
last supper with his disciples.
As stated in the Catholic Church's "General
Norms for the Liturgical Year and the
Calendar," the Easter triduum (Latin for "three
days"wink begins with the evening Mass of the
Lord's Supper, and includes Good Friday and
Holy Saturday. It closes with evening prayer on
Easter Sunday.
Myth 3: Catholics abstain from meat during
Lent
Only on Fridays during Lent are Catholics
required to abstain from meat in
remembrance of the sacrifice Jesus made on
Good Friday.
According to abstinence laws, meat includes
warm-blooded animals and birds. Fish and
other cold-blooded animals are not prohibited.
Local Catholic bishops may determine specific
prescribe about what foods are included in
abstinence. This can lead to interesting
exceptions. For instance, in the Catholic
Archdiocese of Detroit, eating muskrat is
allowable on Fridays during Lent. Puffin, beaver
and alligator are permissible in some places,
too -- provided your local butcher has good
connections!
Myth 4: The Pope decides the date of Easter
Thanks in part to astronomers who figured out
when all full moons would occur, for nearly
1,700 years Easter has fallen on the first
Sunday after the Paschal, or Passover, full
moon. The earliest possible date of Easter is
March 22, and the latest is April 25.This year
Easter is on April 5.
The way to calculate the date of Easter was
determined at a meeting of church bishops and
others called the Council of Nicea in 325 near
Constantinople in what is now modern day
Turkey.
Myth 5: Jesus went into the desert for 40 days
before he was put to death
Actually, Jesus spent 40 days in the desert
before beginning his public ministry, several
years before he was crucified.
The Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke --
individual, yet similar, interpretations of
Christ's message -- each tell of Jesus spending
40 days in the desert, where he fasted, prayed
and was tempted by the devil. After this he
went to Galilee where he called his first
disciples and began his public ministry.
The 40 days of Lent are a time to remember
and imitate the life and ministry of Jesus as
Christians prepare to commemorate his death
and resurrection at Easter.
Fact : Since 1975, American Catholics have
donated $250 million during Lent to feed the
hungry around the world

Religion / Why Are Women Forbidden To Pastor? by 2rutalkconcept: 7:35am On Feb 08, 2015
1 Timothy 2:11-13 -"Let the woman learn in
silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a
woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over
the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was
first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not
deceived, but the woman being deceived was in
the transgression."
This passage records 2 reasons why men are
to be the leaders of a local church. The first is
the fact of seniority. Adam was created before
Eve. The second reason is a bit more
complicated, but it has to do with the word
pastor and its connection to the word
shepherd. A pastor is a shepherd for Peter
admonished the elders of the church to "FEED
THE FLOCK OF GOD which is among you, taking
the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but
willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready
mind."
According to 1 Timothy 2, Eve was deceived
by the devil, but Adam knew exactly what he
was doing. Although he was wrong for
disobeying God, his motive wasn't selfish. His
motive was love for his wife who was destined
to die alone for her sin. From this passage, we
can see that Adam is a type or picture of Jesus
Christ and Eve is a picture of the church
("Husbands, love your wives, EVEN AS CHRIST
ALSO LOVED THE CHURCH, AND GAVE HIMSELF
FOR IT" Ephesians 5:25). In John 10:11, Jesus
Christ said that "the good shepherd giveth his
life for the sheep." Adam willing forfeited his
life for his bride-Eve. I believe that this is the
reason why the Lord chose to use only those of
Adam's gender to pastor. If Genesis 3 had been
reversed, with Adam being deceived and Eve
motivated by love for Adam, I believe that the
Lord would have chosen only women to pastor.
The whole thing hinges on a shepherd-like
quality that was seen in Adam.
Religion / Has God Stop Speaking? by 2rutalkconcept: 7:18am On Feb 08, 2015
Many christian have said that God is not speaking to them. The Bible records God speaking
audibly to people many times (Exodus 3:14;
Joshua 1:1; Judges 6:18; 1 Samuel 3:11; 2
Samuel 2:1;Job 40:1; Isaiah 7:3; Jeremiah
1:7 ;Acts 8:26; 9:15—this is just a small
sampling). There is no biblical reason why God
could not speak to a person audibly today. With
the hundreds of times the Bible records God
speaking, we have to remember that they
occur over the course of 4,000 years of human
history. God speaking audibly is the exception,
not the rule. Even in the biblically recorded
instances of God speaking, it is not always clear
whether it was an audible voice, an inner voice,
or a mental impression.
God does speak to people today. First, God
speaks to us through His Word ( 2 Timothy 3:16–
17). Isaiah 55:11 tells us, “So is my word that
goes out from my mouth: it will not return to
me empty, but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
The Bible is God’s Word, everything we need to
know in order to be saved and live the
Christian life. Second Peter 1:3 declares, “His
divine power has given us everything we need
for life and godliness through our knowledge of
Him who called us by his own glory and
goodness.”
God can also “speak” to us through events—i.e.,
He can guide us through arranging our
circumstances. And God helps us to discern
right from wrong through our consciences ( 1
Timothy 1:5;1 Peter 3:16). God is in the process
of conforming our minds to think His thoughts
( Romans 12:2). God allows events to occur in
our lives to direct us, change us, and help us to
grow spiritually ( James 1:2–5;Hebrews 12:5–
11). First Peter 1:6–7reminds us, “In this you
greatly rejoice, though now for a little while
you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of
trials. These have come so that your faith—of
greater worth than gold, which perishes even
though refined by fire—may be proved
genuine and may result in praise, glory and
honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.”
God may sometimes speak audibly to people.
It is highly doubtful, though, that this occurs as
often as some people claim it does. Again,
even in the Bible, God speaking audibly is the
exception, not the ordinary. If anyone claims
that God has spoken to him or her, always
compare what is said with what the Bible says.
If God were to speak today, His words would be
in full agreement with what He has said in the
Bible ( 2 Timothy 3:16–17). God does not
contradict Himself.
