John Herdman: It was a 3-year process to land Ike Ugbo for Canada
Chelsea tried to block Herdman's pursuit of the young forward. But in the end, the Canadian coach got his man.

John Herdman

If nothing else, John Herdman is persistent.

Don’t try putting a roadblock directly in front of the Canadian men’s team coach. He’ll only bust through it, or find a way to navigate around it, and continue down the same path before eventually arriving at his intended destination.

A day after forward Ike Ugbo announced his plans to switch national associations from Nigeria in order to represent Canada, Herdman revealed it was a long process that was rife with many obstacles early on. Herdman ran into a brick wall when he first contacted Chelsea FC three years ago about wanting to talk to Ugbo, then a member of the Blues’ youth setup, about the possibility of playing for Canada.

More on Ugbo's switch:

"Through our excel structure we were able to find a contact at Woodbridge who had let us know that Ike had the potential to play for Canada, this is back in 2018," Herdman told reporters, including One Media.

"So we contacted Chelsea's Head of Recruitment and at the time they just stonewalled the opportunity, they were very clear that Ike wasn't interested in representing Canada although we never got a chance to speak to the player who was young at the time.

"They were very clear he was on a pathway with England and that Canada wasn't an option."

He added : "Ike could have easily went to Nigeria but it was pretty clear that he wants to be part of this journey, this brotherhood we've created with this young group of men, and to take a country somewhere it's never been before and to have that experience that doesn't come around very often in people's football careers".

The embarrassment you people deserve is to be mediocre in scheme of things

U only get embarrassed when u refuse to do things right.... thats what NFF suffered with tammy

When have u seen north Africa nations process players lure and switch the way Pinnick did with Eze and Tammy

They rather go about it privately

U guys need to grow and learn

you can’t put us on the same pedestal as Canada, they aren’t even giants in North America they need all the players they can lay their hands on. This Ugbo is warming the bench for Onuachu who’s kinda surplus to requirement for us. So why should we chase him?

He is

Everton spurs Leicester standard at least

Good pay lured him to England and he was their record signing

A move to atm failed a January move to Barca 2 seasons back also failed ,he is even Leeds highest earner at 100k weekly

I am talking on this Because it can argued that same attitude is been put up towards others better than him we desire

There is a saying how you do one thing is how you do everything

I am saying this because i think it is high time nigeria football authorities take time study and learn from other countries most especially Morocco and algeria on how they lure and get this foreign players

for 3 years Canada has been chasing Ugbo did Canada say kpem?
Before oga coach start to talk na after Ugbo annouce switch to Canada. See scouting process!

I will not put anything past our administrative style. We are Nigerians we know how we do things at home.

Modified
I have been searching Google News (Canada English), I can't even find anything on Canada chasing Ugbo prior to the recent news.
