Lagos - The Presidential Committee on Amnesty to Niger Delta Militants yesterday said it would, this weekend, disclose the various Centres where repentant militants could go to surrender their arms
Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, the Media Coordinator of the Committee, Dr Timiebi Korimapo-Agary, said the centres which had been kept secret for security reasons would be disclosed weekend to allow militants who have embraced the presidential amnesty to come forward and surrender their weapons.
Though President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua proclaimed amnesty in June, she said it will be effectively in operation on August 6 and lapse on October 6. She said the committee is using the period between the proclamation in June and August 6 when it will be effectively in operation to set up the arms collection centres and to embark on consultations.
"We have visited all the states, met with chief executives of states and we are optimistic that the process will be a success", she said.

Commenting further on the arms collection centres, she said the centres would be located close to waterfronts in some areas for accessibility by repentant militants. Speaking further she said once they submit their arms, they will then be taken in for rehabilitation.
"We are going beyond collection of arms. We have a programme of integration by way of scholarship for those with requisite qualification, empowerment for those with skills and vocational training for skills acquisition", she said.
She also said that the committee is in contact with the various militant groups and allayed fears that fake militants may exploit the window provided to find their ways into the rehabilitation centres.
