Senator Dino Melaye, who allegedly threatened recently to beat up another colleague and was involved in a fight a few years ago when he was a member of the lower house, alongside the Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory, inspected the construction of a new residence for the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, in Abuja.


It is likely that the inspection was commenced to cause maximum embarrassment to Osinbajo, whose political godfather, Bola Tinubu, the former Lagos State governor, is reportedly behind the troubles Senate President and Melaye ally Bukola Saraki is facing at the Code of Conduct Tribunal. Saraki is on trial for false declaration of assets when he was governor of Kwara State. He believes his troubles are for political reasons, especially as he went against Tinubu’s wishes in order to seize the Senate presidency.

Melaye was in his full windbag element as he sought to expose the obscene amounts sunk into the white elephant VP residence. These include, 270m naira ($1.3m) on just “three bedroom”, a “gatehouse” first awarded for 55m naira ($276,650) and now costing 275m naira ($1.38m), a church for 88m naira ($442,640) and a mosque for 90m naira ($452,700). The building was expected to cost 7bn naira ($35.2m) and 6bn ($30.18m) has already been paid out.


In March the Financial Times reported that the Nigerian government was still “living the high life”, this is despite the fact that: “Falling oil prices have battered the economy of Africa’s largest oil producer while the government’s refusal to let the naira devalue has eaten away at foreign reserves and caused black market exchange rates to rocket. According to President Muhammadu Buhari, the country will borrow up to $4.5bn on foreign markets this year to plug the gap.”
