Petroleum products: Stakeholders back Clinton over comment on Nigeria’s leadership

Oil industry operators have described United States’ secretary of state, Hillary Clinton’s comment that the consistent importation of fuel by Nigeria is a mark of bad leadership as apt, saying that such avoidable importation reflects the perverse corruption endemic in the system. According to the stakeholders, for a country that can not add the slightest value to crude oil that it produces, indicates that the leadership lacks vision to lead the country.
Nigeria, they said, should have been a major exporter of refined petroleum products to most African countries, wondering how a country like Ghana that has no oil refines what it consumes. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) had voted over $100 billion for both refinery and pipelines projects without anything to show for it, yet the 445,000 capacity refineries in the country have remained largely unfunctional.
A highly placed government source said that the comment by Hillary Clinton can hardly be faulted, saying that foreigners know more about Nigeria than Nigerians know about their country.
“If the private sector can not build refineries, what stops the government from building and if possible sell later to the private sector or operate on joint arrangement similar to what was in operation in the days when Shell BP ran the first refinery while the government owned 60 percent just like what operates in the upstream sector of the oil and gas sector”, he said.
According to him, vested interests that make billions of naira from the importations have consistently encouraged importation of petroleum products. “The proposed green field refineries that the government has been talking about are yet to take off. It is a pity that the leadership of this country allowed importation of most of the petroleum products needed for domestic consumption because the four refineries are not working at full capacity”, he said

Abeg they should ask Hillary Clinton about the fact that despite the USA producing three times the amount of crude Nigeria produces, they still import refined fuels from Venezuela accompanied by insults from Hugo Chavez. Is that a sign of good leadership in the USA?

Produced and import you said. Do you know how many refineries in America? Lets forget the politics attach to it, America Government still try every possible best to make fuel available and more so to be cheap to his citizen at all time. Is fuel cheap in Naija according to minimum wages?Can naija Government be credited for doing the right thing for his citizen. Secondly,How many oil producing country that depends on foreign country for its refineries?

Your argument is lame, moronic and that of a gullible, little nigerian. You don't even deserve any response.

Flawed! grin grin grin grin US don't export crude and they import cuz the one they produce is not enough for their domestic use while we export crude to import refined fuel which is absolutely wrong which ever way you look at it. Its mainly due to bad Govt. We have three refinery in Nigeria yet we can't make use of them. Itz pathetic.

shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked
Logic = zero

I pity this country; its funny, but people with such brainless arguments are the ones that make it to the top in Nigerian politics. Because our politicians are a bunch of brainless thieves.

This is stark reality. The majority of us are like pigs that love to wallow in mud, even the little we know about our country always has some ethnic colouring.
I read commentary on a US study of oil production in Nigeria; did you know that 80% of the oil money goes to just 1% of the population shocked? Well, the Americans know it. They're also sickened by the ND crisis. Hilary Clinton's visit will not be pleasant for our leaders. . . And they wanted Obama!

I so much respect her for such statement, cos i wonder if anyone can tell me the reason why Nigeria has to be importing Oil and we can just refine by self.
Why do we have to always depends on other nations for all things and everything?
Shame
