Georges Freche, from the southern Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, was quoted by Midi Libre newspaper as saying he was ashamed that up to nine of 11 starters on the French team are black.

French President Jacques Chirac condemned Mr. Freche

"It would be normal if there were three or four, that would be a reflection of society," Freche was quoted as saying. "But if there are so many, it's because whites are no good. I'm ashamed for this country. Soon there will be 11 blacks."

Georges Frêche, , put his foot in his mouth on Tuesday evening with comments about the French football team. "9 of them are black. Soon all 11 will be black!" he screamed.

Georges Frêche, Socialist MP and President of the Languedoc-Rousillon region said "9 of them are black. Soon there will be 11 blacks in the team. White footballers really must be rubbish! When I see certain football teams, it hurts me!", on Tuesday evening at a Socialist congress. "

The Socialist MP continued: "Three or four would be normal, that would reflect society. I'm ashamed of this country".

Frêche's comments have already been condemned roundly by members of his own party. Claude Bartolone, the right-hand man of Laurent Fabius, pre-empted France Soir by shouting "Red Card for Frêche!" and went on to say "These are comments worthy of Jean-Marie Le Pen. Frêche is a repeat offender in provocation." EMP Harlem Désir called for the Socialist Party to sack Frêche, who already holds several offices, and to cast him from the party.

This is not the first time Frêche has been out of line. He is soon to appear in court over comments that the Harkis, the Algerians who fought alongside the French in the France-Algeria war, were "sub-human".

Far right ideas have been increasing in France, even among the left wing political groups. Apart from the racist attacks against the colored people, the anti-Muslim current has become strong in French politics.

Dr. Sedat Laciner, Turkish political scientist, argues that France and Europe face a real racist danger similar to the pre-Second World War. “Europe has decide on new or old European values. The old values were based on religious and nationalistic biases and fanaticism. If the European Union cannot base its values on universal new values, the EU would be another disaster as witnessed during the First and Second World War. Right now all of the EU countries are Christian. The Brussels cannot accept any nation from other religions. More than 100 million European Muslims for instance are not fully represented in European institutions.” Dr. Laciner added.
