Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari needs to address grievances in the Delta region where militants have been blowing up oil pipelines in a conflict that has become a “major concern”, a senior British official said yesterday. The swamps of the southern Delta have been hit by a series of attacks on pipelines and other oil and gas facilities that have reduced Nigeria’s output by 300,000 barrels a day, closed a major export port and two refineries. Nigeria has moved in army reinforcements to hunt the militants but British Foreign Minister Philip Hammond said Buhari needed to the deal with the root causes because a military confrontation could end in “disaster”. Crude sales from the Delta account for 70 percent of national income in Africa’s biggest economy but residents, some of whom sympathise with the militants, have long complained of poverty. “It’s obviously a major concern,” Hammond told reporters on the sidelines of a regional security conference in Abuja when asked about the Delta situation. “The idea that your answer is by moving big chunks of the Nigerian army to the Delta simply doesn’t work,” he said, adding that the army did not have the capacity while fighting Boko Haram jihadists in the north. “It won’t deal with the underlying issues.” “Buhari has got to show as a president from the north that he is not ignoring the Delta, that he is engaging with the challenges in the Delta,” Hammond said. Buhari is a Muslim from the north who has not visited the Christian Delta since taking office a year ago, something highlighted by a militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers, which has claimed a string of attacks on pipelines. The group has warned oil firms to leave the region within two weeks and says it is fighting for independence for the Delta. It has said it wanted a greater share of oil revenues and an end to oil pollution. The attacks have driven Nigerian oil output to near a 22-year low and, if the violence escalates into another insurgency, it could cripple output in a country facing a growing economic crisis. Buhari, who has not commented about not visiting the Delta, has extended a multi-million dollar amnesty signed with militants in 2009 but upset them by ending generous pipeline protection contracts. He also cut the amnesty budget by around 70 percent, which partly funds training for unemployed.  Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/uk-warns-buhari-using-military-confrontation-in-niger-delta-could-end-in-disaster/

The clueless coconut head cattle rearer some people call president will not listen because he is blinded by tribal and religious bigotry. The id1otic actions and comments of Buhari will destroy Nigeria. We warned him to be careful and diplomatic in his approach to the issues in the South East and South South but the unintelligent semi illiterate tyrant president choose the path of unwarranted war and violence disregarding the Constitution, judiciary and valuable advise.

THE BIGOTED BUHARI WILL DESTROY NIGERIA WITH HIS NONSENSE APC GOVERNMENT.

Any community that harbours militants or criminals are all terrorists.

Buhari is not Yar'adua. He does not negotiate with terrorists.

NDA keep bombing your land and polluting your environment. It will not be well with whoever advises you not to.

Nigeria still has 30bn to play with. OBJ met 3bn in the coffers in 1999 and Nigeria still survived.

Dear united kingdom, buhari will never negotiate with any militants rather he will use military might and crush whatever rebellious group that want to rebel against the FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA

The biggest mistake the Nigeria government made was negotiating with this riffraffs in the first place. Instead of the state to brutally deal with them when they{militants} started their madness, the FG when and gave them money and power. Which kind of government does that? You gave them money, they use some for their upkeep and the rest the use them in buying weapons to blackmail you again.

Why didn't the government negotiate with boko haram or "Fulani herdsmen"? So just because these ones said the oil is found in their lands, the government are expected to automatically negotiate with them right? If the government should negotiate with these riffraffs, then the government have to negotiate with boko haram or any rebellious group in the country.

Enough is Enough. No group should be allowed to hold the country at ransom again.

Buhari been romancing his enemies since the beginning of this administration. Common UK that catches cold when Russia sneezes advising Nigeria on how approach militancy.

Buhari is a disgrace to the military.

Is there any provision in the construction to withdraw a vote? A friend needs to know.

Albert Einstein defined madness as -"repeating the same thing over and over again and expecting different results each time"

Using the same tactics and getting the same end results and you're still using the same tactics that gave raise to Boko haram, militancy and several spate of violence over the years across the nations is madness

If he likes he should bring in the US marines, it still won't change the fact that more pipelines and oil installations won't be attacked. What PMB and Nigeria needs right now is to have a round-table discussion and implement the 2014 confab. Let's go back to the days of regionalism. Let every region control its resources and pay taxes to the centre. That's the only solution to solving the problems we are currently having.

How can you locate an oil company in Niger Delta and have regional and head offices in Lagos and Abuja? Does it make any sense? Where is that done?

By the time The Avengers are through with Buhari, dollars would be pegged at 500 Naira per $ and petrol pegged at 400 Naira per liter just for the faaji budget to look workable.

I agree we should go back to regionalism but your argument is bizarre. What does regionalism have to do with bombing pipelines. What is the significance of headquarters of oil companies to any of this. Bombing pipelines will not lead to regionalism. It is a mistake to believe that only indigenes can bomb pipelines. In fact Northerners too can bomb pipelines with a lot more deadliness.Igbos can bomb pipelines. Yorubas can bomb pipelinesThe only thing that bombing pipelines will achieve is everyone will learn how to do it just like kidnapping that started in one place and spread everywhere. Do you for one minute believe if Fulani herdsmen learn how to bomb pipelines that the indigenes can stop them?
Let us not allow ourselves to out of anger or frustration lose rationality.
This is not about Buhari. Nigeria has problems that Buhari did not start and will not end. Whatever solution that this problem should have it should not involve making monetary payments to anyone

Nonsense.

Hammond should do his homework before coming out to spew ignorance. Where were the billions that are, and have been allocated to the ND for donkey years reflected in the report? Where is the mention of the mismanagement of the funds? Where is the mention of Nigeria's dire economic situation which made cutting the amnesty budget unavoidable?

Was the amnesty budget for funding the reckless lives of lazy militants supposed to be left intact while States had their own allocations cut leaving hard workers unpaid?

The unrepentant tax dodger should just shut it and face his expenses scandal.
