ABUJA – THE Nigeria Labour Congress,NLC and its affiliate body, the Trade Union Congress,TUC, Monday, vowed to press ahead with its industrial action, scheduled to commence tomorrow if the Federal Government fails to reverse to old pump price of petrol.

The two unions asked the government not only to put all the nation’s refineries to optimal use but also increase minimum wage, besides putting all necessary palliatives measures before deregulation of oil.

Both spoke in separate remarks before formal commencement of the meeting it held with the government over the latter’s increment of fuel price, last week.

But the government pleaded with the labour organisations to see reasons with its action and shelve its planned strike, saying it was open to dialogue with the bodies.

This was even as the governor of Edo State,Adams Oshiomhole, who was at the meeting to mediate between the two warring sides, opposed agitation for wage increment, saying it was not sustainable at the moment.

NLC president,Ayuba Waba and his TUC counterpart,Bobboi Kaigama, said there was the need for government to reverse to old pump price of fuel, given that the development was having a toll on the masses.

At the meeting attended by the Secretary to Government of the Federation,SGF,Babachir Lawal,Minister of State,Petroleum,Ibe Kachukwu,Ministers of Labour and Employment,Dr Chris Ngige,

Budget and National Planning,Udo Udoma,Information and Culture,Lai Mohammed and Solid Minerals,Kayode Fayemi, the two sides were unable to shift ground as at press time.

Dr Chris Ngige, who presented government’s position, said the government was open to dialogue, urging the labour organisations to consider the proposed industrial action as the least possible option.

Before the meeting dissolved into a technical session, newsmen were asked to leave.

Serious? What I know is that NLC will be disappointed. To save face, they should go for 3 days strike and call it off. Any prolonged strike will be resisted.

Watching in HD. May this NLC understand that deregulation of oil sector is an economic exigency at this material time. The effort will only be resisted by the following set of folks:
1. Ignoramuses
2. Mischevious folks
3. Wailers
4. IPOB
5. Pro-GEJ vendetta-seekers

Confused and betrayal NLC and TUC, they gonna walk alone this time around. How possibly can u be agitating for increase in minimum wage at this time of economic crises in Nigeria. Even at 18000 most states still owing their workers 4months 5months salary so if FG increase it now am sure they wil be owing like a year or two. Abeg mak una stil liv am lik dat cuz half bread is better than buns

Re: PMS Price Hike: Labour, FG Talks Deadlocked by Acidosis(m): 7:50am On May 17, 2016
I've already given a breakdown analysis of how the white collar workers would be the worst hit.

Okada men, in spite their zero economic knowledge know how to increase their fees when prices of fuel increase. This applies to other unskilled workers, artisans, etc.

It is the white collar folks, especially those in the private sector that would suffer.

Sell a litre at N1000, that illiterate danfo driver would run his business profitably, it is you the all knowing educated economist with a static salary that will suffer. Before you oppose or support this movement, think! think! and think about your circumstance.

While some can easily make their clients increase their fees, many employees cannot. In fact, when prices of fuel increase, there is likelihood that some would lose their jobs.

If you're a skilled worker, do not resist anti-government forces unless you have an oil bloc somewhere. The same artisans and the rich you want to help with 'subsidy' are wiser.

He only increased it to foo-l the people of Edo state into voting for APC in the coming elections. Afterwards, APC will show them hell like they are doing to Nigerians at the federal level. "419" incresase in salary.
