the work of an amplifier is to amplify the little signal given to it by the mixer.

yeah, some mixers also have amplifiers inbuilt. if you're talking of the traditional mixers, then you need an amplifier.

Every mic or instrument plugs into a channel strip on the mixer.
That channel strip contains knobs for adjusting gain, high, mids, lows; for panning and so on.

Thus, you can customize each instrument or voice sound to the texture you want as well as determine how much of it appears in the overall mix.

Secondly, purchase a graphic equalizer as well as a crossover.

The graphic equalizer gives you more control over the frequencies of the total mix while the crossover channels discrete frequencies to your subs, mids and horns; giving you pure highs, punchy mids and very tight bass.

Btw, a crossover can fry your amp and speakers if you handle it anyhow, like pushing it's mode switch in the heat of operation.

Understand it thoroughly and your sound will be something else.
