Another preventative measure is to avoid drugs
that have been associated with development of
the disorder, including cannabis, cocaine, and
amphetamines.

Psychotic disorders are severe mental disorders
that cause abnormal thinking and perceptions.
People with psychosis lose touch with reality.
Two of the main symptoms are delusions and
hallucinations.
§ Delusions are false beliefs, such as
thinking that someone is plotting against you
or that the TV is sending you secret
messages.
§ Hallucinations are false perceptions, such
as hearing, seeing, or feeling something that
is not there or exists.
The treatment or management depends on the
cause of the psychosis. It might involve drugs
(chemotherapy) to control symptoms and talk
therapy (Psychotherapy). Hospitalization is an
option for serious cases where a person might
be dangerous to himself or others around him/
her.
Some major psychotic disorders include:
1. Schizophrenia
2. Schizoaffective Disorder
3. Delusional Disorder
4. Chronic Hallucinatory psychosis
This article focuses mainly on Schizophrenia.
What many of you out there refer to as
‘madness’
SCHIZOPHRENIA
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder often
characterized by abnormal social behavior and
failure to recognize what is real. Common
symptoms include
· False beliefs
· Unclear or confused thinking
· Auditory hallucinations
· Reduced social engagement; and,
· Emotional expression and inactivity.
Diagnosis is based on observed behavior and the
person's reported experiences. Genetics and
early environment, as well as psychological and
social processes, appear to be important
contributory factors. Some recreational and
prescription drugs appear to cause or worsen
symptoms .
Schizophrenia does not imply a "split
personality", or " multiple personality disorder"—a
condition with which it is often confused in
public perception. Rather, the term means a
"splitting of mental functions", reflecting the
presentation of the illness. The mainstay of
treatment is antipsychotic medication, which
primarily suppresses dopamine receptor activity.
Counseling, job training and social rehabilitation
are also important in treatment. In more serious
cases—where there is risk to self or others—
involuntary hospitalization may be necessary,
although hospital stays are now shorter and less
frequent than they once were.
