Why Post-ume Test Must Stay: An Impressive Throwback Comment From Ui Former Vc. by promise4040: 3:34pm On Jun 03, 2016 |
Last year, a female candidate applied to
study economics in University of Ibadan
(UI) with excellent results in School
Certificate Examination and Joint
Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB)’s
examination. Specifically, the female
potential student of Economics paraded
eight distinctions (A1) in eight subjects at
the school certificate level and 284 marks
in JAMB conducted examination –
Fantastic results combination that
attracted UI to invite her for
“interaction”, UI’s model of Post
University Matriculation Examination
(UME) test. At the post UME interaction,
the panel members were so “impressed”
with her supposed results, that they had
almost asked her to take a bow and go
until someone from the panel, probably
out of curiosity, posted a simple question
to her. Young lady, with your results, you
are definitely going to lead the class, but
before you go, as a prospective
economics student, what is GDP? Dazed.
The lady began to fidget, scratching her
head as she started sweating. Initially,
some of the panel members thought she
was intimidated by the presence of some
professors, thereby, giving her time to
relax. But, alas, the candidate bungled as
she later confessed that someone wrote
the exams for her. In other words, the
results were not hers. However, this
mumbo-jumbo was only uncovered at
the post UME interaction!
If that was a ludicrous case in the faculty
of the Social Sciences, a similar
mendacious situation occurred during
the Post-UME test in the Faculty of Arts,
in which a candidate with equally
considered “good results” who wanted to
study English could not spell “island,
tomorrow and occasion.” Yet, this was a
candidate with distinctions and 275
marks in JAMB’s examination. These two
cases are just illustrations of the beauty
of post-UME interaction, an integrity
check in the university admission
process.
With these kinds of experiences during
the post-UME interaction year in, year
out. One is therefore left curious and
confused when Hon. Samson Positive
from Kogi state sponsored a motion
recently, that the federal Ministry of
Education and the National Universities
Commission (NUC) cancel the so-called
post-UME. His argument was that post-
UME test was an additional
burden to the students seeking
admission into the universities, more so,
many parents could not afford the cost.
He further posited that many
universities were using Post- UME test to
generate money, thereby extorting
prospective students.
Unfortunately, the lawmaker did not tell
the nation how he came about this
ridiculous conclusion from his wrong
assumptions. He did not tell his
colleagues how many universities he
visited in the course of his research and
how many parents complained about the
cost as well as how he measured the
burdensomeness constituted by the
conduct of the post-UME to student
seeking university admission.
Indeed, a wrong problem diagnosis will
always lead to a wrong prescription. It is
stating the obvious to say that the
motion;, which was more impetuous than
methodical has been generating a
serious concern among the stakeholders
because it is fraud tendentious. Without
any fear of contradiction, one can
authoritatively assert that many of the
“fantastic results” being paraded by
some of the admission seekers are
phony. Some of these results from
WAEC, NECO and JAMB are, to say the
least, the voice of Jacob and the hand of
Esau: It is only during the post-UME
interaction (at least, as far as I know, in
UI) that the buried truth resurrects.
That WAEC, NECO and JAMB results
need further scrutiny is not in doubt.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of
Ibadan, Prof. Olufemi Bamiro while
kicking against cancellation of Post-UME
disclosed eI personally participated in the
supervision of the last UTME in Ibadan.
Several candidates were caught with
mobile telephone sets containing answers
to the JAMB examination questions and
JAMB itself had to withhold the results of
thousand of candidates for reasons not
far. Removed from examination
malpractice in one form or the other.”
Prof. Bamiro further said, there is no gain
saying the fact that for every candidate
caught, these are most likely several
others who have escaped with unmerited
marks, yet, these are the candidates who
will be right in front for admission. As a
matter of fact, this is what informed the
need for post-UME.
What is Post-UME? Post – UME, to use the
UI model as an example, is a kind of
interaction based on information
elicitation technique with a view to
authenticating the claims of the
candidate’s academic profile. In UI’s
post-UME interaction model, candidates
are not made to sit for another set of
examination. Rather, it is an interaction
of less than 20 minutes during which
candidates are orally asked a few
questions relating to their proposed
fields of study. For example, a candidate
who wants to study Economics is asked to
say something about GDP, IMF or Bank
reform. Where is the burden in this? UI’s
post-UME model is so transparent that
every candidate knows his fate
immediately. If you can not answer three
questions correctly from five, who will
offer you admission?
However, when people are now calling
for the cancellation of this type of quality
assurance mechanism, as a result of
ignorance or less informed scholastic
research into the matter, it is apparent
that there is hollowness in the advocacy.
If universities will not become breeding
grounds for ill-baked, sophomoric and
dilettantish graduates, then, post UME
test must remain to be part of our
admission process criteria
Since its introduction in UI four years
ago, the percentage of withdrawal level
has reduced drastically. In fact, post-
UME test has a correlation with the
general good performance at the under
graduate level. Between year 2000 and
2008, the average first-class graduates
we have is 63, but last year, (2009) being
the year of the first set of post-UME
candidates, we have 99 students
graduating with first class. Isn’t that
impressive? Cancellation of post-UME test
cannot do us any good!
National Assembly should not be seen as
invalidating misnomer. It breeds
intellectual irritation when people
legislate without data. As a matter of
fact, legislating without data is like
embarking on a journey without road
map. National Assembly must not make a
shipwreck of this brilliant idea of post-
UME test because this motion looks more
like on act of impulse than calm
deliberation!

Am totally against the scrapping of post utme in higher institutions. Basically its gonna affect the average students/those who didn't influence their results. If the order stands. Institutions would be forced to admit students based on how high they score in utme. This might look valid on the surface though, but come on, we all know how messed up the examining system is and how it is prone to malpractices. I graduated from OAU. And its not uncommon to see candidates who scored bout 270 in utme flunk their post utme. Why? Dude/bae have runzed the exam. The implication is that normal students who didn't runz or pull any string who scored an average score of bout 200-230 won't get admitted cos the institutions especially the federal ones won't go for less. But then what do we know?, we are just wailers after all. 1 Like |

Going by some of the threads I've seen on nairaland, post utme has to stay. It's on nairaland one ijiot came here to rant that he is sure his script was marked wrongfully as his teachers wrote the exams for him, it's on nairaland that I saw threads like NECO Geography answers, WAEC Mathematics Objective. Yes, I know it's difficult for most people to come up with the cash for the exams plus when you factor in the stress of travelling but there is the need to encourage the culture of excellence. 3 Likes |

Anyone who wants POST-UTME to be scrapped is a cheat and a thief !!! Yes that is what I feel. I finished from OAU. Ever since POST-UTME was introduced, rate of academic dropouts reduced drastically. So many students cheat and 'runs' their JAMB. POST-UTME helps to weed all these cheats. I have a friend who cheated in 3 JAMB exams. He failed to pass OAU POST-UTME on all 3 occasions. On one occasion he travelled all the way to another state to runs his exam. There was a year, he scored 300+ in JAMB but in POST-UTME he got 7x/400. The arguments for POST-UTME cancellation are not valid at all. Transport Cost: So when you gain admission, you won't travel at all right? Nonsense. POST-UTME Fee: It can't be free. Lecturers that would invigilate the exam have to be paid. Questions have to be printed. 2 Likes |

jamb should be scrapped instead because as far as i know, jamb is worthless, let all schools conduct their exams directly to their prospective candidate and more so, this will be advantageous to the less privileged peeps and admission seekers will also have course to diverse to any versity for knowledge so long he or shr has the finance to acquire the skul examination's form..... |

I'm sitting on the fence as far this decision is concerned. Nigeria always has a way of making even the best policies look haphazard. But to cite cheating in JAMB as a reason for the opposition against scraping Post-UTME is mostly unreasonable. As far as I know, cheating in JAMB is almost unachievable these days with CBT. The funny thing is these corrupt and hypocritical schools also accuse JAMB of corruption, when in fact they are the masters of corruption. A student scores really high, then sits back to see people with much inferior scores getting admitted into the choicest courses while the better students get nothing! If it's only for the benefit of students, why do they generate massive amount of money from the scheme. Many schools generate over 500 million Naira from the scheme and everyone is ignoring such blatant extortion. These rogues even keep extending application deadline when it's obvious they have very limited slots. FUTA last year, released a supplementary form for new courses late into the admission processes just to capitalize on the desperation of students who had already missed earlier lists. They raised the fee of course generating close to 200 million Naira. even though they needed to fill just about 800 slots, they advertised all over Social and print media and ended up getting around 26,000 applicants. Let FG scrap Post UTME as from next year and work really hard to ensure JAMB rewards students proportionally to their efforts. 1 Like |

Elxandre: So they shouldn't advertise the exams. They should let only a few take the exams. You prefer that thousands would complain of not taking the exam. You don't think everyone should be given a fair chance of proving he/her self. You said they don't cheat with CBT? You know nothing Jon Snow. |

chistev12:Even when U.I did the interactive post utme it was all formalities because then the cut off were set on results from both SSCE and JAMB. 60% SSCE and 40% UME. Most people pass the interview then. Once u were invited, its as good as u already gained admission. |
Re: Why Post-ume Test Must Stay: An Impressive Throwback Comment From Ui Former Vc. by Elxandre(m): 11:33am On Jun 04, 2016 |
wman:Job snow kor Ed stark ni. Cheating with CBT is minimal. What is the difference between JAMB'S inefficiency and the corruption happening in these Schools where the ratio of Merit to Connection on the admission lists is 20:80%? You don't get it. They refused to include these new courses in the admission package because they already had a devious plan to generate almost 200 million Naira with fresh forms when the students got desperate after missing out on a few lists. Why was there uproar about the shady Immigration recruitment exercise where multitudes were invited to an exam with very few slots? |

Elxandre:Really appreciative of your own perspective concerning this issue, but here we are in Nigeria, where people draw out their conclusions without any prior assessment and it really sucks to go against something parochially. Let's try to evaluate and think wide before raising our flags of convictions or disapproval for every course. GOD BLESS NIGERIA ! LET'S CULTIVATE A GOOD HABIT OF ADDRESSING ISSUES ! |

Elxandre:People cheat in Jamb like rubbish. Well it's either that, or Jamb marks wrongly, cuz there is this girl I know... She stopped school at primary 2. She went to her uncle's school to continue education, and she advanced only because it was her uncle's school. A close relative of mine wanted to sponsor her to university. So he did a very basic interview. This was a supposed "graduate" of Secondary School, yet she could not spell most words. I'm talking simple words here, for example, asking a graduate to spell "word". My relative also went into maths, specifically asking her the square root of 4,and she couldn't give an answer. Even simplistic addition was unachievable by the supposed "graduate" of Secondary School. But, we decided to let her write Jamb anyway, and she got 200. Tell me how that is possible for someone who can barely read. And there are smart guys I know that couldn't even make it up to 180. I'm talking people I'd be disappointed with if they scored less than 270. In summary, Jamb is not a trustworthy body, and the future of our children's education should not be left solely in it's hands. At least, not until all it's flaws are eradicated. |
