Over 8,300 people have signed a petition asking the United Kingdom to openly investigate stolen funds from Nigeria kept in the country.

If the petition, available on petition.parliament.uk, reaches 10,000 signatures by the November 19, 2016 deadline, the UK government will respond to it.
Meanwhile, if it reaches 100,000 signatures by the November deadline, it will be considered for debate in the UK parliament.

The creator of the petition, Siji Otenigbagbe, lamented that the UK had served as a haven for stolen funds for corrupt Nigerian politicians and their associates since the 1960s.

“These funds are kept as pseudo assets, bank accounts and properties. In law, the receiver of stolen goods is as guilty as the thief. It is about time the UK did something,” he said.

The petition, which can only be signed by British citizens and UK residents, had gathered 8,303 signatures as of Friday, June 3, 2016.

President Muhammadu Buhari had at the 2016 Anti-Corruption Summit in London, demanded the UK to return assets in the country which were stolen by corrupt Nigerian politicians.

This was after the UK Prime Minister David Cameron tagged Nigeria as a “fantastically corrupt” country.

Responding to Cameron’s statement, Buhari had said, “I am not going to be demanding any apology from anybody. What I will be demanding is the return of assets.

Some people would still say Buhari response to the insult of Nigeria from the British Prime minister wasn't proper.

UK is corrupt while Nigeria is extraordinarily corrupt. Only that the system of one country works better than the other when it comes to addressing corruption.

When will Buhari tell us how much he has collected so far. He lied to Nigerians that he will give out the figure on democrazy day but never did. Later shifted to Thursday , nothing again. This man has lost his credibility.

UK government is more corrupt than Nigeria government.

Why would they make their country a save haven for Nigeria political criminals and yet tag Nigeria as one of the most corrupt country in the world.

Abeg! We need our money back, jejely.

I don't even know why the time wasting. Those signatories should have reached 20,000 by now. Maybe they are unaware of the process.

Let me first go and sign with my families, friends, colleagues and even my enemies.

The UK government is like a pot calling the kettle black. Helping thieves to hide stolen money doesn't make you any different from the thief. Cameron is obviously fantastically as corrupt as any politician that has stolen from Nigeria.
