It's few days to payday

On the last week of the month, you start hearing the state government is complaining. They say they can no longer meet up with salaries, and will have to sack some people.

The government finally comes up with another plan

A verification exercise will be conducted, to fish out ghost workers and to save the state millions of naira.

By now, it is the last day of the month. This government eh. Why didnt't they bring up this verification thing much earlier. Abi they wan carry my salary do something else?

You need to borrow money from another friend of yours. You promise to give him back once you're paid.

On the verification day, questions plenty

Like, if the age you submitted as your date of birth is y, and you wrote your First School Leaving Certificate Exam x years ago, how many months were you when you entered primary school? Omo, see JAMB question oh.

Verification takes a total of one week

By this time, the money you borrowed is about to finish

You're now locking your soup pot like this

You already have the phone numbers of everybody working in the Accounts Department

You call them almost everyday; they also do not have a clue

The waiting game continues. It is now 3rd week of the month. And you have not been paid for the previous month. Na wa oh.

Guess who? It's from "ChiChi Accounts". "They will pay tomorrow", the message reads

You begin to arrange yourself. You finally cook the last yam in the house.

This is what you eat on Friday morning before going to work

By 12 noon, no alert. By 3pm, there's still no alert. You begin to call Chichi Accounts, but her number is switched off

And you're calculating how hunger will deal with you by this weekend.

3.45pm, you rush to ChiChi's office only to discover she did not come to work that day.

You sadly leave the office for home. This is how you go home that day because you don't have any money for transport fare.

On your way home, you get a text. Could it be the salary alert?

It turns out to be a text from that bank informing you that you can now load airtime from your phone. Another text enters, this time from that GSM company informing you that you can now become an engineer without going to school, and asking you to text "5" to a 4-digit number to begin

Just as you are about to get to the final bus stop before your house, you get another text. You reluctantly decide to read it. This time around, it's for real. Alert has finally entered

You're so excited that you begin to dance. You change dance steps every minute, like this

It can be so frustrating when I was a corps member, especially if you are very far from where bank is located. You just have to decide between spending that 1k remaining with you or keep for TP when alert enters.

You’re happy now. You cannot even complain again, especially when you hear some states have not paid salaries for 6 months. And your own was only three weeks.
