Confused Government.

And it took the Confused General almost a year to assemble his confused ministers.

Maybe the confused minister don't know what a free market/economy is all about.

I don't know how true this news is.

But in a democratic setting, the Federal Government cannot interfare in the free market.

The Banks are not owned by the Government, and as it is obtainable all over the world, the Government plays a regulatory role and nothing else.

The Government cannot dictate to banks on who to sack or not.
so,they should allow them to be sacked and go hungry, and of course you know say HUNGERBAD abi. Eran

In the words of Gloria Maduka from Inspiration FM..
Who are they kidding.... Minister just wants it to seem like they are concerned over the issue but knows fully well they have no oversight whatsoever over hiring and firing of bank staff.. Chris Ngige for me anyway has always been an unserious fellow lucky to find himself in the corridors of power so most times he spews a lot of meaningless talk....

HOW CAN A GOVERNMENT WITH COMMON SENSE AND FOCUS "ORDER" PRIVATE BUSINESSES not to fire/sack workers This just shows how clueless and ridiculous this present administration is. You can't "order" a private enterprise to hold on to staff who they can not longer afford to pay.

The Government and/or Ngige as a minister can't ask banks to keep a workforce it doesn't need or cannot sustain.

Truth is the economy is bad.

Until the economy improves, job loss will keep happening.

And do we have it confirmed the FG really made that statement. Too many false news around these days.

"ALLOW"? A private business doesn't need permission to hire or fire anyone. It's sad that the average nigerian is clueless about how the free market works. The military mentality has destroyed the fabric of the nigerian society.

This is utter nonsense.

It is obvious the dire state of the economy left prostrate by Buhari's statist policies is already having a devastating effect on the banks.

Unless those policies are scrapped and replaced with proactive ones, more job losses will follow.

This policy maker are dumb and irrational in there policy.

Which labour laws are they refering to?
When your economic policy are leading to decline in Revenue what are you expecting?
This is total market failure: good intension but bad market outcome.

This is not military regime.....go and ask zimbabwe the consequence of similar laws in there country.
Government should create business friendly economic policy, not giving orders to private entity.

Increase electricity tarrif, increase cost of petrol, postal stamp fee on money transfer, Bad fiscal policy(cosmetics exchange rate system) all these lead to negative multiplier effect in the society.

Companies are being run for profit motive. Not charity organization.

Yes. They should not interfere in the banks hire and fire.

Going hungry can be prevented when the government helps restart economic activities to greater level. It's not private companies business to stop Nigerians from going hungry.

BOLAUWA:
For those who think the govt has no right to tell the banks to keep the workers, ur wrong. We have been put into so much suffering in this country that we no longer know the right thing. Every country has what is called the LABOUR LAWS, which deals with the rights and relationship of the employee and the employer. Ideally, it is wrong to just layoff a staff without informing the staff and preparing a severance package. If the staffs protest to the govt, as they have done, the govt has a right to intervene, and in this case,d govt is waitin for the outcome of a meeting.
May you be bless. The long rule of military and 16 years of misrule of PDP coupled with a self centered Labour Union leaders had made many gullible Nigeria believe that FG and Labour Union can not stop a retrenchment, most especially those that do not follow the guidelines prescribed by the labor law and the constitution.

Please Ngige should also look into recruitment process and compensation. We still have business paying their workers less than minimum N18k wages. Most of schools and SMEs even some bank outsourced staff fall into these categories.

Unemployment is NOT part of an economy.

Unemployment is an EFFECT of bad or weak economic policies. And it's subject to global trends

Banks are private institutions that government can't interfere in their Issues. HR for that matter...

Do you have it on record there was no severance package paid, or guidelines weren't fillowed, or you just assumed.

There is no minimum wage for private sector in Nigeria. It's only operational in the Civil Service...

The bigger picture is the Government should industrialise the economy and people will get jobs easily. Not getting involved in hire and fire matters on pages of the newspaper. That's a waste of government authority.

China lifted 18million people out of poverty in 10years. That's 18m people with secured jobs that earn well.

That's what Ngige and every other Labour Minister since 1999 should have achieved. That's 17 years... Enough time to lift 20m people out of poverty if we copied the Chinese

I don't think minister of labor knows what is saying, this is the same govt that withdrew all govt fund from banks to Treasury Single Account (TSA) knowing full well that, that is the fund banks use to trade. Ever Since all this funds has been moved to TSA it has affected banks profit base. So no bank should be blame for retrenchment. But govt should do something fast so that the economy will not over night.

This govt is a joke. Do they think governance is village meeting or cooperative society? Who gave them the power to direct private institutions on how to run their business. They made the economy unfavourable for business because of their clueless policies, now they also want to kill all businesses by giving them order on how to run their business. What a joke from this illetrates that are now in power.
Re: Breaking: FG Order Banks Not To Sack Workers by Akhocharlie(m): 8:01am On Jun 04, 2016
This government with their funny policy. Do you think they power to do that in a democratic system when employers is responsible for their employees remuneration? I laugh. 9ja. was it because Minister of labour was rated 2/10. God help us.

You are right...I suppose. (and I gave you a like by the way).

But...most banks right now are declaring losses. And if they do not start sacking staff right now (to keep the profits up)....it could make them look less profitable...even start declaring losses....which could lead to people taking their money out of said banks...which could lead to them collapsing...which could lead to much bigger job losses.
Yes you are right, but the sack should follow the guidelines prescribed by the law. That is, the affected staff will be notified stating the reasons and fact that made it unavoidable for the company to reduce her staff strength. Negotiate their pay off packages and notify them the date of termination. Not waking up in morning and receiving a text message that you have be sack with not reasons or getting to your work station and discover you can't log in with you credentials and later told you have been sacked.
The great benefits of the law is to provide the affect staff enough fund to cater for his basic for at least 4 months or able to invest and carry on small scale business. You can't be lay off to become a burden to the society, that is the essence of labor laws.

@ fkj950ax
I hope you can see my point of view in the previous post above. I do agree with your assertions but at least the Minister of Labour directive is not out of order.
