Oilandgas1:
The federal government has directed banks, insurance and financial institutions to suspend plans to sack workers in the sector. Minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige in a statement said; “Following spate of petitions and complaints from stakeholders in the banking, insurance and financial institutions, I hereby direct the suspension of the on- going retrenchment pending the outcome of the conciliatory meetings in the industry,” “This is as a result of the apprehension by my office of the various disputes in the sector in accordance and in compliance with the provisions of the labour laws of Nigeria. “In this wise, all the retrenchments and redundancies done in the last four months and all proposed ones should be put on hold pending the outcome of the proposed stakeholders’ summit for the banking, insurance and financial institutions’ employers and employees, slated for July 2.” The statement added that the continued retrenchment and redundancy by the sector were jeopardising the outcome of the reconciliatory and mediatory processes undertaken by the ministry.

This is the first government that will do a census on animals and chickens in Nigeria. The point is they never had any plan or set objectives ,they only wanted power and the access to the nations vaults but unfortunately now the global economic climate isn't favouring the nations vaults. This government simply has no idea about what the Nigeria problem is or how to tackle them

Off topic....but knowing how many chickens, goats, cows, etc is very good for planning purposes....especially in the Agric sector.

Helps government to allocate resources better...as well as in land planning, and so on.

Here is an interesting article: http://www.economist.com/blogs/dailychart/2011/07/global-livestock-counts

The government does not have the right to order banks to stop sacking because the government doesn't own one bank.
They should rather improve the economy and sacking will stop.
Nonsense APC cluelessness

I don't know how true this news is.

But in a democratic setting, the Federal Government cannot interfare in the free market.

The Banks are not owned by the Government, and as it is obtainable all over the world, the Government plays a regulatory role and nothing else.

The Government cannot dictate to banks on who to sack or not.

laughable indeed…. FG should equally tell me how many staff I should employ…

Thanks dude in addition to what you wrote the gov should also know that banks are reacting to the economic policy of the gov.The various fiscal policies of the the gov at present does not augur well for banks to operate profitably.

What about those once that have been sacked. Would they call them back?

PMB's continuous silence on this burning issue calls for worry. He has not made a single comment on this since he returned from his trip abroad

FG's orders to suspend the sack is important to avoid throwing the economy into further chaos. The banks are complying perhaps because this whole planned
act by worse hit banks is only a permeditated attempt by banks to speak with one voice against the harse TSA policy and other issue for an anabling environment.

It is obvious that the world has heard the voice of the banks this way hence FG may be compelled to equally shift ground during the meeting for reconcillation
so there can be a relief on the banks and hence the disengaged staff can all be recalled. It is however clear to the banks that they acted outside labour laws to terminate appointment without notice or severance of any manner-all at the same time.It is interesting to note that some affected staff where even cajoled to submit their voluntary resignation letter just in a bid to absorb such banks from not paying any benefit. This is all in the idea of shoring up the book value of the banks with the entitlements derived from exploiting innocent staff who were hurriedly donated for this purpose.

I believe that FG fighting a good course since ngige has repeatedly state that banks are only advice to cut down on unnecessay expenses to enable it operate below par in trying times as these rather than break the labour law to exploit citizens of their career entitlements.

If Ngige did not achieve good results when he deployed this style to curd sack in the oil sector am sure he would not be motivated to apply same again in banking sector. At least my now he would have been cautioned by his boss, the president, after all this while if he was not speaking the mind of MR PRESIDENT on this issue.

If a bank makes losses while its competitor are making progress within the same economy it should be humble and willing enough to explore other means of surviving hard times rather than shamefully passing blames.

The rights of innocent citizens have being violated without any due regards for the law and as such the mass sack such be suspended to give room for better ideas to improve the situation in our economy in trying times.

As far as FG is concerned the prevalent mass sack is banks is illegal and certainly not the solution to the economic situation.

All affected workers in the last four months can assume they are on leave on suspension from work pending the outcome of the meeting which promises to be favourable.
