Ogbonnaya Ikokwu, Umuahia
Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, has restated his position that the state had no land for grazing.
The governor’s comments followed the alarm raised by residents of Akanukwu in Ohafia Local Government Area of the state that their land had been ceded to herdsmen by the Brigade Commander of Ohafia Army barracks.
Ikpeazu argued that the entire South-East zone had less land mass than some states in the North, adding that grazing reserves should be limited to the North as Southern states have limited land.
“Our position is that the entire landmass of all the states in the South East is less than the landmass of one state in the North,” he said.
“There is no grazing land in the South East. We are looking for land; we don’t have enough. Again, God put a lot of minerals beneath our soil. Nobody should graze on them.”
Ikpeazu cautioned Abia resident against entering into business deals with herdsmen for personal interests that could undermine community interest.
The governor promised to meet with the Brigade Commander with a view to finding out the veracity of the allegation, while appealing to the locals to remain calm and not take laws into their hands.
The traditional ruler of the community, Mba Odoekereke, had raised the alarm during a town hall meeting with the state governor at the Ohafia council headquarters.
He condemned the continued destruction of the community’s farmlands and crops by cows, alleging that the continued presence of herdsmen in the barracks posed serious security risk to the natives of the community.
