Venezuela police arrest 400 for looting in food shortage At least 400 people have been arrested in Venezuela after rioting and looting over food shortages. Over 100 shops in the coastal town of Cumana were hit and at least one person died according to local media. Venezuela has one of the world's highest inflation rates at 180% and people can queue for hours for subsidised food. Opposition politicians blame government mismanagement for the shortages. But the government says the shortages are part of an economic war being waged to drive President Nicolas Maduro from office. Most of the shops were looted for food according to opposition congresswoman Milagros Paz. She is quoted in Venezuelan newspaper El Universal as saying that the authorities "have not admitted the food distribution emergency". But according to the socialist governor of Sucre state, Luis Acuna, it was off licenses, opticians and clothes shops that were targeted in the looting, reports El Nacional. Food and medicine are in short supply and street protests have become increasingly agitated. More than 10 attempts of looting happen every day, according to the non-governmental organisation Venezuelan Violence Observatory. Diosdado Cabello, a lawmaker from Mr Maduro's PSUV party, blamed the opposition for inciting violent protest. "These are fascist groups which are generating unrest," he said. "Don't come to me with this fairy tale that these are spontaneous protests," he said on his television programme. http://newsnownigeria.com.ng/financial-crisis-citizens-venezuela-now-steal-eat-read/ |

Only God will save Nigeria too. We are at the most vulnerable time in terms of food security. Sultan of Sokoto just alerted of food shortages in Nigeria this week. Reports also say that severe cases of malnutrition are being reported in some part of the north. For the first time in Nigeria's history, we are going to be fed by the Western nations like Somalia. 3 Likes |

Reski: Indeed. Oil is fast becoming worthless, and unfortunately due to failed governance we are still dependent on the sinking commodity. We have to diversify quickly so oil can take the back seat. Meanwhile some mofos are bombing their underdeveloped region to further destroy other means of their livelihood, even as hunger threatens a people much more endowed with oil. 4 Likes |

In QuotaSystem: Forgive him. I used to envy venizuela before when I heard how Hugo Chavez transform the oil sector. 90% local companies 10% intl comp. Free medical care at home for free for all citizens .17 free universities, all u have to do just come to school the rest will be cater for. And many benefits I couldn't remember. That's why moduro was able to win the presidency because of the love for Hugo Chavez. The West and America never liked Hugo Chavez and his policies against foreign company controlling their oil sector. But today where are they with their huge oil resources? 3 Likes |

Despite their population being the size of Lagos and Ogun states combined and having the largest oil reserves in the world, it proves oil is not everything! They failed to diversify their economy as Nigeria failed. 2 Likes |

Izonpikin: You bomb Nigeria's oil facilities and expect the zone to not be militarized? Wake up. So you know, the northerners do not need the Niger Delta to dominate the oil industry. Dangote is building Africa's largest refinery without a single pipeline from the Niger Delta. This government will not be blackmailed. Continue bombing your lands and when you're done, burn your houses as well. It's quite foolish to stop at this point. 4 Likes 1 Share |

With the kind of vast arable land we have in Nigeria and the knowledge of what farming did in the past in Nigeria, whoever dies of hunger in Nigeria deserves to die!! A cousin who is into okada business in the village just decided to try cucumber farming on a portion of the vast family land. Last I heard is that it took him 4 weekends to haul his harvest to Lagos for sales. He's ventured into tomato farming now with some Cotonou people all in a remote village in the SW. We don't have a choice particularly now that Christmas and an opportunity to light up the sky with fireworks came very early for some folks. These are hard times but whoever is willing will survive. 3 Likes |

Izonpikin: ...And give away the privileges that come with being an educated Northerner in Nigeria, to become a criminal supporting, lazy and self-destructive N/Deltan? No thank you. Dangote is Hausa Fulani man, building the largest petroleum refinery in Africa without a single pipeline from the Niger Delta. I have a better chance of dominating the oil industry (or 'drinking as much oil as I can') as a Fulani man than as a Niger Deltan. Let this fact sink in. Yes, the bombing and destruction of your lands must continue due to your obstinacy, and the military intervention is inevitable as a result, hence my prescription of both doses to cure the madness of the delta. Not that I expected you to process that so it's fine. 1 Like |

Na your own go tell you o. I'm thousands of miles away in the Queens country so as I said earlier, you should blow yourselves to smithereens, leave nothing standing. All your bombs can neither bring back Jonathan, stop northerners from controlling the oil industry, or clean up your devastated homeland. Take that to the bank. 1 Like |
