Phock the golden eaglets. How many of these nuccas went on to do anything at the senior stage where it really counts? Even when they make Senior team, they only perform for 3 or 4 years, after which they hold the team hostage to their old legs. Thank God for MRI scans. No longer do we have to celebrate pyrric victories anymore.

Shut your gob and blame the spastic NFA who continue to fail us grooming the kids.
U can not deny the talents of Osundo, Dimeji Lawal, Ikpeba, Keshinro, Goddy Opara, etc.
Those were raw talents back in the days whose life woulda turned around under Wenger or SAF.

more recently our national team players dont come thrugh the ranks anymore cos when they are meant to be at their prime, the truth is by then they are past their footballing prime.
MRI scans is the way to go, so what if we lose cadet championships, we have world beaters a few years in waiting.
but its not only in africa these things are done, its almost everywhere.

Nothing to do with MRI scans. . . . . .People like Kanu Nwankwo, Oruma, Ikpeba and few others made it cos they were lucky to have worked with brilliant man managers. Majority of the so called Eaglets of em yesteryears fled to useless clubs in Europe in a bid to escape the poverty echelon in Nigeria.

Kai dat 1993 squad was something else. Chei see as name after name just dey roll off man pikin's tongue. I can also see a few players made it through based on their surnames alone. Dem no even get shame. Living off their bruva's talent.
Re: Remembering The Golden Eaglets Of Yester Years by AndreUweh(m): 8:08pm On Sep 03, 2009
HIS name is Phillip OSONDU. Osondu in Igbo language means race of life. The Canadian media misspelt it Osundo. He hails from Okigwe in Imo state but was raised in Aba. He started his football career with Falcon fc which later became Enyimba F.C.

Don't mind those little kids.
Where were they when i was following the likes of Segun Odegbami and Felix Owolabi of IICC in 1976?
I was in West Berlin in 1974 when East Germany pipped West Germany 1-0 and Dr. Kitaun is arguing Osundo's name with me.

Re: Remembering The Golden Eaglets Of Yester Years by AndreUweh(m): 9:19pm On Sep 03, 2009
Osundo does not mean anything in Igbo language. A lot of Nigerian players' names have been unintentionally spelt wrongly for example, Michael Obi as Mikkel Obi. in Saudi 89, Nigerian commentaors were pronouncing OSONDU and not Osundo.
I happen to know this chap personally and even met him coincidentally in Jan 2007 at Aba.

The Scotland 1989 Squad of Victor Ikpeba, Kayode Keshinro, Segun Fetuga, Godwin Okpara etc is reputed to be the best set of Eaglets though they didn't win the championship.

Only Ikpeba and Okpara played at the highest level.

Do you guys remember John Zaki ? what a great Player he was then, go watch Mauritius 1993 you'll appreciate John Zaki, Precious Monye, Jide Oguntuase and even JJ oKocha was part of that illustrious team.

Lest i forget Patrick Mancha he did wonderfully well with the BCC Lions of Gboko side that won the Cup of Winners in the 90s.

Where is Victor Brown and Femi Opabunmi of Trinidad 2001 ?

Osondu teenager?

I still remember the 1987 final with Lemmy Isah in goal Dimeji Lawal was called Dimeji Mohammed.

The wing play of Dimeji Lawal and Tony Emodofu can spill defences like hot knife on butter. Bawa Abdulahi, captain I didnt know Segun Fetuga was in the 1987 squad. I also used to think Baba Jibrin a substitute in the finals was a son to Jubril Aminu mister of Education cool cool cool cool

The 1987 finals was the last time I cried because of a football game because I felt we were robbed.

I remeber Lemmy Isahs goal kicks were not going beyond the center line, Our defenders actually cleared a Russian (CCCP) ball off the line, A Nigerian player dribbled his way into the Russian 18yard box when the ref blew offside,

The match went to penalties and we lost. I cried so tay cool cool cool cool

It was Dimeji Lawal o,even Pele couldn't hide his disgust. It was day light robbery.Lemmy Isa the smiling GK. . . the 87 and 93 team had to be the best "under 17"

The Scotland 89 team that lost to Saudi Arabia(i think) had a certain Keshiro Kayode that uses his head very well. . .

Is Sebastin Imasuen still alive?

so, what does he do for a living these days?? grin

@DK
It was Dimeji Lawal that dribbled past the entire defence and when he was about to pull the trigger in the 18 yard box,
the referee blew for a direct free kick outside the box, claiming dimeji had been impeded earlier shocked shocked shocked
It's not today, we have been having buffoons as referees. grin

It's a pity many of these guys were over aged when playing the youth competitions.
Only a few of them went on to greater things after these competitions.
Re: Remembering The Golden Eaglets Of Yester Years by Sauron1: 2:19pm On Sep 04, 2009
The golden Eaglets didn't really play well in the Canada 87 final against the Russians.
Although, they shoulda won it but they bottled the shoot-out.
I think the best under 17 match i saw then was Nigeria Vs Italy when a certain Cappellini made Nigerian players look like amateurs.
He was immense and Lemmy Isa took everything the tall Italian threw at him.

The man of the match undoubtedly was the Italian number 11 Massimiliano CAPPELLINI, that guy scored 2 disallowed goals but Lemmy Isa made saves from the number 9 Fabio Gallo, Melli and Gasparini.

The Eaglets played so well too Osondu was a torn in the flesh, also Anthony Emeodofu.

Even from the Italian side the only name i knew that made it to the national team was Pessotto .

Please try watch this match and re-ignite fond memories.
