The Spices of Love

The aroma, appearance (eye appeal) and taste of a meal attract you to want to eat a meal. This attraction is made possible by the spices or seasonings used such as cooking oil, salt, maggi (or other brands), curry, thyme, onions and other seasonings. They (spices) also determine the satisfaction you derive from consuming the meal.

They’ve all come to cook the main food such as Rice, Beans, etc. There is no (need for) them if there’s no main food. In the order of preference therefore, the main food comes first. It is when you find the main food that the need for spice or seasoning arises.

None of these seasonings or spice can be eaten to fill the stomach. They cannot hold you. They only condition the main food and attract you to it. They are the ones that require regulation (control) regardless of how much you love or hate them because too much can harm or spoil the broth, too little can make the meal tasteless and unattractive. It’s the main food that fills and can hold the stomach. It is the foundation on which the spices or seasonings are built. In the worst scenario, the main food without them can hold you but they without the main food cannot hold you (for long).

They are the spices of food.

In the same vein, the beauty (looks), behaviour, dressing, religion, wealth, tribe, family background, education, kindness, sense of humour, selflessness and other attributes of a person are what attracts and make you choose that person as a friend or spouse.
They’ve all come to spice up that love that ought to exist as foundation. These attributes cannot sustain life. Like the spice of food, they are all reactionary or conditional. You are attracted and love that person based on what you know or see. If these attributes are withdrawn, your love for that person cracks. Many of us have made choices for marriage partners based on this emotional love only.

They are the spices of love. They are the love that needs control (how you react to them).

But there’s the other love, the one on which these attributes must be built, the one that stands when all else falls, the one that does not need control. It is that love that’s not reactionary, not conditional. It is the core, the foundation of love. It is called the Blind or True love.
