routik: MBA is professional. |
Re: Professional Masters Or Academic Masters? by iamclime(m): 8:58pm On Jul 03, 2016 |
Odunharry:This Op nailed it! Academic masters leads to further excursion into academic research and pedagogy while professional masters focuses on practice. The major advantage, however, is that while many firms will accept academic masters in lieu of professional masters, no institution (e.g. university) will accept a professional masters in lieu of academic masters. Take, for instance, an MBA and an MSc. Business Administration. The MSc. is senior any day. 1 Like |

dmanj: In Nigeria, you're better off with an academic degree. You can have the best of the two worlds, NGO work and your Phd degree later. It's our mentality and it will take a long time to erase that. 1 Like |

routik: It's professional masters. As a general rule, in most cases, when you hear Master in/Master of a course/program directly, it is professional. E.g Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master in Public Administration (MPA), etc. But when you hear Master of Science (MSc), Master of Arts (MA), Master of Education (MEd) in a program, it is academic. Hence, we have MBA and then MSc. Business Administration. 3 Likes |

Adesiji77: This will depend solely on the university board acceptance, you might be considered especially if the professional course is closely related with the PhD area of specialisation. My thoughts gathered from what I've heard professors talked about. 1 Like |

Adesiji77: The Doctor of Public Administration program is designed to provide senior-level public managers, or quasi-public managers, with the substantive skills, knowledge and values necessary in the field of public administration. The program is meant for people well grounded in this area and those still thinking of what to do. |

lollmaolol: Yea, it also depends on d program because I know in university of ibadan, professional MPH program is equivalent to M.phil and u can progress to do a PhD with it. 1 Like |

Adesiji77:If it's nigeria here it's impossible , but like in the us or canada if u have a good first class u can even be given admission for phd and scholarship for phd without any masters self. 1 Like 1 Share |

Thanks to everyone that has contributed. Considering the field I'm going into (IT), I think a professional masters will be better as it focuses on the job skill. |

Re: Professional Masters Or Academic Masters? by biggie73(m): 10:23pm On Jul 03, 2016 |
Both professional and academic masters lead to doctorate degrees. With professional masters, one focuse on the practical aspect, and it's for corporate and academic world, while academic deals with teaching and theories. |
Re: Professional Masters Or Academic Masters? by biggie73(m): 10:28pm On Jul 03, 2016 |
greatwhite:...in Nigeria Professional master may be terminal, but one can progress to doctorate degree or levels. Even in few Nigerian Universities, one can do executive PhD with professional masters. |

Bluffly: That's very true sir, doctorate of business administration, but most people just need the MBA certification in Nigeria. Thanks anyway, I just learnt something new. |

Re: Professional Masters Or Academic Masters? by biggie73(m): 11:05pm On Jul 03, 2016 |
greatwhite:...University of Port-Harcourt offers Doctorate of Business Administration. Many foreign universities' professional masters lead to PhD and executive PHD like City University UK, Edinburgh Napier University, Aston University, University of Liverpool etc. These are all top global university with AACSB accreditation. |
Re: Professional Masters Or Academic Masters? by greatwhite(m): 11:15pm On Jul 03, 2016 |
biggie73: We have very few universities doing that in nigeria. Doing pro masters is a serious risk. not everyone wants to go to UNIPORT. I'll take academic masters over pro masters any day. Noting is guaranteed in nigeria. Even with all d certification u might not get a job. |
Re: Professional Masters Or Academic Masters? by biggie73(m): 11:25pm On Jul 03, 2016 |
greatwhite:...as big and populated as Nigeria, Uniport and one useless university in the Northern Nigeria are the only universities offering executive PhD. Where there is no job, people have limited choices. When I study,I do it cos I want to- not that I want anything from my useless country. 1 Like |
