This will depend solely on the university board acceptance, you might be considered especially if the professional course is closely related with the PhD area of specialisation.

My thoughts gathered from what I've heard professors talked about.

This Op nailed it! Academic masters leads to further excursion into academic research and pedagogy while professional masters focuses on practice. The major advantage, however, is that while many firms will accept academic masters in lieu of professional masters, no institution (e.g. university) will accept a professional masters in lieu of academic masters. Take, for instance, an MBA and an MSc. Business Administration. The MSc. is senior any day.

Professional master is terminal, that you can't further to PhD. Professional master is ideal for someone in the industry.
Academic masters is not terminal, you can become a professor if your career is academics.

...in Nigeria Professional master may be terminal,but one can progress to doctorate degree or levels. Even in few Nigerian Universities, one can do executive PhD with professional masters.

...University of Port-Harcourt offers Doctorate of Business Administration. Many foreign universities' professional masters lead to PhD and executive PHD like City University UK, Edinburgh Napier University, Aston University, University of Liverpool etc. These are all top global university with AACSB accreditation.

We have very few universities doing that in nigeria. Doing pro masters is a serious risk. not everyone wants to go to UNIPORT. I'll take academic masters over pro masters any day. Noting is guaranteed in nigeria. Even with all d certification u might not get a job.

...as big and populated as Nigeria, Uniport and one useless university in the Northern Nigeria are the only universities offering executive PhD. Where there is no job,people have limited choices. When I study,I do it cos I want to- not that I want anything from my useless country.
