Enugu traditional rulers collect grazing money from herdsmen

'Enugu traditional rulers collect grazing money from herdsmen'

The Transition Committee Chairman of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State ,Chief Cornel Onwubuya, on Monday told the Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Nimbo Killings that some traditional rulers collected money from the herdsmen to permit them graze their cattle in some communities within the Uzo-Uwani council area, of Enugu state.

He said that because the herdsmen part with their money before being given pass to graze their cattle, they felt quite emboldened to do whatever pleased them including feeding their cattle with farm crops and destruction of farms.

“Based on my interactions with them, they don’t see anything wrong in what they are doing in people’s farmlands,” he said. “The problem is also that you see a very small boy controlling over 100 cows. How can a small boy control such number of cattle without them causing destruction on farms?” he added.

Answering question from the commission on whether money were collected from herdsmen by the native rulers or other individuals before permitting them to pasture their cows, Onwubuya said: “We ‘ve had cases where some traditional rulers were said to have collected money from the herdsmen; and not only the traditional rulers, we have had instances where sometimes people collect money from the herdsmen and give them pass to graze in their communities even when such people are not authorized to issue pass to the herdsmen.”

Onwubuya, who testified before the commission on the April 25, 2016 attack by suspected herdsmen on the Nimbo community which claimed many lives with properties worth millions of naira destroyed, also told the commission that often the herdsmen would realize that they had paid to the wrong people because the people that issued pass to them were not authorized to do so.

He recalled that he had earlier given information to the security men about the impending attack three days before the killings, stressing that he informed them that about 500 assailants were camped at a place called Ameke and that they would attack Nimbo. “I made information available to the Governor, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the then Commissioner of Police, Nwodibo Ekechukwu, and the Area Commander for Nsukka and the DPO. Every bit of information I got, I released it on good time. I gave them information three days before the attack, and how they treated the information is left to the security men.”

He further explained: “We knew they were coming and we knew where they were coming from and we knew where they were camped and we knew they would attack us.”

He said that from the information “we gave to the police, I believe they can even sort out this matter without catching those they arrested. There are other alternatives to get at those who masterminded the attack. I believe that all of them knew what was happening because before the attack everybody including the herdsmen and their cows left the area.

Asked his opinion on how solve the problem, Onwubuya told the panel that as an official of the government, he would be neutral in the matter even while making sure that both the herdsmen and their hosts co-existed peacefully. “All complaints come to me; complaints from the herdsmen. All I’m doing is to ensure a peaceful co-existence between the two parties.”

Are traditional rulers permitted to issue pass? And even such thing as pass is given does it also cover the destruction of other people hard earned sweat. Do they understand what it takes to clear and grow a farmland? And I don't think they do. its high time our herds men adopt the raising of their cows in ranches as it is practice in other country. Technology advance daily its high time our traditional ways of life is transformed. Imagine if we are still in the Nokia 3310 era, all what we would have missed.

What is bad is bad!

I hope Enugu State government will do the right by fishing out those that collected money illegally from the herdsmen, the security operatives that was informed before hand and did nothing and always the herdsmen responsible for the attack. They should all be made to face the music if found guilty.

It is a damn shame. Got tired of mopping saliva off my mentions today because of them. I think they have this foolish idea an e-mob action on me would do the magic but they have no idea all that only goes to fortify me!

Let them keep the hate coming. Shey Joe Igbokwe has told them to their faces their misplaced hate won't take them anywhere, hating on everyone and everything not on the same page with them, including their blood brothers.

I wonder what an autocratic system totally apathetic to dissension they plan to run in that imaginary country of theirs- because one is as good as dead if they dare to hold a contrary opinion to dilector's.

The other day, one deviated completely off the topic under consideration and simply wrote "Aisha Buhari is a prostittute", and then wrote "cc Omenka", thinking that "hurts me". Today, there's a thread showing food items donated by the same Aisha being distributed to Abians! The "prostitute" was sharing the spoils of her "prostitution" to their mothers and fathers!

If this behaviour of theirs isn't MADNESS, then I don't know what is.

No wonder they were kicking vehemently against the Grazing Bill. So they have been collecting Grazing Fee ahead of time and if the Bill is passed, it will start going to FG.

See the sense of the relatives of Benjamin Netanyahu residing in Africa.

some people are trying to justify fulani
killings. but no problem.
Let fulani warriors set the whole country on fire and kill all the natives they graze on their land .

We are at least now finally getting some insight into the other side of the story; much as the Fulani have been maligned as wanton killers, it should be equally obvious that they wouldn't just wake and start killing ppl without a reason; part of that reason as we can see is that the Igbos have been scamming them, collecting money for grazing or selling them land and later renegading or collecting same under false pretext.

There was even a thread about similar happening where some youths in Amalla LG, Enugu allegedly sold land to the Fulani for as much as 4 million Naira, causing some members of the community to disagree and attempting to chase them away but only for the Fulani to refuse to budge until being refunded their money with interest.
https://www.nairaland.com/3079874/enugu-amalla-people-sold-land

We also have heard elsewhere that part of the reason for the Enugu attack was that the Igbos were killing and burying them secretly, which came to light after the Fulani discovered bodies of their ppl buried upside down and disembowelled in shallow graves - as culturally vengeful ppl, the Fulani therefore felt obliged to retaliate and the rest is now history.

It is a pity that we have poor and often biased journalism were the public are misinformed through lopsided media reporting.
We can see how some members of the Igbo host communities were taking advantage of the herdsmen, who in turn after being scammed feel sufficiently provoked to take retaliatory action - and we all know how the Igbos are experts at playing the victims card.

Stories to these clashes are often not one sided, there is always the other side, and if examined carefully sometimes you may even find the herdsmen are the actual victims.

The bolded is the only sensible goal. Neither the Herdsmen nor the locals will disappear into thin air, and level headed people must find life saving solutions to the herdmen/farmer problem.

These so-called royal fathers who collect hard earned money from the herdsmen, then turn around and prevent them from grazing as agreed to, should not be surprised that the herdsmen respond with violence. Shame on the royal fathers.
