Naira Vs Nairas - Have We Used This Word Correctly? by lordtriplee(m): 11:41am On Jul 14, 2016
One of my colleagues was writing something this morning in the office and she wrote 1000 Naira - we got into a small argument on grammar.

When should we use Naira or Nairas?

If you go through a thousand articles and book written by Nigerians; where the word Naira was used or should be used, you may not find the word Nairas.

Is Nairas correct or not?

When should I use Naira or Nairas?

My 2 cents:

When to use Naira in a sentence (correct usage)

This is a 100-naira Pen.
I bought a 20 Billion-naira house.

When to use nairas in a sentence (correct usage)

I paid 100 nairas for that pen.
We lost over 20 trillion nairas to corruption under FDF.

Or are we saying there is no plural form of the word "naira"?

Language specialists in the house, lets hear your comments.

African languages cannot be inflected for number. The Naira is not an English word and cannot be inflected for number. Hence we only say 1 trillion Naira and not trillion Nairas

If I may ask, Naira is what Nigerian language?

It is like saying the word "Nigeria" is a word in an African language, therefore it can't be inflected.

No?

Begs the question:

Based on what rule of grammar? Usually, most countries have a legislation that states the plural form of the currency like in Europe (even though they have contradicted severally).

Please, tell me more. Your answer is not explanatory enough.
