The point is if the young lad leaves Nigeria how will others after him learn?  If everyone leaves how will Nigeria ever change?

That mentality of looking down on 'made in nigeria' would have to improve first before aything can be done period.

It is not a mentality. People have come to learn over time that made in Nigeria is not always worth the money paid for it. Why do you label it a mentality when time and time again, it has been discovered that our local enterpreneurs are more interested in the making of money than they are in the making of quality products and creating a good business? Must a Nigerian, out of blind love for Nigeria or the MADE IN NIGERIA logo then have to settle for low quality when he/she knows that he can equally get better quality for a decent price elsewhere?
Re: Boy, 16, Invents Chain Car, Storms New Yam Fiesta by sjeezy8: 11:10pm On Sep 16, 2009
Nigerians partipate in trade and import goods to be sold rather than manufacture quality goods in Nigeria. Which is why nigeria is yet to become industrialized.
The lad can be the first to change this.

lf the lad doesn't stay fine others will do it and make billions while creating new jobs, progressing Nigeria.

I do not believe all are substandard or lacking in quality. Some are actually good and i can testify to this from experience. The thing is because of some experiences one might have had on a low quality item coupled with lack of belief in ourselves general nigerian issue by the way anytime we hear 'made in nigeria' the doubt mode in us sets in.

And of course it is not as if Government encourages these kind of poeple with a good working enviroment to enhance theri work and in the process quality which is why i still maintain that if the chap has the chance he should go to a place where he will find a more conducive enviroment to live his dreams instead of being 'patriotic' and watch his gift, talent or work waste in nigeria.

there are some things people really do not have reason not to buy made in nigeria. but people would rather buy imported toilet roll, tooth pick, and other basic stuff. sometimes our not wanting to buy "ABA MADE" help kill away these small industries.

False.Name one industrialized country that has unstable or almost non existent power supply.Do you know what places like nnewi.aba, kano and lagos would be like with uninterruupted power supply? i do not even want to talk about policies.

i mean aren't Nigerian tired of foreigners making money in Nigeria?

Im telling you people, once the chinese start demanding increase pay for their labor, Foreign companies will come to Nigeria and start their manufacturing companies. Many people talk about Nigeria being a next hot spot

of course but the power supply will soon be solved in major cities where companies will invest, the government has no choice or the foreign investors who keep the Nigerian politicians belle full will withdraw

Its all a matter of time.

You think nigerians are generally patriotic enough to care wether foriegners are making money in nigeria when they are also making money? In fact it is the open secret that nigerians 'worship' these foreigners.

I laugh in owerri at the second highlighted part. You talk with optimism rather than reality. With current policy of 'generate electricity and supply to national grid for distribution' seriously

Have you ever wondered why Lagos state has never really generated their own electricity?

Poor lad! His dream will go like those of others before him. In Nigeria, he has to beat the almighty QUOTA SYSTEM to make his dream a reality.
While I was exactly at the same JSS3, I drew up and was determined to build a helicopter. I had only finished my first level Physics but I was puzzled by how a helicopter hung on one spot and spun around in the air. I couldn't sleep for days figuring out how a helicopter does that! My dream died once I realized I couldn't even access a good physics science lab.

Those types of inventions only happened in one African country -BIAFRA!

We talk of Nigerians as if they are people who have money to buy expensive foreign made stuff when locally made items are of equal or better quality. I disagree. We are speaking of people who mostly live on less than 2 dollars a day here. Not people who have access to money from the nose and ass. You speak of Toilet roll made in Nigeria. What is the quality? Is it as good as some of the foreign imported stuff? How cheap is it? Is it priced in such a way that for each toilet roll sold, the maker pockets at least 50% profit? These things matter.

I think I mentioned on another thread on how McDonalds makes about 3 cents for each burger sold. Many of the Made in Nigeria products I have seen over in Nigeria, and even here in America and significantly overpriced. In many of the African stores here, there are things I would gladly pay for that are made in Nigeria but they just are ridiculously overpriced, and so I rather drive to the nearest Wal-Mart to pay $10 less. Why in the world would I want to buy Ovaltine for $25 bucks when I can buy Nesquick for about $5. Why?

I am not sure if Nigerians have gotten to the point where they check what country an item is made, if it appears to be of high quality, before they purchase it, but I think the bulk of the blame lies in the fact that our manufacturers do not do a good job making sure their products not only get to the market but that they retain control on how it is sold. If we had a more organized system, maybe that would help but we have failed to develop that over the years and that is why, in my opinion, we have what we have today.

When I say powerful people, I don't mean pig's, I mean powerful mind's, e.g Chinua Achebe, The Nigerian guy that designed cars for General motors (Jaliani, or something like that), and countless other people, those are the powerful people.

Look at people who were not appreciated in their country like Chimamanda Adichie, but later went on to win an Orange prize for fiction, or the man that invented the Z600 car, but was not listened to, or TINAPA that was stifled by the north, the list goes on. . . .

Re: Boy, 16, Invents Chain Car, Storms New Yam Fiesta by mustafar1: 3:37am On Sep 17, 2009
why would you compare ovaltine shipped half way across the world to an african store(monopolist) in the middle of mormon country utah to nesquick u bought at ur local super walmart.

i know what i say when i say nigerians would rather buy imported than buy made in nigeria even with the same quality. its the same reason, someone would get told an iphone costs an equivalent of $1000 in the nigerian market and would want it, get to the store and be told it is $800. he would walk out thinking it must be fake for it to cost $800 instead of $1000.

My point is I get the same treatment here from African businesses. It is not that these items need to be marked up so high. In fact, it turns out that if you tried to shop around the same ovaltine would cost about 10 less in the next African store.

But that has nothing to do with “made in Nigeria” but the fact that from experience, many have learnt to be cautious of quality and authenticity of items that are offered them cheap. Even I know that.

I can now see where your coming from, and what background you have, can you name me the powerful bankers in America, just one? Do you not know that the most powerful people in this world are behind the scenes? Just because you don't see certain people throwing wild parties and/or being escorted by the whole Nigerian police force, does not mean someone is not powerful. You are almost like the voice of corruption in Nigeria right now because that is how real powerful minds leave Nigeria because people will say the same thing you said and ignore somebody with ideas.
