haffaze777: thank you my bro, that is what i quickly want to tell him that Gbedu is a type of big drum used for big festival in Yoruba land and mostly the 'OMO' tree is used in carving the drum, the yoruba proverb goes- 'opo igi ni nbe nigbo ki a to fi igi OMO gbe Gbedu' translated there are lots of tree in the forest, but only the Omo tree can be used to carve Gbedu drums. Problem is that there are lots of youngsters on internet platforms that make all manners of statements without really knowing much, it makes people like me to want to keep off and rather watch. 5 Likes |

The funniest part of it all, is that these days most Nigerians use 20-25% Yoruba words in their everyday pidgin and language usage without even knowing it. 4 Likes |

Horllamideh: With the special position Lagos has in Nigeria, it is not uncommon to find non-Yorubas who were born in or have lived in Lagos who speak Yoruba. The guy you met must have definitely lived in Yoruba land before moving back to the East. However, it is rare to find an Igbo person born and bred in Igboland who 'speaks Yoruba'. Likewise meeting someone in Yoruba land who speaks fluent Igbo, there is a strong chance the person was born or spent some of their years in Igboland. 3 Likes 1 Share |

bigfrancis21: Lagos is actually a linguistically weak Yoruba city. A good proportion of Yorubas in Lagos themselves can't speak the language well like a true native should. All other Yoruba settlements however are repping 100%, including those all around Lagos. There are also Igbos in the North, but I think Yoruba as a whole manifests itself more in Nigerian popular culture than any other lingo. I think this is because Yorubas share both conservative linguistic/cultural tendencies and western wider/global outlook, which gives them the ability to (1) retain their language and keep it virile (2) propagate it by infusing it into progressive western motivated culture. 10 Likes |

I remembered during my national service, one of my housemates was arguing with me that 'oga' is an Ibo word! It took a long time to lecture her that it was originated purely from Yoruba. Yoruba is a very interesting language indeed. Though we do not have that power to choose where we belong but I love being a Yoruba. 3 Likes |
