How Else Can A Pupil Learn To Read? by fromnigeria(m): 6:49pm On Aug 15, 2016 |
Nairaland Educationist et al, please i do need your advice and views at this point. I have a child of 8years, who unfortunately for reasons i can not tell, can not read because of inability to pronounce words. My effort for the past 3 months have yielded some good result but he is not yet where he should be as per reading. What else can i do? Many thanks for your input. |

Is he in school? At what age did he start schooling, what about his classmates, can they also read? If yes what is his relationship with his peers? How well does he perform in vocational subjects? Is he displaying characteristics of an autistic child? |

fromnigeria:At 8 doesn't mean he is 50. Constant doing of what you feel is good to him reveal the true potential in him. Take the story of Ben carson mum as an inspiration 1 Like |

sinaj:Infact he doesn't do so well in other subject because of his inability to read. I was told the major cause of this was that as a child (of talking age) speaking was difficult, so he couldn't start learning spellings and reading early enough. This is the bane did i add that he plays too much? |

fromnigeria:who does he play with, his peers? If yes how does he communicate with them. Btw does he stammer? |
Re: How Else Can A Pupil Learn To Read? by fromnigeria(m): 9:39pm On Aug 15, 2016 |
sinaj:Yea, he does when the words can't come easily, he tries to force them out and so stammers often especially when so angry. |

Your son could be dyslexic as that affects the way they see words on paper causing everything to become jumbled up. He can be tested for this. However, I would focus on his communication and speech. Use flash cards with simple words and pictures with him. Work with him on sounding out the phonetic alphabets, don't worry if it comes out wrong, keep repeating the right pronounciation and with time, he will get it. Praise all his efforts, don't get angry when he struggles. What is he good at or interested in? If it is something like football for instance, get him books with words and pictures about the game. Use his interests to build on his deficits. You are going to have to think out of the box. 1 Like |

shaybebaby:Thanks alot. Actually he is very good at mathematics and in basic 3. Also he sounds and sings vowels and consonants perfectly. The only challenge is Just the pronunciation. Nevertheless, thanks so much for making out time. |

fromnigeria:Then you have to keep modelling the right pronunciation. When he says it wrong, don't say "no" it's wrong. That might discourage him. Instead acknowledge what he is saying but you pronounce it the right way. Keep up with this and you will see some Improvements. He may also benefit from speech therapy. Have him checked for speech apraxia. Encourage the singing, that is brilliant that he loves it. But also it exercises the muscles we need for speech. You are welcome , I have a son with delayed speech but he is making good progress. Keep doing what you are doing, you seem like a brilliant parent. Don't worry too much, relax even as you try to help and try to make it as fun as possible. Remember, children learn best through play. 2 Likes |
