It is without doubt that when it comes to agriculture The Federal Republic of Nigeria is blessed with:
 A large, willing, capable and productive Human resource base.
 The abundance of fertile and arable land.
 A wide variety of agricultural crops suitable for local and international consumption.
The basis of the Nigerian Agricultural sector has always been the local individual farmer, using labour intensive methods and tools (usually hoes or animal driven ploughs) to prepare land for planting and cultivation of food crops.
In most parts of Nigeria, there is only one cultivating season in a year, and this season known as the rainy season lasts for between four to six months depending on the location within Nigeria. This means the farmers have to make the most of this season in producing food crops for sale and survival till the next season.
The high cost of buying, operating and maintaining conventional tractors and their accessories is the reason why fully mechanised farming methods have not been and will not be successful (in the mid-term future) in food production in Nigeria.
Due to the high cost of operating large scale mechanical cultivating means and the lack of adequate subsidies, large scale farming in Nigeria (even though practiced) will never be able to deliver the full potential of food production with respect to the amount of arable land available in Nigeria.
The end result is the limitation and gross under-utilisation of the human resource potential, reduced amount of land cultivated per season and the major reason why only one type of crop can be planted per framer in any given planting season. This is why the quantity of Nigerian food production is far below the actual potential that can be realised.
The abundance of human potential coupled with the large availability of land and wide variety of crops that can be cultivated in Nigeria demands a low cost solution that will dramatically increase the amount of land cultivated by the local individual farmer. This solution must at the same time also provide for mass employment, reduced labour intensity and provide the possibility of two crop cultivations per rainy season.
Habgito Nigeria Limited has identified such a low cost solution. This low cost solution which provides; minimal capital investment and assistance per farmer, will simultaneously solve all these problems and dramatically increase the annual food production and food security of Nigeria.
This solution is the Mechanical Tiller (Tractor Tiller) which is a rotary powered hoe that allows for faster, easier and less strenuous preparation of soil for planting preparation than conventional manual hoe or cow pulled plough methods.

The Tiller (Tractor Tiller)
Based on a small petrol or diesel motor cycle sized engine, the Tiller greatly reduces the time and effort required in cultivating land for planting. This allows the farmer to cultivate and plant a larger acreage at a lower cost, reducing time, effort and at the same time provide the possibility of two or more crop cultivations per season.

Comparisons between the Tiller and the conventional tractor performances are given below:
a. Cost Comparison
For equivalent cost of one conventional Tractor about seventy five Tillers, complete with ploughing accessories can be bought.
b. Performance Comparison
One Tiller operated by one person will plough and prepare for planting 3,000 sq. m of land/day.
One Tractor operated by one person will plough and prepare for planting 34,000 sq. m of land/day.
Seventy Five Tillers operated by Seventy Five people will plough and prepare (75 x 3,000 sq. m) 255,000 sq. m of land/day.
c. Operating Requirements (fuel)
The operating fuel (diesel) requirement of a tractor is approximately 200 litres/day.
This is equal to an efficiency of 170 sq. m/litre of diesel.
The Operating fuel (petrol) of a Tiller is approximately 10 litres/day.
This is equal to 300 sq. m/litre of petrol.
The operating fuel requirement of Seventy Five Tillers to cultivate 225,000 sq. m of land is 750 litres.
d. Employment Generation
Compared to a Tractor’s cost of acquisition the equivalent cost of one tractor will buy about Seventy Five Tillers.
This means that by buying Tillers instead of Tractors, employment for Hundreds of people will be generated instead of for just a few.
e. Repairs and Maintenance
The cost of maintenance and repairs of a Tiller is the same as that of a motorcycle i.e. very simple does not require any special skills or tools, the spare parts are cheap and as such the down time is very short. However the cost of maintenance, repairs and spare parts of a Tractor are expensive and, usually complex, labour intensive with relatively long downtimes.

The facts and figures above clearly show that on a per capita basis; in terms of acquisition costs, operating costs, operating efficiency, productivity and employment generation, purchasing Tillers instead of tractors will be more beneficial to agriculture development and this is the best option for improving agricultural productivity in Nigeria.
An extract from the National Bank for Rural and Agricultural Development India (NARDA, n.d, pp 1 -3) where Tillers successfully used and are the choice for farming states the additional Tiller advantages:
- Tillers are ideally suited for mechanizing small farm holdings which account for over 80 % of the farm holdings of the country.
- Tillers are more effective in the areas having a high concentration of small and marginal farmers and/or highly fragmented holdings.
- Cost wise the Tiller should be an obvious choice of smaller farmers, if they are intending to have a mechanical power source for farm operation.
- The maintenance and operation costs of a Tiller is easy and cheap compared to tractors.
- Learning to operate a Tiller is much easier as compared to learning to operate a tractor and a Tiller does not require a driving license.
- Tiller farmers tend to have more diversified cropping patterns. After acquiring the Tiller they produce more paying crops and it also allows farmers to adopt High Yielding Varieties (HYV) This significantly reduces the seasonal fallows and thereby substantially increases their cropping intensity, production, employment and income.
- The light weight of the Tiller is a favourable factor for working in wet as well as dry land conditions. It creates the least disturbance of soil structure, can cross over the bunds separating the small holdings, can climb steep hill slopes, conveniently operate in bench terraces and can manoeuvre the narrow pathways of rural areas.
- The Tillers are a cost effective source of farm power as the Tiller owners are able to recover even the fixed cost and earn handsome margin from custom hiring unlike the tractor owners, who are not able to recover the fixed costs out of the custom hiring charges.
- Tillers are preferred by small farmers and they provide opportunities for self-employment in rural areas. Even marginal farmers and landless labourers effectively and profitably use the Tiller for self-employment.
- The small and marginal farmers form major clientele for custom hiring of Tillers. In highly fragmented and small holdings, the Tiller is preferred for arduous farm operations and preparatory tillage.
- It would be evident from table 1 (above) on the operational capabilities of the Tiller it is an efficacious machine. One of the points of advantage of the Tiller is that the Tiller engine can run with maximum efficiency since they are small engines between 6 to 12 hp.
- The main advantage of using Tillers is that they can be moved easily on their wheels from one place to another and do not require additional transportation arrangements. Besides the Tiller occupies very little space to move about and can negotiate narrow village and farm roads with ease.
- Due to their compact size, Tillers do not require any significant storage space.
- Tillers reduce the drudgery of long walking in the field during operations as compared to preparatory operations using animals. For example where ploughing by cows and country plough may take 20 - 25 kms of walking to complete 4,046 sq. m, the Tiller may take 3 - 4 kms of walking to complete the same area.
- Tillers demand less body effort as compared to operation by animals. The animal implements require the hand and body pressure to achieve depth and alignment of the implement in use, whereas Tillers are self-propelled and guided. This reduces human drudgery to a great extent.
- The comparative higher output of operation by the Tillers as compared to animals reduces the operational time and achieves timeliness in operation.
- Today, in most developing countries the Tiller appears to be replacing the animal power more effectively and helps in increasing demand for human labour.
- When not in use Tillers do not incur any maintenance costs unlike animals which need constant feeding, watering and medical care even when not in use i.e. every day of the year.
- With so many advantages of using Tillers for cultivating crops and their suitability to smaller holdings, it is undoubtedly an intermediate technology between animals and tractor farming. In the prevalent conditions of Nigerian Agriculture, where tractor prices are high and continuously on the rise, Nigerian farmers especially the small land holders should find an answer in the use of the Tiller.
- In conclusion, it proves that the level of incremental income from Tillers is high therefore Tillers are likely to improve the economic conditions of the smaller farmers who may choose to use them.
From the above comparisons and listed advantages of Tillers over tractors, manual and animal farming methods, the reasons why Nigerian small scale farmers should start using Tillers are very obvious.
It is also very important for the Federal, State and Local Governments, Agricultural Ministries and organisations to commence the introduction of Tillers into the Nigerian Agricultural economy.

Tillers are powerful earth-churning machines. They break up, mulch, and aerate the soil with deep-cutting blades that extend deep into the ground.
Thus they provide more control over how the land is ploughed, resulting in straighter and more stable (as in less likely to crumble) organised ridges for planting.
