Re: What's The Difference Among These Two Courses? by omogidi234(m): 4:52pm On Aug 18, 2016
The former is basically studies of English as a language while the latter is added with literature. That is my own short explanation. Both are okay.
Re: What's The Difference Among These Two Courses? by Nobody: 4:56pm On Aug 18, 2016
I think its there in the name, one has a tinge of literature attached to it like a minor while the other doesn't. I would like to get more elaboration though

OP, when comparing two things, use the preposition "between". When comparing more than two things you use "among".

The difference is your grammatical blunder. Among is totally wrong in this context.

Alright Let me explicate, elucidate and delineate on the differences between English Language as a major and English and Literary study on the other hand!
First of all I will like you to take cognizance of the fact that the former is a single major whereas the later is a double major course! Which simply means a course that focus on one specific area and a course that focus on two different But related areas respectively!
I hope that helped!

Don't be offended it's d Patrick disease

As a postgraduate student and scholar in English with specialisation in Literary Studies, I'll tell you that there is no difference between both, especially at the undergraduate level. They are just mere appellations for the same thing. Schools can use any word/phrase to refer to the department but they offer the exact same thing. For instance, in my undergraduate school, it was called department of English and Literary Studies. In my current school, it is simply department of English. Some schools call it department of English language, others call it department of languages and literature or department of English language and literature.
It should be noted, however, that the department of English houses two broad & almost distinct fields: English language and literature. English language maybe offered separately from literature in some schools (mostly foreign) with a few literature courses (one can't divorce literature from language). The same applies to literary studies. However, in Nigeria, they are always merged (I stand to be corrected). What obtains in most schools, like my alma mater, is that students specialise in either language or literature in their final year and take specialised courses.
However, at the postgraduate level, these two fields are very very different and have nothing in common apart from the department housing them. PG students in language or literature do not share courses apart from Stylistics (which is a language based form of literary criticism and analysis) and not every school offers this as a course or makes it mandatory.

Career opportunities for this field abound. Some of them include:
-Writer
-Editor
-Teacher
-Translator
-Diplomat
-Administrator
-Politician
-Lecturer
-Researcher
-Librarian
-Customer Care Representative
-Marketer
-Public Relations Officer
-Staff writer
-Journalist
-etc

I hope the point has been made.

you can actually divorce literature without taking language..its just that in this part of the world ,the rarely do so.note ..In Unilag...at the Department of English, you both do the same course till 300 level, when you take specialises courses. All in all, i prefer linguistics to a English language...nice summation though,God bless you

Like Frathermarty explained, they are very similar at the undergraduate level. I specialised in English and literary studies. In my school, we were asked to go specific in 300 level, that means going grammar or literature which wasn't so different from what we've been doing from 100 level. If you're literature oriented it means moving a bit away from Syntax, Discourse Analysis, Stylistic, Phonetics etc to Oral literature, Intro to Poetry, Creative Writing etc Either way you will still do some of the core courses either as a grammar or literature student. My dept. isn't even called the English dept. they call it Modern European Languages dept. cos of French and formerly Russian or German languages that were taught.

Thanks.
In your old comment you said in Unilag one gets to specialise in either language or linguistics as you progress in the course.
My 2nd question: Is there a third specialty from a corely communications angle like English language in media, English language in presentation, and in business?
