9. Toothbrush/Paste.

Methods of keeping the teeth clean of detritus have been around for a while, but the Egyptians invented the first recorded toothpaste specifically created and reported to help oral health. Some Egyptian tombs were even found with toothbrushes within, which consisted of a twig frayed on one end. Found in papyrus documents, the recipe for an Egyptian-style toothpaste is a drachma (1/100 ofan ounce) of rock salt, two drachmas ofmint, a drachma of dried iris flower, and some pepper. A dentist called Heinz Neuman gave this recipe a shot and said that while it made his gums bleed, his mouth definitely felt cleaner afterward.

What about our own elders that have been chewing kpako from the days of dinosaurs? undecided

10. Glass.

While glass can be found naturally formed around the world, the first proof that people were creating and using glass in crafts can be found back in 3500 BC, in both the Egyptian and the Mesopotamian civilizations, mainly in the form ofsmall glass beads. The Egyptians would go on to discover an efficient way of making vases, by plunging compacted sand molds into molten glass and rolling the result onto a cooled slab. The earliest Egyptian vases found were dedicated to PharaohThoutmosis III, dating to around 1500 BC.

Ancient Egyptians also managed to master the art of making red glass, which was very hard to do due to the glass having to be fired in an environment without oxygen. Both the Egyptians and the Mesopotamians would spread their methods through trade and conquer, inspiring the Romans to take up the craft.

The major problem about oral method of keeping history is that fact and figures could be changed to favour a particular people.

They must have placed a priority on record keeping. This is one of the reasons why Africa's history is lost. Our ancestors depended on the use of the oral method of history keeping.

The gap in our history is responsible for the low standard we give to ourselves and our heritage.

11. Time/Calendar.

Our 365 day calendar probably has its origins in ancient Egypt. The Egyptians figured out a 360 day calendar based on the various religious festivals and feasts throughout the year. They also split the year into 12 months. Ancient Egypt already had ways to measure time by the light from morning, afternoon, and night. Sundials were built to measure time, using the shadow from the angle of the sun's light to mark the time.

12. King Crown.

It is also believed that wearing of Royal crowns originated from Egypt. A Pharaoh never let his hair be seen he would always wear a crown or a headdress called a nemes (the striped cloth headdress made famous by Tutankhamen’s golden mask).

13. Makeup.

Both Egyptian men and women wore makeup, eyepaint was usually green (made from copper) or black (made from lead). The Egyptians believed that the makeup had healing power. Originally the makeup was used as a protection from the sun rather than for adornment.

14. Accessories.

Ancient Egypt is credited with the inventions of many accessories. Scissors, combs, toothbrushes and toothpaste, plus the lock and key, the weaving loom, drums, and the first oil lamps.

15. Games.

Ancient Egyptians also loved entertainment. Board games with pieces and dice were played, and drama possibly showed up in the Egyptians' daily life. The world's first fairytale is rumoured to have been created by the ancient Egyptians.

Pyramid Facts.

The temperature inside the Great Pyramid equals the average temperature of the Earth (68F). The famous Great Pyramid at Giza was built as a burial place for King Khufu (2589-2566 B.C.) and took more than 20 years to build. It is built from over two million blocks of limestone, each one weighing as much as two and a half elephants. It stands about 460 feet (149 m) high taller than the Statue of Liberty. The base of the Great Pyramid takes up almost as much space as five football fields.

14. Ancient Egyptians kept such good flood records on the Nile that scientists today use their data to better understand rainfall patterns.

For the ancient Egyptians, the Nile was mysterious. Unlike most other rivers, it flows south to north, it floods in the summer, and no one knew where the water came from. Explorers discovered the source of the Nile in East Africa just 150 years ago.

The world's longest river, running through nine countries,135 miles (6,670 km).

15. The planets.

Egyptians knew the existence of Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Mars, and Jupiter. They had names for them such as Sebequ,a god associated with Set , (Mercury), “god of the morning” (Venus), “bull of the sky” (Saturn), “Horus the red” or “Horus of the horizon” (Mars), and “Horus who limits the Two Lands” (Jupiter).

Ramses II was publicly unwrapped in June 1886 in just 15 minutes. His body became contaminated by fungi and bacteria, which literally ate him little by little. In 1975, scientists used gamma rays to sterilize his body. He is now stored in an antibacterial case.

16. Religion.

Ancient Egyptians believed in more than 2,000 deities.

Egyptians worshipped different Gods so that life could be kept in balance. Each God had different “responsibilities”. The list of deities includes hawk-headed Sun God Ra, Goddess of moisture Tefnut, Anubis the god of embalming and the dead, and many more.

The Ancient Egyptians had questions about the afterlife, what happens when you die, and if gods existed. So they invented a religion that they strongly believed in and followed through in their beliefs and worshiped their gods, just like we do today. If they wouldn't have created these religions we would have different beliefs today.

Many Abrahamic religions, especially the Judaic religions, Islam/Christianity got most of their stories from Egyptian myth.

It is unfortunate that humans still subscribe to such primitive assumptions and premises.

Afterlife.

The ancient Egyptians believed in an afterlife. They called this place the land of the Two Fields. Just dying would not get to you the land of the Two Fields. You had to earn a place in the god Ra’s boat. To get on board Ra’s boat, your heart had to be light. To keepyour heart light, the ancient Egyptians believed you had to spend a lifetime doing good deeds and behaving well.

Crime was very low in ancient Egypt because everyone wanted to get on board Ra’s boat and travel to the land of the Two Fields to enjoy their afterlife.

*. Picture: Ancient Egyptian gods weighing the heart of a person to judge if he will go to the afterlife. There were a couple of other things you had to do before you couldspend forever in the afterlife.

1. First, you had to pass the test of heart where your heart was weighed on a scale with a feather. If your heart was lighter than the feather, you got onto Ra’s boat.

2. But you also had to have your name written down somewhere.

3. And you had to have a preserved (in one piece and in good condition) body.

Some aspects of our modern life found their start in Egypt.
