My name is Kehinde and this is my story. People say, “Life is beautiful and marriage is blissful.” But you never know until you get yourself into one. Many people blame circumstances for their compounded problems, most people try to look for who to blame: An ignoramus juncture of desperation. Not knowing that they themselves made the decisions that led them into the very nest that troubles them.

I remember 4 years ago, I was at my prime… Well shaped with a flat tummy, hips and a well rounded butt, I was an eye candy. My body was my treasure, a mentality that stuck with me since my early teens. I guarded my body with reckless abandon, knowing how beautiful and adorable I looked, I wanted to give it to the very man that walked the aisle with me.

I was admired by a lot of guys who respected my discipline and ethics. Not that I was a very spiritual person, but a principled person with perfectionist tendencies. I pride myself with an outstanding academic performance, charming beauty and adherence to keeping my virginity till my wedding night. Often times, I ridiculed ladies who can’t refrain themselves from pulling down their panties for guys. I developed an ego and I felt the need to inspire ladies on the importance and significance of keeping themselves, focusing on the ultimate goal of being a student on campus. I made some friends and enemies but most importantly, I made my point.

On campus, I turned down numerous relationship offers from guys of all kinds. Students, Lecturers, University staff… Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t a loner, I had lots of male friends but I knew when to draw the line. Even the so called biggest boys on campus failed on their mission to claim my booty. I remember Ayo, who was the chief of one of the clubs on campus. He was tall, dark, handsome, well built and was loaded with lots of cash. He drove a BMW as a student and also had a powered bike. Most girls called him, “Irresistible!!” But to me, he was just some pervert trying to dive between my legs.

I remember his words to me. “Kenny, no chic has ever said no to me before. You must be a lesbian.”
Also Mr Adebabyo, the most handsome lecturer on campus and a bachelor in his early 30’s. He chased me for over 2 years but my answer was still “NO!!”

I knew what I wanted. I wanted a God fearing young man with average looks, who has a white collar job and some track record of achievements. It wasn’t too much to ask for, was it? So I knew the students who tried to woo me, the lecturers and all, fell out of the box. But the good thing was, I was never rude or cocky in telling them “NO!!” I just said it with a subtle smile and discarded them eventually.

After my Bsc and during my youth service, I was just one step away towards finding my man or should I say, “Letting him find me”. I finished with a first class and I felt more than fulfilled but not just yet. My goals were simple. Firstly finish with a first class and get a good job, secondly marry my first love as a virgin, thirdly have 2 kids and lastly, love my family with my life.

During the orientation camp, something unexpected happened. I bumped into my good old friend of many years, his name was Supo. Supo and I were classmates in primary school. He was my best friend back then. I remember then he always shared whatever he had in his lunch box with me. We even became family friends because of our friendship. I was so delighted to see him again and what tripped me most was that he was the one who recognised me.

He came to me and said. “Kehinde Adewale.” As I turned, behold everything just clicked. He appeared good looking, about 6 feet tall but still had that innocent face. I hugged him with all my strength and we remained that way for about a minute.

Our friendship took a new bound, he was more like a brother than a friend: Always watching over me like a hawk and chasing would be toasters away from my reach such that everyone began to think we were dating. I started to discover how refined and pleasant he was, a complete gentleman with a remarkable character.

At the end of our service year, he came to me and said. “Kenny…Erm, there’s something I would like you to know. Well, it’s more like the way I feel about us.” He then paused.
I then said. “Supo, I am all ears.”
He then said. “I love you Kenny, I have loved for a very long time. I had prayed in the past to cross your path again and when I saw you about a year ago here, I knew God had answered my prayers.”
I felt as if I was hit by a meteorite. Supo was a wonderful guy but I didn’t love him… I cared for him like a brother.
I then said to him. “Oh Supo, I have never met a guy as wonderful as you and I have never felt so free and close with any guy….”
He then said. “Thats the same way I feel Kenny. We are compatible and we connect easily. What more can we ask for than that?”
I then said. “I can’t afford to loose our friendship Supo.”
He said. “Thats why I am proposing we build it Kenny.”
I said. “But Supo….”
He said. “But what?”
I took a deep breath and said. “I don’t feel the same way you feel about me. I am sorry Supo, I don’t see us as lovers. I love you as a brother.”

He then knelt down with tears in his eyes saying. “I understand how you feel about us. You need to know that I will do anything to make you happy even if it’s to sacrifice my feelings. But I am offering you my heart, my life forever to love you till I draw my last breath. Please Kenny.”

Looking at him on his knees terrified me. The tears in his eyes began to build up, dripping down his right cheek. I quickly turned around, backing him and I began to weep. He was a wonderful guy but I had my standards. But to see him in tears moved me. Compassion filled my heart and at that point, I was willing to compromise my stand.
I then said to him. “Supo, when do you think you will be ready to settle down?”
He got up, cleaned his face and said. “I think at least 2 years from now kenny.”
I then said. “You think? Supo, you know my condition at home. You know ever since my dad left years ago, and my mom married another man, home was never what it used to be for me. I can’t wait for 2 years in that house.”
He then said. “Okay 1 year Kenny, just give me 1 year. Please.”
Then I said. “Supo. This is what I will do. I am going to wait for you for 6 months. If I don’t see any economical change from your end, I will take it that you are not ready. Then I will move on.”

He then hugged me and said. “Oh thank you Kenny.”
I then said. “Don’t thank me yet, you are not even on probation.”

After the passing out parade of the youth service, I returned back home in Lagos. The next thing on my bucket list was to get my CV ready so I could apply for a good job. One sunny day, I headed for the closest business center just off the road from my house. On getting there, it was a little crowded so I had to wait for my turn.

While I was about to be attended to, I heard a guy saying. “Please I need some change can you guys help me out?” He was talking to the workers in the business center. They all ignored him.
He then said. “Please I am begging you it’s very important, I need to fix my car.”
One of the workers then said. “No change sir.”
I then got his attention and said. “How much change do you need?”
He then said. “N1000 change please….”
Luckily for him, I always keep cash of all denominations with me. So I helped him out and he was very happy.

As soon as I was done with my CV, I decided to head back home. I crossed the road and saw the same guy I had helped with change. He was standing beside his car while a vulcanizer was working on the tires.
He saw me and said. “Hey, you are the lady who helped me out? I just want to let you know how grateful I am.”
I then said. “It’s nothing, you are welcome.”
He then looked at my hand and noticed my file, he then said. “I believe you went to create your CV?”
I said. “Smart guess. Anyway, have a nice day, I have to go now.”
He then said. “Wait, please. I can help you get a job. Let me return the favor”
I paused for a while and said. “I appreciate your concern but I think you don’t have to go that far to pay back a mere kind gesture.”
He then said. “Listen erm.. My name is Lekan and you are…”
I said. “Kenny.”
He then said. “Kenny, it won’t cost you much to give me your CV. There’s a job opening in an advertising firm and they pay well. I understand your fears but you can be rest assured that I am only paying back a kind gesture.” As he smiled.
I reluctantly gave him my CV and then left.

The following day, a Sunday, in the evening. My phone rang, it was Lekan. he said. “Hello, this is Lekan, I believe I am on to Kenny?”
I said. “Yes, this is Kenny.”
He then said. “Good, I gave your CV to my very close friend in church. He’s going to call you tomorrow. Tell him you are my girlfriend.”
I said. “What!!”
He then said. “I am sorry that I had to lie but please try and trust me on this one.”
I then said. “I don’t know what to do, I still find this puzzling.”
He then said. “Just be optimistic, everything will be fine.”

The following morning around 8:30am, I got a call from a lady in the human resources department of Insight communications. She told me to come to the office at Ikeja GRA. I was shocked and got there as fast as I could . On getting there, the receptionist directed me to the HR department. I got there and was asked to sit down after which I was escorted to the director’s office.

He was a middle aged man and he said. “Kehinde, please sit down”
I sat down and my palms were sweating.
He then said. “Hope you and Lekan are doing fine?”
I then smiled and said. “Yes we are.”
He then said. “You need to be patient with him, he’s a good man with a good heart. So how are you?”
I said. “I am very fine sir.”
He said. “Because you are family, I am going to put you in a management position. The package is N170,000 monthly with medical insurance. I hope that’s okay?”
I smiled and said. “It’s the best thing happening to me right now.”
He then said. “Thats good. You can go get your employment letter from the HR department. And one more thing, tell Lekan I am inviting you guys for lunch after service on Sunday.”
I said. “Okay, I will sir. Thank you very much.”

It was like magic, everything falling in the right places. I was so thrilled when I got the employment letter. I then called Lekan and told him. He said.”I told you. Now we are even. You take care and God bless you.”

I got home feeling so excited and blessed, for my dreams were coming true before my eyes. Except one and that was my man. I then remembered what the director told me, the lunch on Sunday. I then called Lekan and told him about it. His response was. “What do you think?”
And I replied. “We have to go o, It wasn’t a request .”
Then he laughed and said. “Don’t worry, we will make it.....
