The playstation brand became a household name in 1994, with the release of ps1, and has since dominated and revolutionized the gaming industry.  Sony took a bold step when her plans to work with Nintendo to produce a powerful game console were shattered by Nintendo barely few days before the signatory between both parties. Sony went back to the drawing board and created a console that eventually opened the doors to current generation of gaming; it broke into the main stream 3 years after. The playstation one was in a league of it own, competing with the likes of Sega Saturn and Nintendo 64. The PS1 later sold over 105 million consoles life time, The PS1 used CD for playing games, the playstation one gave Sony an unflinching momentum after the loss of betamax video format to JVC’s VHS in 1980, which became the industry standard, Although The Compact Disc was developed by Sony and Philips, hence it’s usage in the ps1 made it more available to the mainstream.

In 1999, Sony once again trilled the world with the release of the ps1 successor, the playstation 2, the release of PS2,  saw the complaint of most developers  regarding the general architecture of the console and how hard it was to develop for, During the period Sony worked hard in improving the development kits of the PS2, sales were generally low, until it’s third year when it entered the main stream, Sony as a company never likes to look back, hence the inclusion of a DVD drive in PS2 and making it it’s gaming format made it triumph to greater heights. Sega later stopped the production of the all game hardware which later saw the death of the powerful Dreamcast, Sega then became a Software company; Microsoft also stopped supporting the xbox in its fourth year loosing Billions of dollars, same thing happened to Nintendo and its Gamecube. The overall success of the PS2 was due to massive influx of first, second and third party contents and games. The PS2 currently has close to 2000 games which appeals to different class of people. The ps2 in its  near 10th year is still being supported by Sony and developers and has sold about 140 million consoles thus becoming the best selling game console in history.

In 2005 Sony planned to release a much more powerful console, a console that would be a general Entertainment HUB, but it later missed the release window due to technical issues. The absence of the PS3 made the xbox360 the only next-gen console, with no competition and sold over 10.5 million consoles that year, in 2006 and 2007 the ps3 was released in North America, Japan and Europe respectively. Ken Kutarigi, (Father of Playstation) the then CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment made a derogatory comment that even if there were no games the PS3 would sell like hotcakes,  But the PS3 failed to meet the company’s expectation, which led to resignation of Ken Kutaragi and the take over by kaz haira. Under ken Kutaragi’s leadership, The PS3came in a economic recession with  a luxurious price of $600, which was $200 more expensive than it’s closest rival – xbox 360, and $350 more expensive than the wii. It had no games, two lunch titles were indefinitely suspended – The gateway 3 and Eight days. The PS3 was called a blu-ray player instead of a gamming console, The playstation network was no where near the experience you get from the Xbox live, Most multiplatform games were better on the Xbox 360, because developers all over complained about how hard and expensive it was to develop games on the ps3. The PS3 suffered lots of set backs, The world largest third party publisher- Activision Blizzard threatened to stop supporting the playstation brand, the major blow that led to the slow adoption of the PS3, was the high price, which was due to inclusion of Blu-ray and making it the gaming format for the ps3. However the inclusion of Blu-ray has paid off as games like Metal Gear solid 4, would have been impossible, MGS4 used up 48GB of the entire 50GB blu-ray disc. The PS3 might also have helped in winning the HD format war for Sony, so it is a win-win situation.

Under Kaz Haira Leadership, things began to turn around smoothly, Costs were gradually reduced, and a price cut to $400 made the PS3 a little bit affordable, at that time Sony lost $50 on every console sold. The reduced price of PS3, made it outsell the xbox360 every month, this lead to a desperate price cut by Microsoft to see the xbox360 selling at a very cheap price- $199. The ps3 was once again $200 more expensive than the xbox360. Despite the desperation, the PS3 still outsold the xbox360 worldwide year over year. Massive efforts were done by Sony to further reduce the price, few months ago, Sony once again thrilled the world by releasing the slimmer version of the Playstation 3 'PS3 slim' with a much more affordable price of $299, which was the same as the lunch price of ps2, But hey! We are entering the third year of the PS3, and you know what happens every third year of the playstation brand?, IT GOES MAINSTREAM! Just like the PS1 and the PS2, this is evident owing to the fact that the PS3 slim sold over 1.2 million consoles in its first three weeks. The ball has been turned around, The playstation network has really evolved, giving Live a tough time, Developers now like to make the PS3 the lead platform when making multiplatform games, The playstation brand has once again showed to the world, it is the leader in gaming, and the momentum is going to continue with the massive release of AAA games from Sony's 20 first party studios which is bigger than Nintendo and Microsoft first party studios combined.
Recently Kaz said the playstation 3 ONLY DOES EVERY THING, and where the playstation brand wins is best for the Industry.

Wait. What about the PSP? Huh?. . . . . . .  it's on a league of it's own competition and is no doubt one of the most powerful handheld gaming device.
