Hype is necessary for gaming. By hyping upcoming titles, publishers and developers get a lot of attention. Whether the game is hyped for being part of a long running series, graphics, gameplay modes, or another feature, gamers cling to every piece of information that gets released for the hyped title. Some titles live up to the hype and even surpass it, while others struggle to live up to the massive amounts of hype that accumulate over the development cycle. Just because a title is overhyped doesn’t mean it’s bad, either

5. Halo 3 (Xbox 360)

Every Halo released since the original Halo has received tons of hype. Whether it is from Microsoft, Bungie, or the media, Halo is always in the spotlight. Halo 3 was no different. For months before the official launch, Halo 3 was being talked about everywhere. It was the first Xbox 360 Halo game and the last installment of the Halo trilogy. With the game shrouded as Master Chief’s last epic battle, Halo 3 was going to be the best console FPS ever created.
Now, Halo 3 is a very well made game and a solid entry to the Halo franchise, but after the initial launch hype died down, gamers saw the game for what it was: a well made FPS. The single-player campaign was fun, but it was also far too short. With only a couple memorable levels in the game, the single-player campaign didn’t give you lifelong memories to hold on to like the original Halo did. The true redeeming factor of Halo 3 is the multiplayer. Still ranked in the top played Xbox Live games, Halo 3’s multiplayer is keeping the players coming back for more.

4. Haze (PS3)

Free Radical pledged loyalty to Sony at the start of the generation and wanted to provide the system with a FPS like no other. Unfortunately for Haze, the only experience it delivered was a disappointing one. Though visually the game was good, the gameplay was generic, bland, and boring. The concept of Nectar was intriguing, but the way the game utilized it was just abysmal. To give the game a little bit of a twist, the main character ends up fighting against his once former allies. Nothing about Haze came together well and it made the whole experience awkward. When the game finally launched after several delays, all the hype surrounding the game was virtually dead. Years of hype vanished nearly instantly.

3. Lair (PS3)

Factor 5 really wanted to go into the HD-era with a bang. Abandoning Nintendo and the Wii because of the lack of horsepower the system held, instead Factor 5 went to the PS3. Right away, Factor 5 showed off amazing graphics with Lair. Trailer after trailer was released and the graphics kept getting better. This was going to be the PS3 game to set the Xbox 360 and PS3 apart in terms of graphics. That didn’t happen, though. Lair was plagued with awful controls, confusing battles, and one of the worst final boss battles ever. Forcing players to use the motion controls of the PS3 Sixaxis controller, players didn’t have any option to use analog control. The motion controls were inaccurate and made the whole flying experience nauseating.

2. Grand Theft Auto IV (Xbox 360/PS3)

Grand Theft Auto IV is not a bad game in any means. Building upon the concepts of Grand Theft III- San Andreas, RockStar took the GTA series into the world of HD technology. Offering a bigger city, better graphics, and a deep story, GTA IV had everything going right for it. The biggest flaw of GTA IV came from the gameplay, though. The gameplay was just far too similar to the previous titles and the game style lost the magic feeling that made it so fun in the past. Cosmetically the game moved the series forward, but the storytelling and gameplay remained the same.

Killzone 2 was developed to be the ultimate PS3 FPS experience. Before even being formally revealed, Killzone 2 had a lot of hype surrounding it thanks to a trailer that featured breathtaking graphics. The development team had to prove to everyone that the PS3 was capable delivering those kinds of graphics. Well, the game was a beauty visually. Receiving numerous perfect scores in the media, Killzone 2 was looking pretty unstoppable.
Gameplay wise the game is fun, What Killzone 2 offered was a movie like experience. The action was intense. Thanks to the graphical presentation, Killzone was able to create an atmospheric world to wage war in, but the gun battles were slow and felt generic. The single-player campaign is worth playing, that’s for sure. The multiplayer, while fun at first but sometimes get boring, Honestly speaking, the game was worth the hype and lived up to the hype as it is easily one of the best FPS this generation.
