The Euromonitor International report has listed ten Nigerian cities as part of the cities to drive middle class growth in sub-Saharan Africa between 2015 and 2030. The report indicates that the ten cities will play major roles in middle class growth across the region. Kenya’s Kisumu, Mombasa and Nairobi, are projected to take the lead in household income growth in the sub-Sahara. However, due to low living standards, their income increase is expected to fall short of producing the kind of middle class growth seen across the leading cities in the region. Johannesburg, Pretoria, Abuja, and Lagos are all expected to outstrip Kenya’s top cities in middle income growth. According to the report, an additional 600,000 households in Abuja will join those already earning more than $10,000 with 2015 to 2030. See the cities listed below 1.) Aba 2.) Ibadan 3.) Maiduguri 4.) Ilorin 5.) Lagos 6.) Kaduna 7.) Abuja 8.) Kano 9.) Port Harcourt 10.)Benin http://www.givenbiznews.com.ng/list-of-nigerian-cities-that-would-lead-middle-class-growth-in-africa-before-2030/ |

In comparison to other parts of the world, the growth of the middle class in African societies is still been limited. However, some countries such as Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa and the so-called African Lion states have set the stage for a small but fast-growing middle class.... |

Much as Africa's growth is being celebrated around the world, it is important to note that poverty still loom over the continent. Access to quality education is still a reserve for the rich and upper-middle class. Health care services are still highly concentrated in metro and urban areas, while rural dwellers travel miles to access health facilities. It is becoming convincing that as Africa's economic captains continue to steer their ships towards full blown capitalism, the condition of the poorest-of-the-poor and the 'floating-middle class' have probably not improve much. This is because the burgeoning capitalist economy rarely see any need to invest in the poor. Rather, the poor are continuously being exploited for cheap labour for the production of capitalist goods that they (the poor) may never be able to afford. A case in point is the development going on in Abuja, Nigeria. The workers who toil day and night to build that city cannot afford to live in the city. They are relegated to live miles away in peri-urban settlements. Taxi drivers, factory workers and the likes may never be able to afford a living in Abuja metropolis, yet their sweat and toil keeps the city running. This is the irony of Africa's emerging economies; that the economies grow at single digits while poverty and the condition of poor continue to worsen. We experience economic growth accompanied by economic underdevelopment. Until there are deliberate policies for addressing the income disequilibria between the state-backed-super-rich and their stewards (the upper-middle class)on the one hand, and the floating-middle class and poorest of the poor on the other, Africa's fast growing economies my not necessarily translate into development... 1 Like |

Well, it is with optimism that I decided to respond to this post. It is also important to note that of all 'development', the human development is germane to all other development, In a society where people still burn people to death because of theft, In a society where we support embezzlement, just because the person in question is from our region In a society where youths advocate disunity and distance themselves from factors that will unite the country(making me wonder if the have any plans to lead this country someday) In a society where people prefer betting to real/hard work In a society where youths no longer read books(which is the backbone of every leader) but day in , day out are with there phones doing what will only make their brains dull... Forgive me, I just don't see the growth, expect we will mistake infrastructure for development...which has really been the bane of Africa politics-where our leaders will build roads and big industries and have no one to manage them, except expatriats... We need drastic change, attitudinal change...'change starts with me' 1 Like |
