Emeka Offor's Plan To Rehabilitate Daura Library: Charity Or Eye Service? by ANSOM: 3:00am On Sep 27, 2016
Just recently, news about plans by controversial businessman Sir Emeka Offor to rehabilitate a library in Daura made headlines on social media.

Excerpts of the story:

The Sir Emeka Offor Foundation is rehabilitating a library in Daura which is in a dilapidated state.

The Founder of Sir Emeka Offor Foundation and management of the Foundation did a facility tour of the library in Daura, Katsina state.

The library is in dearth of books and the facilities are generally dilapidated.

Sir Emeka Offor promised to help fix the library and ensure the supply of books and other facilities to it’.

Our View on this:

Sir Emeka Offor is the current Chairman of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company.

Since he assumed that office, a lot of controversies have been reported under his watch which includes (but not limited to) the detention and dehumanization of some members of the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, South-East Zone last year.

You can read about this particular incident here: http://dailypost.ng/2015/06/26/electricity-workers-threaten-industrial-action-over-detention-of-eedc-staff/

Apart from that, the current state of Electricity Distribution in the South East is deplorable.

It has also been reported that the staff under the payroll of his chain of businesses are owed salaries for many months.

Questions Arising:

Why should Sir Emeka Offor who should be saddled with the responsibility of reversing the rot in the Electricity Sector which bedevils the livelihood of individuals and businesses in the South East be more interested in rehabilitating a library in "far away Daura"?

We know some people who may be quick to come to his defence would say it is a gesture from his foundation but that is where another question arises...How many libraries has the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation rehabilitated in his hometown in Ekwusigo LGA or Anambra State as a whole?
Why should he "take the so-called tour" of the said library at a time when the President who hails from Daura is currently in power and not before now?

Which laudable Charity initiative has his foundation embarked on to improve the lives of the less-privileged in society if any? (We tried to check this on his foundation's website but found out the said website of the foundation was even offline)

If this show of unprecedented gesture of renovating and re-equipping a library which should have been a task for the Katsina State Min. of Education or relevant authorities representing Daura in the House of Assembly is being done based on the basis of Charity, we wish him (Sir Emeka Offor) well but also urge him to remember his people who need his "philanthropy" down here in the South-East because like they say, "Charity Begins At Home"

We only hope that this "gesture" is not being done in a bid to curry the favour of President Buhari to award him juicy contracts in the bid to salvage his sinking business empire which has gone bankrupt as was being speculated in various online media such as http://buzznigeria.com/businessman-emeka-offor-broke/

One does not leave his house which is on fire and chase rats!

Library in Daura? Really? cheesy cheesy cheesy

When news made rounds that this man is flat out broke ( caveat: billionaire broke is not impoverishment) , some folks almost convulsed in rage and misdirected angst.

Even if there isn't any library in the whole of Anambra /SE , he could have built one from scratch if he was really all about enriching minds....

Sir Emeka offor gifts of a library to the Daura people should be seen as the finest gesture ever for humanity. If they had been a good library in Daura prior to this time, may be we would have had an educated president.

I'm not a fan of Buhari but to be very honest, this gesture is fine.
Sir Emeka offor has done this in several places and doing it in Daura makes no special difference. Besides, Gitto construction Ltd built a cathedral in Otuoke.

There is no gainsaying the fact that Sir Emeka Offor is one of the most industrious and accomplished Nigerians of his generation. He has attracted and enjoyed God’s entrepreneurial and pecuniary blessings for over three decades. He has in turn consistently channeled those blessings toward the betterment of his fellow man (and woman and child) by remarkable acts of philanthropy.

His philanthropic works is not limited to one part of the country. He's a true Nigerian and is entitled to express to his love wherever and to whoever he wishes.

Daura that has since remained in the dark despite the President of the nation coming from that zone, it's no big deal if a Nigerian with a heart of GOLD decide to tumble that stance to help put up structures that will benefit the people.

The library will go a long way in developing the community and also attracts great personalities to the community. As far as am concerned, it's a commendable feat and one worth celebrating.

This is just to enlighten the writer of some of Sir Emeka Offor's contributions to his local community.

1. Sir Emeka Offor contributed over 50% to the building of Oraifite Civic Centre which stands as one of the best civic centres in the South-East of Nigeria.

2. Sir Emeka Offor has run a remarkable university scholarship scheme for over twenty years with the provision of a car and automatic employment for beneficiaries graduating with first-class degrees. Thousands of Nigerians have been proud beneficiaries of this scheme to date.

3. Sir Emeka Offor runs a widows’ cooperative society with over 3,000 members as of today. Under the auspices of this cooperative society, he sent a significant number of the widows to India for training on managing a cooperative society. They have subsequently been able to establish a microfinance bank and other thriving microenterprises.

3. Sir Emeka Offor built and fully equipped one of the best Anglican churches in the South East of Nigeria, located in Oraifite.

4. Sir Emeka Offor singlehandedly constructed a major community road (off Onitsha/Owerri road to Oraifite /Nnewi border). This project was executed by renowned civil engineering and contracting firm, MCC.

Sir Emeka Offor built Ekwusigo LGA Central Police Station.

Sir Emeka Offor provided a free water scheme for the four quarters of Oraifite (Unodu, Ezumeri, Irefi and Ifite).

Not forgetting that Governor Rochas built schools in some states in the north and no one made mention of eye service, a lot of Igbo businessmen are putting up structures in Kaduna, Kano and other Northern states and no one is crying foul

All of these publications, are they to ruin the goodwill of Sir Emeka Offor?

Only time will tell....

Let's be objective and let the man be, throwing stones into the market is a two way thing and pray it doesn't go the other way.

People have been philanthropic and his own gesture won't be an exception or we are yet to decipher who is behind this.. Let him be bold and confront Sir E

Why won't you guys stop this malicious act? Sir Emeka Offor through his foundation and companies has done wonderful projects in his native community, state and the nation at as whole. He as an individual contrubuted 50% to the construction of the Anglican cathedral in his town, through his foundation he has given $1million to the eradication of Oncocarsis (river blindness) in Nigeria, mind you this is 2nd highest to what Bill and Melinda Gate foundation gave on support to the same course. Sir Emaka Offor is a great man and should be accorded his respect

Sir Emeka Offor built Ekwusigo LGA Central Police Station .
 Sir Emeka Offor provided a free water scheme for the four quarters of Oraifite (Unodu, Ezumeri, Irefi and Ifite).
 Do we talk about the various skill acquisition programs undertaken by youths of Ekwusigo LGA under Sir Emeka Offor’s Youth Empowerment Scheme? Just last year, Sir Emeka Offor not only trained over one hundred youths in various skill acquisition programs but also empowered them financially to start their own businesses on completion of their training .

To answer your question, Sir Emeka Offor has no problem burying his father and how is a misplaced priorty if he wants to do this? Lemme educated you a bit on the wonder charity works this Engama called Sir Emeka Offor has done and still doing.

Apart from within his conglomerate, Sir Emeka has helped innumerable people secure jobs in Nigeria and abroad. The breadwinners of many families are gainfully employed today through the efforts of this great member of the Offor family.
Sir Emeka Offor’s star of charity shines far beyond his immediate community. Again, we wish to mention but a few of his national and international works of benevolence:
 Partnering with a U.S. based NGO, Sir Emeka Offor has through his eponymous Foundation donated books, reading materials and computers worth over $22 million to schools and communities in more than 18 countries in Africa including Nigeria.
 Sir Emeka Offor has established a glaucoma research centre at the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Mainz, Germany and in conjunction, established a Nigerian fellowship for cataract surgery and glaucoma management at the university.
 Sir Emeka Offor donated $2 million, which was matched with a grant of an additional $4 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to support the Global Polio Eradication Initiative launched by the Rotary International, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the U.S. Center for Disease Control.
 Sir Emeka Offor, through his Foundation, entered into a long-term agreement with The Carter Centre to eliminate river blindness (‘onchocerciasis’) in Nigeria. Pursuant thereto, Sir Emeka Offor provided a $10 million grant to the Carter Center, the largest grant ever received by the Center, to facilitate the Center’s efforts in eliminating river blindness in Nigeria.

Emeka Ofor may have something in mind for renovating a library in Daura, but then, you have to cut him some slacks. Emeka Ofor has always been in the news for his philanthropy in Education sector. He has, for the past 6 years, donated books worth more than 20 billions to schools in Anambra state. So even if his charity in Daura is eye service, we have to thank him for doing at all. How many has the so called good men in politics done freely?
