I still believe the only way to turn around our health care system is to force all our useless leaders to use only Nigerian hospitals for any diagnosis and treatments they require. But then, is that going to ever happen?
Re: We Perform Surgeries With Torch Lights - Doctors by OKEMKPI: 3:19pm On Oct 15, 2009
This is true, there was a case that happened where due to power outage, the tongue  of an IBO man was mistakenly interchanged with that of an American by the doctor during operation session -both were involved in a ghastly motor accident(the american was a tourist while the Iboman was  his escort)-the American  after the operation was speaking Ibo fluently-Nigeria doctors are too much kudos

If this happen for Onyibo land una go call am new invention,
Now our dear nation is technologically advancing into using a common touch light
for a successful surgery. We should be claping for them, more greeze to the government elbows.
Very soon we will graduate into using a candle light. Will that not be an outstandng perofrmance? How many countries in the world can have a successful surgery only with a candle light?
Re: We Perform Surgeries With Torch Lights - Doctors by faoogoke(m): 4:38pm On Oct 15, 2009
I don't believe this story a bit. How can it be that a surgeon will do surgery using touch light. With what did he use to power the electronics and accessories that are used in surgery. Or is surgery all about opening up the human body. Are there not supposed to be electronic equipments that will guide the process.
I maybe wrong but I guess this is craving for public sympathy. angry
Issues don't just affect doctors only, there are students and the generality of improvised Nigerians that are suffering.
This report has however taking it to far.
It can be compared to university lecturere laying claim that they lecture with candle light grin. And perhaps they do!

Why are you guys surprised dat doctors use torchlight for surgery. why don't you go to any of our mortuaries hospital and see if there is electricity right now. The situation is: no light, no fuel for generator, the generator no good and they never pay the generator mechanic for 3-previous repairs so he refuse to come for another servicing and above all, surgery must go on and of course our doctors knows dat u have no option than to perform your duty with or without light.

Our doctors are so good with human anatomy dat even when there is light and in the process of performing surgery the light goes off, they continue without light! if you doubt me, ask any of our medical doctors and they will confirm it.

Kratos007:

young man, you must either be a stark illiterate or a consumate ass. if you have nothing better to say about doctors in nigeria, i suggest you go chew on some gum or crawl back into whatever hole you came from. what light to be provided? by whom? do you know what it takes to become a doctor? do you have any idea of the stress involved, the intense reading, obscene hours of work and the killing schedules doctors have to keep? come to think of it, why dont you take a trip one night to a casualty room, an accident and emergency unit or a labour ward and see what medical doctors and nurses go through. do you know how difficult it is to break the news to a deceased patient's loved ones? it is an open secret that hospitals in nigeria are grossly underfunded and understaffed. nigerian doctors working in the country do so under the most abhorrent of conditions with inadequate financial rewards, so if they want to agitate for more pay, it is well within their right. do not come here and talk rubbish on matters you know little or nothing about boy, and yes, i AM a doctor.
And what pride has doctors?? if you are dissatisfied with your pay, quit medicine. I doubt if you are even a doctor, your foul language gave you up.

How disgraceful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It doesn't surprise me one bit, if Nigeria has stooped this low! God have mercy on the leaders of this Country!

Now, Consultants are performing surgeries with torch lights, how disgraceful! Also, I wonder the level of pain patients might be experiencing during these procedures. Again, as things are right now, who is sure if they have resources available to purchase appropriate Anaesthetic for these operations in Nigeria? If not, I am too sorry for the unfortunate patients who are being butchered in our hospitals right now, as a result of lack of resources. Shame, shame and shame!!

i really enjoy the doctor bashing but seriously these things happen, i did youth service in a village in 2001. we had to do c- sections sometimes with the headlights of the doctors car directed into the theatre.( remember i said a village). especially in emergency situations. the next town was like 4 hours away. anyway before i left the place we got a gen. undecided
Re: We Perform Surgeries With Torch Lights - Doctors by reindeer: 10:24pm On Oct 15, 2009
Believe you me people this is soo true!

Dont know the state now but as at the time i did my internship a few years ago, we had to finish up an appendectomy using rechargeable lanterns.
I had to unglove and hold the lamp for the surgeon, a senior registrar then.
Usually the gen was never left on overnight and fuel was rationed for each day, so you inform the 'power house' as part of routine pre op procedures, yet this day there had been too many emergency surgeries that by the time this hapless 21 year old guy came in around 2:30am, the gen went off just as we were tying our 'purse string' around the stump( sorry for me medical terms), we still had to finish the surgery anyway so out came the rechargeable lanterns courtesy of our nice theatre nurses.
Its pathetic really, and one of the most dangerous jobs you could do in nija then was to be a health worker, the hazards were just too many!
Anyways why are we shouting sef?regardless of what we say on nairaland, our president will still go out for treatment all the time and his political stooges will also travel to america to treat severe malaria and collect fat estacodes along, no be so?

Giant of Africa indeed! After 40 odd years of independence we still can't plot our way out of a paper bag. Absolutely disgraceful, the amazing thing is 'do our esteemed leaders even care at all?' And then we wonder why the rest of the world doesn't take us seriously.

Rebranding ko, rebranding ni!
