One thing that politicians are known for is the fact they have a lot to say; this goes beyond oratory because not many of them have that power. I am yet to see that Nigerian politician that can spark up the emotions that only people like Barack Obama can pull off. What they can do well is to tell what they will do without telling us how they intend to achieve it. I go build roads, I go build better hospitals, schools wey make sense, etc. I am not surprised because that is our level as a nation; we are yet to start talking about the big vision of technology, flying cars, and all that.

In this piece I will be bringing you what we consider as the 10 popular statements made by Nigerians in politics;

“My ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian”

The above statement was made by the immediate past President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan during a church service in commemoration of 2015 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in January 2015. This statement has earned him a place in Africa especially after he conceded defeat to the incumbent President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 general elections.

“I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody”

This is credited to President Muhammadu Buhari which he made on May 29, 2015 during his first inaugural speech as President. This went a long way to underline issues like him being independent minded, his anti-corruption fight, godfatherism or any form of intimidation from external forces while still underlying his commitment to serve all Nigeria. Sai Baba chants increased wella after this.

“Ojukwu is a great man, he died but his manhood lives on”

This is one of those statements credited to our ever funny former First Lady of Nigeria, Patience Jonathan who over the span of her husband’s tenure always dropped gbagauns (grammatical blunders). She said this in the wake of activities organized to honour Dim Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu, former Head of State of the defunct Republic of Biafra at his passage. Of course Nigerians had a good laugh as a way of not showing their disappointment at the First Lady’s remarks.

“Mr Orubebe, you are a former Minister of the Federal Republic .You are a statesman in your own right. You should be careful about what you say or what allegations or accusations you make. Certainly you should be careful about your public conduct.”

This statement came out as an advice but turned out to be rundown of a former minister of the Niger Delta, Mr. Orubebe by the former INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega. This he said during the announcement of the results of the Presidential election where the former minister created a scene by protesting the results that were showing that the All Progressives Congress was leading the People’s Democratic Party. Jega fall Orubebe hand with style.

“Stealing is not corruption”

This came out really bad especially coming from a President; Goodluck Jonathan during a media chat. The question was posed to him due to the allegations that gross corruption was being perpetuated in his government and that was one of his defenses for that allegation.

“Those who make peaceful change impossible will make violent change inevitable.”

The above statement was made by former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar but he is not the original person that ever made this statement, so you can say he borrowed it to address an issue. This was during the National Stakeholders meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party where he challenged the eligibility of Goodluck Jonathan to contest the election under the PDP due to their zoning arrangemen. The statement was later made reference to after the election when violence erupted in various parts of Northern Nigeria.

“This ASUU strike is a miasma of a deprecable apothesis of an hemorrhaging plutocracy, cascadinly oozing into a maladorous excresence of mobocracy. With all tarmangant ossifying proclivities of a kakistocracy, our knowledgia centura is enveloped in a paraphlegic crinkum crankum. Therefore, ASUU, cest in dejavu, dejavu peret ologomabia.”

I am sorry if you don’t understand what you read above but it is credited to the great Igodomingodo, Hon. Partick Obahiagbon, a former House of Representative member and Chief of Staff to Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole. He is popular for his bogus grammar that he uses to address national issues at the confusion of his listeners. The above was said in the event of ASUU strike and one wonders how he wants the students involved to even know whether he was speaking for them or against them.

“There is God oo…”

This statement caused a lot of stir and not surprisingly because it came from our hilarious former First Lady of Nigeria, Patience Jonathan where she was lamenting about the abducted Chibok girls and how the Borno State government was handling it. Even though she was being emotional, Nigerians saw it as an embarrassment to the office of the First Lady.

“If what happened in 2011 (alleged rigging) should again happen in 2015, by the grace of God, the dog and the baboon would all be soaked in blood.”

This is another statement that is credited to President Buhari while he was addressing his supporters of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change on May 12, 2012. Though he has never been indicted for sponsoring violence at any time, statements like this gained him enemies who regarded him as an Islamic fanatic.

“I have never collected bribe in my life”

Rotimi Amaechi is one man that has weathered so many storms in the political arena but in fact one fight he has lost is that with Governor Nyesom Wike in the gubernatorial elections of Rivers State which the All Progressives Congress lost. Governor Wike was pressing charges of his corruption and he came out to say that.

I think we shouldn't mk to much out of plagiarism tho. Sometimes it may be oversight. We should rather concentrate on what trend of thought the speaker has faith in. I am certain that Buhari's following line of i belong to everybody is a lie to himself.
