Is Sport Betting and Co. destroying us or saving us ?
By Khaleefah The Blogger.

The revenue generated from sport betting and co. is estimated to be N1billion a day, and I wonder if sport betting is really something that saves us or destroy our conscience, youths and the image of our country.

Truly, I wont say sport betting has given our country a bad image because it is not only legalized in Nigeria but in other countries in Africa and Europe. Even in other parts of Europe, sport betting is not that popular like casino.

Casino and the other poker games generate more than $1million a day in other parts of Europe and America especially. But here in Nigeria, I wonder if it has destroyed our image, conscience and youths in the sense that our youths both the able-bodied, graduates, undergraduates, school cert holders, secondary schoolers and other out-of-school youths see sport betting as a means of livelihood.

You should just take a stroll down to the betting shop within your vicinity, and you will see our youths wasting or staking their hard-earned money on either Soccer Betting, Virtual Dog Betting, Virtual Sport Betting and other live betting options.

The Argument: Destroying Us.
Sport betting is destroying us in Africa most especially in Nigeria. My friend escaped with our hard-earned money that we were given after cleaning our neighbour’s car early in the morning just to go stake it on Virtual Soccer Betting popularly known as ‘Baby Okwu’, he came back home looking like a madman that just regained his senses.

Not only his my friend affected by this syndrome, other youths too follow this trend of going to sport betting shops to spend their money, their parents money or errands money just to double or triple their stakes which at the end of the day is unsuccessful.

Sport Betting has given jobless youths reasons to cheat just to have a penny to stake on their favourite team. Some go as far as stealing, lying and exploiting other dangerous means to get money just to stake on their favourite dog.

Sport betting, if banned will enlighten the jobless youths and those able-bodied that ‘saving is the key to the future’, all this money spent on sport betting would have been saved and be useful for them in the future.

Sport betting has created a unhygienic trend in the sense that most sport betting shops, outlets don’t have a specific closing time and the stakers have seen this as an opportunity to stay from 8am – 12pm the next day without bathing or brushing their teeth or even giving them the opportunity to look clean.

Sport betting has corrupted our teenagers under the age of 18, even the regular ‘ Under 18 are not allowed here’ is just there as a fancy frame or poster as sport betting agents don’t even see it as a right to send the underages back home but instead they allow this underages to engage in sport betting activities including the popular ‘Aja nsare’ and ‘Baby Okwu’.

The Argument: Saving us.
Sport betting has improved the labour market in the sense that it has created jobs for the jobless youths, our job-seeking brothers and sisters, it has made them sport betting agents, their gain is the commission they receive at the end of every month.

Sport betting has reduced the rate of criminal activities, our youths are now seen in various sport betting outlets trying out their luck, they all wanna be the next ‘Ciroma Adekunle’ that won N10million in this same sport betting.

With as little as N150, most Nigerians believe their luck can change for the better if they play their games right, which is true. With just N150 you can win the large sum of N40million which alone serves as a great morale to them.

After stating the necessary, I hope you now know whether sport betting is saving us or destroying us.
