No sense in banning rice Importation when Nigeria can't produce rice that will feed 5 states.
Nigeria can produce rice to feed the whole of Africa. Nigeria is like a housewife that knows how to... but doesn't want to cook.... has all the resources to prepare food for the family... but prefers to eat out. ... even though she can barely afford to.Should the restaurants double the price for food.... she would have only one option... to produce her own.Rice need to be heavily taxed or banned .... then we would see how much rice we can produce.

No there are not same thing. The ban of generators is on the smaller ones for ecological reasons. It will be foolishness to totally ban generators when we don't have reliable power and can't fix that in short term. But food, we must produce what we eat. That doesn't require a long term as compared to power.
It is in this case that i will expect to hear that ' it is not rocket science'
ok ,please kindly tell us what government policies are on ground to boost the local production of rice .

I hope this is true because everything that is ban in this country still find their way in through land borders the only difference is that the so called duty goes into the pocket of custom officers. There a community in Badagry where customs and smugglers do big transactions between midnight and 4am for all kinds of goods. Even early in the morning we all see vehicles with badly adjusted suspension to accommodate frozen foods and other goods moving God help us.

We think that Nigerian made goods are fake, I think is a time we all start encouraging Nigerian made goods, China has no Natural resources but has the best human resources than any country. China was once like Nigeria, but they stopped the importation of any kind of goods for few years until they started encouraging the home made goods, Today China exports their home made goods to all countries , making them one of the richest country in the world. Lets emulate from them. Is just a matter of time Nigeria will be great again.

Thank you ,this is where I support and also disagree with u. Let me tell you something,if you privatise the land borders ,you will be amazed at the drastic drop in corrupt practises there but the notion those custom ppl have is that it is Nigeria money so lets chop . I am not saying they should privatise but govt can do it to the extent that every single shipment or goods through the border will be accounted for .we are in the 21st century and all these things isn't rocket science as all these politicians are making it look.but the point is the political will to do it. There is nothing impossible . Now look at the combined revenue from the seaport and land borders from rice and imagine how much money government will make.
You should know that even 'elementary science' is 'rocket science' in Nigeria. Seems the authorities are following the easy way out for now which is to close land borders (which are more tricky) and allow only through the sea borders which are easier to monitor.

This is what I am saying ,we can do the same simultaneously, which will be to tax heavily now to raise income for government and to put a specific time frame for complete ban and within that period put in place a robust local production of rice plus a system to check its massive importation into the country

Dont see any difference here because stopping the importation of rice is suppose to encourage the local production of rice yet the price of locallly produced good stuffs are still very expensive like rice , garri and so on .
A smart person will see it as a business/investment opportunity.this is Economics na. Wen resources r scarce, price goes up! All U see is problem n U complain.

There have been various interventions from the days of Obj. Gej did same for which we applauded him and Adesina. But you know why the policies failed? Rice was still freely imported and cheaply too.
The present government is not redesigning the wheels, its only building on what previous governments have done. Encouraginf farmers through FADAMA projects, proving subsidies and farm inputs and above all guaranteeing a market for he eventual produce. Investors including our own Atiku have established rice mulls in anticipation of massive harvest. This I Believe is thee way to go.

So if the local ones are not enough to feed your people, while not allow the foreign ones in phases 75%, 50%, 25% and 0% over a period of two years. There is a payback time. 2019 is at the corner. These people you are starving will not return you to suffer them again. A word is enough for the wise

I am sorry to say that this government is very illiterate.

we say we have no dollar.

These rice the Nigerian govt is allowing to spoil was bought with dollars by Nigerians.

APC just keeps punishing Nigerians.

A cup of rice is N100 while beans is N80...
if those rice comes in, we will pay in dollar (the little dollar dah we dont evn av much of) cos business done between two or more nations is measured with approved international currencies like dollar, pounds, etc. when phone importers wanna import fones, they also take frm d dollar cbn save to import d fones. Wen you send ur children 2 sch in foreign country u take outta d dollars. The only way dollar enters in2 our country is if we sell out, and we get paid in dollar by the country we sell to. The only common commodities we sell out dat brings in dollar is crude oil, natural gas n few others. We need to increase the number of things we produce n sell out so dat d dollar comin in can increase.

That's it, just look at how many jobs Mills like that will create with such huge amount? But greedy and quick money is playing fast one there too while our so called importers like those Lebanese and Indians with the collaborations of corrupt government agencies make it possible for them to do. And most of the rice they bring in are fake, expired rice that has been in the ban for 10s of years .just look even at many chocolate too. No single or standard chocolate factories in South West or Nigeria as a whole while they bring junks for us and even come here to repackage it in their house.
I was with a Lebanese client 3 years ago in Apapa, I know he does some dirty importation like bringing nearly expired chocolates from abroad and supply shops like shoprite and goodies and so on. I even heard he repackage some expired goods that even come through boarders .
Imagine this guy was threatening a nafdac official with hire assassin because the guy seized his goods? I was hearing his conversation on phone and I was boiling in my mind. No agency can stop him as he claimed because he is very wealthy and influence.
The country needs to stop many of these to improve our local production and empower our youths, no matter how. China did not become an industrial hub in one day or by relying on foreign goods that can be produced locally.

He big pass saraki and the rest wey them don come for? If they want to get him they would he wont do nothing..

If you know how annoyed i am by just readin what you wrote up there. In these people's country you cant try sh.it there. They treat black like animals and dont have regards for us. In our own country they are doing the same thing to us..

you don't ban food items outrightly like that without having a substitute in place to fill the gap. People are dying of hunger in Nigeria or is it until u see dead bodies on the streets that u will realize what we are talking about? This government appears clueless about the way forward that is just the basic fact and everyone is complaining about that, lets not sugarcoat the bitter truth.
there is no outright ban on rice importation. people are still importing rice through the sea ports. the ban is only on land boarders.

I am sorry to say this, but that rice should stay were it is, it's about time we learn to grow our own food.

Haba, our population is over 180 million but we still import rice from Thai & India, am sorry if this will affect the business of flat heads, but we must be self sufficient in dis country

Chaiiiii. My brother we have the land to do so. What is lacking is the strong will power from the government.

An average Nigerian Farmer cultivates less than 30 bags of rice from one hectare of land due to the use of crude implements. If such farmers can have access to farm implement like rice transplanting machine, tractors, harvesters, rice cutters, etc we will go places.

A hectare of land shouldn't produce anything less than 50 bags of rice with the use of better technology.

Our government is dump together with anyone that supports rice importation.

Who told you we can't even produce stone free rice? We already have stone free rice locally produced in the market.

We can do more with an enabling environment.

You want the government to open borders for things that can be produced locally, but still complain of unemployment right? Continue...

Trust me bro, the problem is that no body want to go to farm again. Everyone want to be bankers or work in slumberger or Mobil ( even agricultural engineering and agric related graduates). And many states have rendered their youths to begger, just like ekiti.
No thanks to the government that can't declare state of emergency on agricultural research and products via mechanized farming. We seriously need mecahnized farming this country. I wonder why federal government can't partner with LG over federation to invest in specialised agricultural products that can grow well in each LG to boost crop production. Similar thing was done during ibb regime through ,was it MAMSER or DIFRII programs (dunno exact name).
The news is good if we know how to make use of it.

bros you know you are very capable, you can always help us do some farming naaah!!

Abi are you still trapped in #TheOtherRoom

That's just a 0.001% fraction of the leakages we have in Nigeria, imagine $3 billion dollar worth of rice stocked in Benin alone, just between 2 years of Buharri administration. Nigerians should just be greatful to God to have a lenient Buharri has her President cos if I were the President, by now a bag of rice will be gold. If I were the President to have inherited an indebted and bankrupt nation like Nigeria, a bag of rice will be #1.5million Naira, such that if your Bill Gate in Nigeria, you will know you don't need to go the University to get a degree before you start rice farming. Its either you farm rice to eat rice or you dream of eating jollof rice in heaven. Nigerians are one of the worst crooked and tortoise brained people in the world.

In addition; If I were the Nigerian President I will ban 96% of imported commodity into the country. A bag of Garri will be # 800,000 naira, a bag of beans will be #2 million Naira, a com will go for #200 million naira and the list will go on. blv me, it will be a 2nd hell for Nigerians until every body begins to treat the sand alone as gold. Go to Dubai, Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabic and see how at a disadvantage and unfriendly Nature has treated them with drought, a poor and demeaning soil preference. Naija brainless; addicted and following twitter, facebook, watsapp, BBM and all the white man inventions like Colombian crack cocaine without asking questions. When I say the Nigerian GDP is worth $22 trillion dollars, people think that I have read too much history of Illuminati history, John D Rockefeller and Amreich Rothschild $600 trillion dollar worth of dynasty and empire. What is left of Nigerian lazy youths now is nothing but chaft and animal dung behind the pretence of certificate, meal tickets and empty University degrees. continue in ineptitude and let's see how far you can all go. keep on blaming your President and politicians. pls continue!
