Bayelsa State is one of the least populated States in the federation with 8 local government areas. It was created by the Late Sani Abacha's regime in 1996. Bayelsa has a population of approximately 1.8million with a workforce far less than a million. But worthy to mention, is the endowment of this state. Bayelsa is an oil-rich state with a monthly allocation of not less than 4billion naira from the federation account every month. The federal allocation to the state on September place the state as the third highest earner behind Akwa Ibom and Rivers. With an allocation of 7.6billion monthly, the state still owe civil servants salary arears of 5 to 10 months. One may be tempted to ask: Is the state civil service still overblotted despite the series of verifications? Are there capital projects embarked upon by the state government to the extent that money had been exhausted? Are previous administrations in the state owning so much that the money has to be used on debt servicing? A lot of questions beg for answer. Thus, I want to be clarified by those who know the politics of this thiny but richly endowed state better than I do. Where is the money going?
