The Igbos have to join the Yorubas in celebrating Moremi Ajesoro, the same way Germany joins Britain, France, The United States and Russia to commemorate World Wars 1 and 2, when those countries defeated Germany. History must be used to unite rather than divide. That is what the Western powers know, and that is what we in Nigeria should begin to practice.

The Ooni of the great Yoruba Kingdom of Ife has unveiled plans to really honour Moremi Ajasoro, the remarkable Yoruba and Igbo Queen of Ife. A beauty reagent is being inaugurated and a statue erected in her honour. Ooni Ogunwusi is no doubt an enlightened monarch for looking to history to insightfuly build up his people’s economy through promotion of cultural tourism.

Moremi saved the Yorubas from the Igbo after the Igbo had been dislodged from Ife due to the arrival of Oduduwa The Great.According to History Of The Igbo World by Prince Charles Offokaja ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K4AIUO8) , in the 12th century AD, after the aboriginal Igbo of were disloged from Ife, they started seriuous guerilla warefare to retake Ife from the Yoruba conquerors.

The Igbo were succeeding due to their clever tactics of using raffia cotumes that made them seem extremely fearsome to the Yoruba who thought they were spirits. Moremi successfully wormed her way into the heart of Obatala Oreluere, the King of the Igbo aborigins and leader of the resistance.Obatala Oreluere’s other Igbo royal titles included Oba Igbo, Obi Osere Igbo, etc., etc.

Moremi undoutedly a paragon of beauty, strategically allowed herself to be captured by the Igbo forces, and then the Igbo King Oreluere saw her and married her. From Moremi’s strategic point as queen of the Igbo aborigins of Ife, she was able to discover the battle secret of the Igbo warriors, that they were not spirits but rather, they wore hideous masks made from raffia palm fronds that made them look like spirits ( Igbo sense tactics at play – Igbo people and palm tree no be today).

The intelligent Moremi also discovered that these raffia palms burnt easily when set on fire.Having discovered the secret of the Igbo warriors, Moremi escaped and went back to her first husband, the Yoruba nobleman, and he welcomed her fully back into his household. Moremi then revealed the secret of the Igbo warriors to their Yoruba brothers. The next time the Igbo warriors attacked, the Yoruba warriors set fire to their higly combustible raffia costumes, winning an easy victory.

It is just like the way the US Army easily defeated the British Army during the American War of Independence due to the impressive but higly visible red uniforms of the British Army that made them stand out in the terrain, rather than blend in. As a result of the ingenuity of Moremi, the Igbos lost Ife permanently, and the Yorubas still rule and occupy it to this day. Moremi had proven that what a man can do a woman can do better.

So, why are Igbo people saying they will be comemorating Queen Moremi? first off, because the moment she said ‘I do’ to Oba Igbo Oreluere, she became Igbo by marriage. So, whether we like it or not, she is one of us also, and the Yorubas are our in-laws by dint of that.Secondly, Moremi is a super character that continues to charm both the Igbos and Yorubas. Also, she teaches us valuable lessons on how a man should restrain himself with discipline.

So, we will remember her.According to  http://moremi.oauife.edu.ng/history.php Moremi Ajasoro, Princess of the Yoruba, was a figure of high significance in the history of the Yoruba peoples. She was a member-by-marriage of the royal family of Emperor Oduduwa, the progenitor of the Yoruba people. She was the wife of King Oranmiyan of Ife (and later Oyo).

A woman of tremendous beauty and a faithful and zealous supporter of her husband and the Kingdom of Ile Ife. Moremi Ajasoro, Princess of the Yoruba, was a figure of high significance in the history of the Yoruba peoples. At this time there were neighboring tribes called Igbo, who were regularly and successfully raiding the people at and around Ile Ife. enslaved by these people, and because of this they were generally regarded with disdain by the Yoruba city-states.

Moremi was a very brave and beautiful woman who, in order to deal with the problem facing her people, offered anything she had to give in sacrifice to the Spirit of the river Esimirin so that she could discover the strength of her nation’s enemies.Moremi decided upon a strategy. She went to the nearby river Esinmirin, and vowed to deity that she would make the greatest sacrifice possible if they allowed her to discover the strength of her nation’s enemies. She then went to a place that was raided frequently, and when the raiders did come she allowed herself to be captured. Being very beautiful she was taken as booty to the Igbo King.

She was very confident and skillful, and soon won the trust and affection of the King and people in Igbo land. She became familiar with their customs and tactics of warfare. She found that the Igbo, in preparation for battle, would cover themselves from head to toe with Ekan grass and bamboo fibers. She realized that if someone could pass amongst the Igbo warriors with a torch that they could be defeated.Feeling that she had adequate knowledge, she escaped, to the great surprise of her Igbo captors.

She returned to her first husband, King Oramiyan of Ife (and later Oyo), who immediately had her re-instated as his Princess Consort. Knowing the warfare secrets of the Igbo, the people of Ife were forever freed from the terrors of these previously invincible warriors.

When you say Ugbo, are you talking about Ugbo in Ondo State, or Onitsha Ugbo (Orisha Ugbo), Ugbokko Araba, or Ugbodu all in the Anioma part of Delta State? Lol. Because neither the Igbodefender.com article nor the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, website article mentioned Ugbo.

learning igbo history from yoruba history or hebrew history will only make you look insane. 'Igbo' is the Oyo/standard yoruba dialectical variation, just like Ife is really 'Ufe', it is Ugbo of Ondo state not SE nigerian Igbos

many of these people will swear they are doing good for their ethnicities by clinging to other people but its just an insult to me, telling the world that we dont have our own history. At least this case it's yoruba-Igbo
it gets worse when an igbo person will be reading Bible to learn Igbo history and start saying nonsense about Igbos originating from Israel

There is no tribe known as Igbo. Ibo is the correct tribal identifier. However, after studying history of Nigeria and the roots of indigenous people and Ibo could not be traced to any significant greatness in the region, Chinua Achebe, a man respected amongst his people for his penmanship updated Ibo to Igbo and led a rewrite and revision to attach Ibo to Igbo and thus to Ife and its history. He did not appear to know about the existence of Ugbo people in Ondo State.

His revision had for a time being gained ground and spread due to initial under-estimation and dismissal by Yoruba historians as inconsequential account. This is similar to the attempted revision by last Oba of Bini, claiming Bini was not an offshoot of Yoruba dynasty.

Soon Yoruba historians, and in particular Ugbo priests and their King laid out in detail and chronology order, citing their culture, shrines, deities, belief systems, worship, customs, songs, dance, and many other customs of their land are mirrored in Ife, and challenging Achebe to, not only refute them with facts but also, give chronological footprint of Ibo or Igbo in Ile Ife.

The outcome was that another rewrite displaced the previous in which Ile Ife dissapeared from Achebe's claims of ownership. Unfortunately for him, the term Igbo had caught on in a wild spread and gained acceptance by Ibo people and so it remained till today. The word Biafra is another steal from the people of oil coast who were the original Biafrans. They did not fight back and so Ibos succeeded in taking ownership and claiming Biafra.

There were two literary frauds in Ibo history known for stealing ideas and cultural roots that belonged elsewhere in a much respected civilization and converting it into a Ibo story and history to gain similarity respect and cognition. They failed in some they succeeded in some. Achebe is known for historical rewrites, Acholonu is known for art theft.

The frauds:
1 - Chinua Achebe
2 - Catherine Acholonu

First of all it is insulting for you to claim that there is no tribe known as Igbo, as you claimed in the quote reproduced below. It amounts to nothing more than a clever arguement that ignores several indisputable facts.

Achebe and Acholonu are World Class intellectual giants. Describing them as frauds is sacrilege.

Just because they promoted truths that one doesn't agree with doesn't mean one should call them disrespectful names.

Good question, Sir. Take the then Igbo Kings of Ife, the Obatala for instance. One of their titles was Obi Osere Igbo. Now, let us analyse the title Obi Osere Igbo. The Obi part of the title is undeniably an Igbo royal title, as in Obi of Onitsha, Obi of Otolo, Nnewi, etc., etc., etc.

The Osere part of the title has a deep priestly significance in Igbo Land. For example, in the Igbo kingdom of Ogwuta in Imo State, their priests have inherited the title Osere. In Ogwuta, the Osere is the Chief Priest of the Owu Institution. (Does the word Owu ring a bell?. Don't say no o.)

Okay, let's continue with our analysis of the Oba Igbo's title, Obi Osere Igbo.

The last part of the title Igbo is self explanatory. If one should translate that Obatala title from Igbo to English, it would simply mean Priest King of the Igbo. Mind you, ancient Igbo Kings like the King of Nri, where the aboriginal Igbo of Ife originated according to History of the Igbo World by Prince Charles Offokaja were and are priest kings.

Even Catherine Acholonu, whom you despise, told us of a trip she took to Cuba, where she saw a statue of Obatala built by Afro Descendants (probably from Ife) in which the following phrase was inscribed Obatala, King of the Igbo Nation. This phrase is so insightful that I will repeat it, Obatala, King of the Igbo Nation. These and other facts are documented in the book, History of the Igbo World, which you can purchase at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K4AIUO8 at a very affordable price. In fact, if you had read the book, you wouldn't have asked me such an easy question. Oga, bring difficult questions na.
